I'll tell you something: all of these Brit panel comedy shows are *heavily* scripted with moments of improv. Or did you think they were so pitch perfect on so many jokes by so many different comedians... or did you just think they are just naturally brilliant on their feet and the show has really really good editors? Hmmm, and what happens during stage rehearsals if it's not scripted?

@@lawjef As someone else pointed out, you must be pretty boring if you’ve never had a conversation with your mates like this where your just competing to make each other laugh the most. But anyway who cares if it’s scripted, it’s still funny all the same. Not that I think it is. Tbh I’d probably be more impressed by their acting skills if they’re able to pull all this off than if they just turned out to be funny people. Maybe what you mean by scripted is what we all already know as obvious. In that through the week they probably think up funny jokes related to the current news since they can probably guess what’s going to be talked about.
@piranha5211
Жыл бұрын
@@jaymercer4692 Its possible to disagree with somebody without insulting them personally, you know. Even on YT. All British panel shows are scripted to some degree, some more, some less, and they're also edited quite a bit (occasionally comedians and staff talk about "behind the scenes", that's how I know). It's also indirectly obvious because Dara mentions "balance" that they're supposed to maintain. You can bet that balance is written into the script as well. The host's role is more scripted than anyone else's. And sometimes you can see that the panelists have notebooks, so they've clearly prepared some things. What scripting means in this context isn't that it's like a play where each line of dialogue is pre-written, but that there are outlines of what topics will be talked about in-depth and who'll do specific bits. Apparently comedians also have some input into that, if they want to present something in specific. I often recognize bits from the "Wheel of News" section as standard bits from comedians' own routines because I follow a lot of them outside of this show. That section is rarely improvised. I also think they know the subjects of "Scenes We'd Like to See" beforehand, but I have no evidence for that; it just feels that way to me. There is still some improv in there too though, because sometimes there are callbacks to something said earlier in the show. A lot of the banter, especially among the comedians who know each other well, that's spontaneous. Nobody needs to script the needling of Dara, and there are definitely whole runs of jokes that build up naturally, and yes, that's quite like a bunch of mates hanging out together, only with people who specialize in humour, so it's still funny even to outsiders. I like this show exactly as it is; if it weren't scripted and edited at all, there would be some dreadfully awkward times when a panelist doesn't gel (it still happens occasionally, but it's rare). Pure improv is impressive, yes, but it's a special skill, not every comedian is good at it. A really well-written zinger can be just as amazing in its own way.
