So the so called Slickrock in Eastern Utah and made most famous by the Slickrock Trail in Moab is in fact very grippy sandstone. The traction is so extreme that it took us a couple of days to adapt and have confidence climbing hills that would otherwise end in disaster when riding motorcycles on the trails closer to our homes. The name "Slickrock" was apparently coined by the old timers passing through by horse and wagon where the metal shoes on the horses and metal running surface of wagon wheels could get no traction. Also a surprise to many, the original trail was created in the late 1960's in hopes of attracting people to ride the increasingly popular trail bikes such as the CT90 - www.rei.com/bl... - I dreamed of riding this trail when I first got into mountain biking in the mid 1980's, and though I plan to come back by pedal power in the future, I was thrilled to ride this trail earlier this month on my XT250. This little goat of a bike has a super short first gear that is perfect for climbing these often steep petrified sand dunes.
