There are footages of Mobb Deep playing this song in 1993 (although it was out in 1995), and even P said he was 17 when he wrote this song, so we are talking about 1991. Imagine being 17 years, surrounded by crime and all the drama in the projects and still being able to produce a song like this and flip a sample that took 15 years to be found. That's why the MOBB were so special! Rest easy P, no more pain now!

The crazy part is people discredit sampling as musical talent. As someone who took the time to learn guitar and piano, I can say that sampling and DJ work is just as (if not more) time consuming and challenging. This beat is an all time classic.

It's that indtruments require technical skill with your hands and staying on rhythm. Production can be done with knowledge alone but if a producer can play instruments they're likely to be better. Like there ain't no good producer that doesn't know piano

Herbie Hancock is an actual genius. He had a stronger relation with hip hop than what we could imagine. Back in 1983 he was scratching on "rockit" and he also composed Cantaloupe Island, which is sampled for Cantaloop

Havoc is one of my all time favorite producers, this dude can turn something like Jessica into this gritty, dark street anthem. Its also how I got into listening to records/crate digging. Wow, credit to whoever uncovered this finally. I wish I had still been following breaks closely when this was revealed. This was a bigger mystery than 'Nas Is Like' for the longest time. I remember when everyone used to credit the score from 'To Sir With Love' for this...never sounded close enough though. I didn't expect the dual pitch at all from Havoc. Nice piece of sampling.

Here's a cool little history on this song: If you listen carefully when the piano switches from one pitch to the other, you can hear the recording breaking, for example at 1:04 you can hear it. Why?
