Of course it's bloody fake.🙂 It's a TV show. Look at the credits. Scriptwriters, see? The comics get to prepare some of their own material for certain parts of the programme; the rest of the show is pre-arranged and loosely scripted so that they can get enough material recorded in the available time, on budget. They all have the answers to all of the topical news questions on screens in front of them; most of the set-piece jokes and material will have been checked over at the pre-recording meeting. It's Dara's job to knit the whole chaotic mess of humour and often aggressively competitive 'star' egos into a usable form. Sometimes they let a completely new joke thread develop live and keep it in if it's working well, but time is precious (think of all the tech staff being paid whilst some unfunny deluded tit is messing about and you'll see why things have to be pre-arranged). It's TV. There's not a lot of freedom. Which is why they always have the same regular professional stand-up comics to help keep the laughs coming. The new guests being given a trial run are usually far too nervous to be amusing, so they get treated gently and given a chance to get a laugh or two on their own, but they tend to be a bit lame once they find out how disjointed and weird the TV recording process is. It's nothing like they imagined after seeing the tightly-edited broadcast-ready shows. Fake? Yep. If you want pure, live, unscripted improv, go to a comedy club. Prepare for disappointment, though. On a good night you'll get a 30% 'hit' rate - most of the time it'll be embarrassingly shite and you won't even be able to raise a smile. So raise a glass and drink lots of beer; it'll seem funnier. All of the regular MTW guests are top comics or stand-ups; see one of them live if you don't believe they can work without a script. They can. That's how they got good enough to appear on TV. It'll mean paying for a ticket, though, because seats at BBC studio recordings are always free. Dara himself is brilliant on stage. Super sharp. Mock the Week works precisely because it's 'fake'. (And don't forget that everybody's sober.) The show plays to the strengths of its regular performers and depends on their ability to adapt and create routines that fit the format. There's real talent there, but TV is a harsh mistress. Watch one of the end-of-year out-takes shows. Most of the studio time is taken up with Dara redoing fluffed introductions, links and lines; tech people adjusting microphones; make-up girls rushing on to cover up sweat patches or shiny foreheads; sound guys complaining about audience heckles; cutting out offensive stuff that the show's lawyers won't let them use; cleaning up long pauses; adding extra groans, boos, or cheers; and generally trying to keep the big-name stars happy while the new-boys (and occasional new-gals) are crapping themselves under pressure. Welcome to the magical world of television.😁
