“Pæan of the Northern Frontier” (MN: ᠤᠮᠠᠷᠠᠳᠤ ᠭᠢᠯᠢ ᠶᠢᠨ ᠤᠶᠠᠩᠭᠠᠲᠤ ᠲᠡᠭᠤᠦ / Умард хилийн уянгат дуу / Umard hiliin uyangat duu; CN: 北疆讚歌 / Běijiāng zàn’gē), an Inner Mongolian ode of praise.
In his later years, Mao Zedong remained deferent to his mortality. On many occasions, he spoke casually of the natural laws of life and death. He said to his staff: “All people will eventually die. Mao Zedong is a person, so Mao Zedong too will die."
He also said: “When I die, you can throw a celebration party. You will dress nicely, brightly in red or floral clothes, and attend the party with joy and glee, and proudly step up to the stage to speak. You can say: ‘Today we hold a victorious conference. Mao Zedong has died. Let us all celebrate the triumph of the dialectic.’ If people do not die, from Confucius to the present, the earth will no longer have any room left.”
Mao also explained his dialectical materialist conception of life and death. He said to his staff: “When I lived, I ate a lot of fish. After I die, I shall be cremated, and my ashes scattered into the Yangtze River to feed the fish. You can say to the fish: ‘Oh fish, Mao Zedong has come to repay you. He has eaten you when he lived, and now you shall eat him. Eat and fatten up, so that you can better serve the people.’ Such is the law of conservation.”
There is no life that never ceases, nor objects that last forever.
At 00.10 on 9 September 1976, the great Mao Zedong drew his last breath at the age of 83.
