Have you ever wondered why there are "unwritten rules" in the game of baseball? In this video, we'll discuss how they work and why they exist in the first place.
If I'm playing competitive, paid baseball, I'm going to compete and try to score runs. Therefore, if a bunt is how I get on base, I'm going to bunt. Standing in the box and just allowing a pitcher to get me out even when their team is leaving an opportunity wide open isn't just stupid, it's anathema to the competition of sports. Conversely, if I'm a pitcher, I want to earn my no-no. I want to get everyone out, not have them roll over and die because it would help me out.

The Yankees in 1943 did not leave the field like that because of "the unwritten rules" they did it because we were at the height of WWII. Every guy on the field knew dozen guys from their hometowns who were overseas or in the ground and they also knew a score of better players who were in uniform at the time. In 1943;the Yankee Clipper himself was in the service. Those Yankees were a shadow of the real Yankees, bthe world series really want that important at the time and they all had the humility to know it. Historical context can be helpful if you are a sports writer.

My take on unwritten rules (in any sport, not just baseball): if violations are important, the governing body for that sport will (and should) make it a written rule. Otherwise, let it be. We see this all the time; someone comes up with a trick play and they get away with it… once. Then the league changes the rules so it’s now a penalty. I’d honestly be surprised if there wasn’t a sport in which this has happened. Certainly in the NFL, but motorsports as well. Maybe golf? Has anyone seen a trick play in golf?⛳️

Unwritten rules in every game are stupid. Guys get excited and they flip their bats. Don't like it, beat them. Win the game. Win the series. Win the World Series. Don't hit them at the next at bat or something stupid. We just saw someone cross-check a guy in the head after an empty netter in the NHL. The biggest issue with every "unwritten rule" in baseball is that EVERY one of them benefits the pitchers. Don't break up a no hitter with a bunt, don't swing for fences with a big lead, don't walk on the pitchers mound, don't flip the bat after a home run. Even the examples in this video favor the pitchers and defense. That's why, for me, I'm not a big fan of MLB unwritten rules.

Yeah, it largely depends on the situation, really. If you're up 7 runs in the top of the last inning with no outs and the bottom of the other team's lineup is coming up, I'd still avoid stealing, but that's about the only situation. Particularly if there's a double play set up. Runner on first or runners on first and second with 0 or 1 out? Move the runners to avoid the possibility of a double play. Other than that, though, I'd probably tell anyone I was coaching _NOT_ to steal.

Most unwritten rules in baseball are bullshit times ten. Not celebrating? Wow, great. In every sport you celebrate your accomplishments. But if you do in baseball you're disrespectful? That's utterly nonsensical. If you're not allowed to celebrate an achievement you don't need to play the game in the first place. This rule is bullshit. Everyone complaining about baseballers celebrating is stupid. And not breaking a no-hitter with a bunt, or not hitting a home run on a specific count when leading or trailing a specific margin? For fuck's sake, it's sports. You try your best, no matter the result. Get over it. People who consider those actual unwritten rules literally want players TO PLAY BAD just to not offend their opponents. If a bunt is the best solution in a given situation for you and your team, then do it. It is not your responsibility to allow a no-hitter for an opponent. It is your responsibility to do everything possible to break it and to get on base. That's what you play for after all. A no-hitter is nothing special if the opponent doesn't try to break it. If I was a professional baseball player I would NEVER apologize after such an incident, never. Even if I was a rookie and the one complaining a future Hall of Famer. I would never apologize, becaause those rules are the stupidest unwritten rules in sports.

A bunt ruining a no hitter? Poor baby! First, it's bad enough to lose a game, but to not even get a single hit during that game, is just rubbing salt in the wound. Then to demand that this team just lie down like a dog and accept this humiliating defeat, is the wrong answer. A no hitter is a great accomplishment, and if a pitcher gets one, it is well deserved. But to demand that the other team just give up, is a total no-go! If the pitcher isn't good enough to get a no hitter, then they don't get one. Simple as that.

As a lifelong baseball player and fan in my mid 40s, I have a lot of mixed feelings on the unwritten rules. I think a lot of players, particularly pitchers, take them too far. There's nothing wrong with showing some excitement after hitting a homerun or driving in / scoring the go ahead run. The problem is when you're doing it to humiliate or show up the other team, particularly the pitcher. A little bat flip, some hopping or jumping down to first, waving your arms in the air a bit, a few arm pumps, etc, all acceptable. Staring down the pitcher as you flip your bat and bop your way around the bases? That's a plunking. But pitchers are supposed to follow the unwritten rules for plugging a guy, too. You get one shot during the hitter's next at bat, and you hit him in the leg or the lower back. You don't throw anywhere above the bottom of his rib cage. If you miss, you're done. And if the hitter was actually showing up the pitcher and throwing at him was "justified," the hitter's team doesn't retaliate, regardless of whether or not the beaning was successful. Not bunting during a no hitter has always been stupid in competitive baseball. If the defense is playing in the proper positions, getting on base with a bunt at the MLB level is incredibly difficult. So, if you bunt because the defense has put themselves out of position, and you're able to reach base, that's the defense's fault. No hitters are _earned,_ not awarded. That being said, if it's the bottom of the 9th in a 4 run game with one out and no one on, bunting is a dick move. It's not worthy of retaliation, though. I argued with a lot of people when the Tatis Jr. thing happened. It's arguably a bigger dick move to draw a walk in that situation than it is to hit the ball. The bases are loaded and your team is up big. If you draw a walk, it scores another run and does nothing to move the game closer to ending. If you swing, though, you have a much better chance of getting an out. Hit a pop up into the outfield for an easy out, and no coach is going to have the runners on second and third tag up to score. Put the ball on the ground in the infield and you'll likely hit into a double play. Draw the walk and the pitcher will have to go through another full at bat while clearly struggling with control, which could lead to several more runs walked in. He had no reason to apologize.

@@dandiehm8414 Drawing a walk that scores a run in a game you're winning by a mile is arguably worse than swinging at that pitch. At least if the batter is swinging, he's giving the defense a chance to get an out. It just so happened that Tatis hit a homerun. Drawing a walk that scores a run leaves the defense in the same situation they were just in, having made no progress towards getting out of the inning (or game) with a pitcher on the mound who is clearly struggling to generate outs. Competitively, the right move in that situation is to draw the walk. Baseball by far has the dumbest unwritten rules and the most fragile egos of any pro sports athletes lol

Correct. I could've mentioned some more of his unwritten rule blunders since he had so many😂

Why isn’t this an “unwritten rule?”Here’s the setup: Perfect game on the line. Ninth inning, two outs, 3-2 count. Is the batter expected to swing at ball four? No? Why not? He’s expected to not bunt in a no hitter in the eighth inning to not break up the no-no. (Hint: a bunt is not a cheap hit unless the team in the field are already reading tomorrow’s headlines. You have to earn all 27 outs.)

What has distinguished baseball is some level of grace and non juvenile “look at me” behavior. Basketball and football have been ruined by incessant teen age antics. The unwritten codes instilled a sense of team and sport cohesion; a certain ‘elegance.’ Now it’s look at me, grab my crotch, make fun of the other player etc etc. Baseball had tradition. Now it’s graceless.

Bat flipping and these stupid, childish celebrations need to stop. I quit watching clown ball a few years ago. It was getting ridiculous.

I’d say a bunt in a no hitter is pretty shady after the 7th inning. Before that, it’s just another at bat in a game. If you pump a home run and show up a pitcher, be prepared to take a dose next time up. At least you get another free base 😂

If it was an actual rule, it would be written down. Class dismissed.

I would like to mention that these unwritten rules did exist for a reason. It was the mutual protection of the opponents career. Back then, there was no free agency, no multiyear deals, players paid with peanuts compared to today.

lol i love how baseball fans act like getting hit with a fastball is going to kill you even though.. it's only happened once - and it was a total freak accident in an era before helmets. Also, hitting a major league fast ball is not the hardest thing to do in sports, not even a little bit. Baseball fans need to stop exaggerating so much, it's cringe.

What is the hardest common thing to do in sports according to you? I'm honestly curious.

Hardest COMMON thing? First time I've heard that. I guarantee you it would take longer for the average person to do a kickflip on a skateboard than it would for them to hit a fastball. Let alone any of the more technical and complicated tricks you can do in skateboarding. @@techiemikey

The reason unwritten rules are falling by the wayside is due so many adults today who haven't actually "grown up". Too much childish or juvenile behavior is celebrated by generations refusing to control themselves with dignity and consideration. Just do it if it feels good is the new unwritten rule of the day, and is why I don't care to pay attention anymore. Nice work!

You guys notice how every “unwritten” rule is about being respectful? So there’s your point, just don’t be an ahole and you have nothing to worry about.. like arod, he ain’t gonna convince me he didn’t know that would upset the pitcher, I’ve never once seen a player actually do that. Then he says, let’s not extend his 15 mins of fame”?!? Haha dude is so self centered it’s not even funny. To be honest I really think he is one of the most hated people in baseball today. Right behind Jose canseco

Professional team sports, all of them, have but one foundational purpose: Be good role models for our youth. That includes exclusively good sportsmanship, no PED's, no fights, no effectively-hysterical screaming at someone a foot away from their face, no cheating, no knocking out your girlfriend in an elevator, and so on. Needless to say, we are pretty far away from most if not all of those goals. Thus, when I'm asked if I want taxes to go towards building a new stadium, my answer will be: When those participating in professional team sports act like men in control of themselves, rather than boys out of control.

I disagree with you. While that is a noble goal, the single foundational purpose is either A) make money (point of view off the owners) or B) be entertaining (point of view of the fans). I think you are confusing "what I want public funds to support" with "what the goal of the product actually is"
