Are you dumb, The MLS and USL are two different leagues, USL wants to adapt a relegation system but the MLS doesn't, Messi plays in the MLS for the Eastern Conference side, Inter Miami. Which is currently 15th place, Also known as bottom table. Since the MLS doesn't have a relegation system then there is no way Inter Miami gets relegated. Messi should be able to carry his team to mid table to make the mls playoffs. Although I do think next season Inter Miami will not be first. The mls is not a farmers league. I think they will be around 6-4 place in the league as having a good striker can only get you so far. Hope this helped as an avid MLS viewer myself. Cheers!

An observation from the UK. There is huge interest in promotion and relegation, it is the defining aspect of every season. This is because every club in the country can aspire to great things. My local club plays at the eight level of English football, but there is a clear path to the top, and some clubs have achieved incredible things, literally going from local leagues to level 3 (Accrington, Newport, Wimbledon for example). Teams going the other way have made last season's level 5 the most exciting ever (witness the drama of Wrexham vs Notts County). The most incredible excitement is generated, leading to massive end of season crowds. If you get relegated you just build again and try to get back. I would have thought that sort of ethic would appeal to America, rather than the rich kid being protected from his own incompetence - the current ethic.
@JFP1988

The best thing about promotion and relegation is that it helps teams grow an organic fan base ...when a group of people from a town decide to form a team enter the league and progress to the tops it grows such a passionate fan base since the team has the DNA of the town/region embedded into it, it's struggles and everything...this is quite different from businessmen in New York for example saying San Diego has no football team ,let's make one....

But MLS currently makes most of its money on expansion fees. If they do true pro/rel, then you could make it to MLS by winning USL, and not paying 500 million dollars. Though I do like pro/rel, the side effects are that it usually causes only a few large teams to be able to compete. Bringing it to the MLS would destroy the values of the clubs, make the smaller markets worse, and thereby decrease fans for a growing market. Because the sport is still growing here, no one really has connections to these clubs, and if their local team is bad they won’t be interested or will just band wagon
@spencerl-yf6bg

Agree 100%. As much as I enjoy pro/rel from a fan perspective, a closed system is just more financially viable. It's one of the reasons the American sports leagues are more valuable than football/soccer leagues (including the EPL), despite having smaller fan bases. For example, Michael Jordan recently made 10X on the sale of his majority stake into one of the worst franchises in the NBA (Charlotte Hornets) after 13 years. Meanwhile, football giants like Barcelona are drowning in debt.

Playoffs doesn’t have anything to do with the drama and excitement of your team being in a relegation battle or achieving promotion after not being able to get to the top division previously. Playoffs are the standard for American sports and they’re good but they don’t measure up to pro/rel. It really adds so much more to the sport and to supporting a team that may not be very good because it punishes you for not being consistent. Every game there is something to play for, whereas in the USL Championship right now Las Vegas Lights is way at the bottom of the west and won’t be making it into the playoffs this season (unless a miracle happens). Hopefully pro/rel happens 🙏

There's tailgating, fight songs, band marches, football backyard BBQs, secret superstitions, costumes, signs, etc. Hell in colleges, PARENTS of the athletes, and even the students who aren't even players get into fights and riots outside stadium grounds. There's literally an ad-campaign by the Big-10 in college football that says "Born to be ______ alum." Baseball is the same deal, and baseball has been in America longer than ANY of the five major European leagues or any of their teams have been established. You go to a Giants-Dodgers game or a Cubs game and you'll know how much passion we have for sports. I had a neighbor who partied for 3 STRAIGHT DAYS after the Cubs won their first World Series in a 108 years. As a Bay-Area native, I was essentially destined to become a fan of the 49ers, Giants, A's, and Warriors, and hate any team in Southern California. In hockey, all I'll say is go to a Red Wings game. A way to (kind of) solve this would be to divide the MLS into 2 or maybe even 3 tiers. The MLS would be all the US professional teams and there would be a MLS A, MLS B, etc. This way you'd get a more competitive league because only the best teams play eachother. You would have relegation, which would make every game important for teams near the bottom. Relegation from the lowest MLS-league would not be possible. Right now MLS already has 29 teams, and there will only be joining more teams. So 2 leagues of 16 teams or 3 of 12 teams would sound okay to me

This would be amazing i would love this it would make the usl champianship way more competitive and might lead to it being a better leage than the mls which i would love since Im a fan of the riverhounds

It would change the sport worldwide. You will never know the real joy of a sport until there is competition which the pyramid system gives out in abundance. Even if your team is in a relegation battle one win hits so much harder than a win in 5th place.

Mls is in no way too big to lose. Most stadiums are half empty and the tv ratings are poor

I haven’t gotten into mls because I just never hear of it as much as the Europe leagues. If this happens, US football will be so much more exciting

This is a good sign. If this can help football/soccer grow in America and boost soccer national team to dominate this sport. This is it.

The only way football in America will ever be respected my Europe is if you can have 2 maybe 3 professional leagues like over here. I’m from England and even the teams that play in the league below professional have a team full of full time players.

Maybe it will help USL, but I doubt it. MLS will always be king in the US, and not having pro/rel is a huge reason why it will keep growing at an exponential pace.

You should check out the court case against USSF and MLS. Rocco Commisso has been keeping it going since the end of the NASL. The anti-trust lawsuit. If finally has been granted a court date.

Promotion,/relegation is where parity goes to die. If we have promotion and relegation in the MLS we will see the same three or four teams winning every year. The idea that this system is needed to have a big league is not correct, as most of the top sports leagues by revenue in the world are in America and don't have promotion and relegation.

Parity survives, Teams come and go. 40 plus English clubs have won the first Division since the 1890,s. Teams have their time in the sunshine and fade. Do you think manchester city won a Premier league title before 2011 or Newcastle?

The issue with football in the US in there’s not enough fans nor players to really have a second or third division if the people’s started watching football more it might expand in general but for now i don’t see it also here in Saudi we have second and third division but not only Saudis watching the sport actually the whole region watching and that means more income which gonna lead to more expansion and thats why we invest and spend money on players like crazy because it’s an investment for the future and few billions it’s nothing honestly for good investment like this , Messi being in InterMiami without improving the whole MLS is a wasted opportunity honestly but i’m sure they gonna have bigger plans than just having Messi

Well the reason mls doesnt do relegation and promotion is because it would destroy the clubs financially If they did do promotion/relegation they could have the last place of each conference get relegated and then the 2nd to last of each confrence play in a playoff

As a non American I’m telling you this is the only thing that will attract outside interest in your league long term. The fact there’s absolutely no jeopardy in the MLS makes it boring from the get go, it feels like a glorified friendly tournament. Having a promotion and relegation system would encourage teams to get better every single season, it naturally grows the quality of the league over a long period of time and creates more fan interest in it.

Trust me. No one is "too big to lose" and especially not the mls. The mls falling off is a very realistic possibility and not a strech. Whatever gets popular attracts attentions which equals more sponsors money and then it snowballs.

This needs to happen tbh for better games and more aggressive games and for smaller clubs to be able to compete in the highest tier leagues. No relagation/promotion makes football less interesting//Swedish football fan where we have relegation. The best players will still be in mls because 8/10 will just witch club if the club is relegated just like here in Europe.

This is a wonderful idea. The US never really had a reliable second tier system and having that would grow the sport exponentially. I mean the Richmond Kickers have been playing in the second tier since 1995 and has bounced around second tier leagues. If the USL is able to do this and make a reliable 3rd tier that would be elite

I think the USL and MLS need to work together, we know some of those squads have tallent, look at FC Cincinnati (I hate that they're my example as a Crew fan but) they can honestly compete

I think that when MLS does eventually adopt pro/rel, it likely won’t be before 2030 and if that were to happen, it would make sense for the USL to turn into something like the EFL. The top three teams in the championship rise up to MLS, and the bottom 3 teams fall to the Championship. Conferences would need to be eliminated for this to work. If MLS adopts pro/rel, it doesn’t make sense for both the MLS and USL to technically be on the same level of the pyramid
