We at Indian Railways are currently having both ALCOS and EMDs on our networks. Alcos have been the backbone of diesel traction for a long time but since the past decade or so there has been a shift and EMDs are being aggressively produced. EMDs 4000 HP/4500 HP/5000 HP produced till now. 5000 HP one undergoing trials as of now .

Superb! I bought a HO scale RSD15 from Factory Direct trains, with sound fitted, made by BlueLine, it's really awsome. Even people who aren't into trains love it :)

Nice to hear an old Alco chugging . She sounds like it needs a good overhaul and is a little off its clean throttle , but its still running .

What a show! ALCo/MLW locos are the best, they growl, they spit out clouds of exaust when reved up, and from what I’ve heard of them, they’re solid workhorses too! I have yet to meet one in,person, but it’s on the bucket list.

SproketBox I live near Cayahouga Valley National Park in Ohio, and the scenic railway there only runs Alco's; RS18's FPA4's you name it

Alcos have character. The way they look, and the way they sound...EMD can't touch them.

Nice to hear US locos actually running instead of those horns drowning out the clag and thrash! Great stuff anyone else recommend any other vids of US loco music (without the stupid horns blowing)!

I love EMD and ALCO. I like EMD more, but I would still like to see an ALCO again.

Agree with tarmac2001, it indeed sounds like a burbling and hissing big block, love that. And it is indeed a bit like tha Sulzers used by British manufacturers, especialy the double row 12 cylinders used in classes 44 to 47, altough not so loud as an Alco. EMD's aren't bad at all to, because in Belgium. where I live close to, some locomotive classes powered by non turbo 12 and 16-567c's retired just recently from active duty, the oldest being from 1954!, I loved their sound on a incline!

Ah the RS18....The best unit MLW ever built,no surprise more than half of the CP RS18's are still running, the 251 motor seems to work well at 1800HP better than any other rating on a MLW/ALCO loco, though i loved the big 6 motor C630M,M630 & M636's & also the C424's first, the RS18 is the one MLW that i thought CPR might not get rid of when the Century's were purged, but they did & alot of them were scooped up like this one on the second hand market.

@307OLDS werent alco's also steam engines too? maybe they just got left in the dust cause they were slow in conversion. EMD started right out of the gates with diesel electrics if i remember correctly.

@Skoda130 The ones I used to have in my fleet were not quite as reliable and took more maintenance.....but they were 10 years older than the same EMD's I had. They were also harder starting units. But by God once those C420's were running they could pull!

Yea the only way to get an EMD to smoke like that is to let the power packs go bad. I worked on ships powered by 20-645's and 16-251's and while it was easier to work on and sleep on the EMD ships the Alcos sounded nice and looked like coal burners. Look up some videos of LSRC 1195 that thing smoked!

If that locomotive is stilll working for CP, I'd feed it a CAT 3516 railroad service engine, and pluck that Alco motor out and rebuild the sucker, putting it aside for some other MLW rs18 which is in dire need of it. That's one smoky sucker... but it's nice to see one at work.

@307OLDS I'll take a Dash-9 or an AC any day of the week over an EMD. Twice the pull and half the noise. Other guys don't like 'em because you have to anticipate throttle moves with a GE and that requires thinking.

Lets all stop talking shit about EMD, seriously if alcos were so great then where is massive fleet on the class 1's??? dont get me wrong I love alcos just like the next man, but I am not about to start talking shit about EMD. If you wanna talk shit, talk about those hidious GE turds out there on the rails. Nothing compares to the beauty of a PA, or the power of a c630 but EMD is a better locomotive for tractive effort. But I would love to see more ALCOs out there!!!
