Great lecture series! 48:30 "This PdV has the wrong sign in some sense." I think the +PdV is consistent with the -FdX, but it all depends on how your variables are defined. dW = +PdV if W is the work done by the gas on its external environment. (Case 1) dW = -PdV if W is the work done by the external environment on the gas. (Case 2) Assuming Case 1: dW = -Fdx if F is the force exerted by the external fields/boundaries on the gas, and the dW = +Fdx if F is the force exerted by the gas on the external fields/boundaries.

Because he took it as work done by system for pdv... But in generalised force displacement he took it as work done on the system

David, "log" has been used to define entropy as that makes ENTROPY additive just like Energy. You could have used any function to define it.

Lets say there are two system A and B then the Total no of microstates are = Omega_a*Omega_b, Where as energy is E_total = E_A + E_B in similar fashion S_total = S_B + S_B. I don't know any other function that can change multiplication to addition. I hope I cleared your doubt over use of log.

@ 22:45 he says that the surface area of the shell is proportional to radius (ε^1/2) but shouldn't it be proportional to sq of the radius?
@agnivadatta1567
4 жыл бұрын
It's the derivative of volume with respect to radius. Here the volume goes as e^3/2.

I am having difficulty making sense of the circle diagram at 21:50. Is the area of the circle meant to correspond to epsilon and the radius, momentum?
@Yashodhan1917
5 жыл бұрын
Both momentum, I think. Since momentum is proportional to eps^1/2
@bibekgautam512

He's showing the momentum space. The radius gives the magnitude of momentum. The shell of d-epsilon thickness he shades is the "volume" in momentum space which correspond to the energy between epsilon and delta epsilon.

i have the impression that using "log" is more than just definition. "ln" which is the inverse of "e" which is a phenomena in nature that dN ~ N.

In lecture one we started assuming that in microcanonical ensemble all the accessible microstates are equally probable which means the probability of occupying the microstates is same for all accessible microstates but in lecture three what we did is we maximize the probability which means some microstates are there which are less probable compared to other microstates in the same microcanonical ensemble...I think i went astray please somebody help me out...
@sagarmahapatra3628

Actually that is the most probable macrostate not micro that is maximizzed means there is one macrostate that is most probable but all the microstates are still equally probable

Let us consider there are 100 microstates of a system and it has 5 macrostates namely A B C D & E. From the fundamental theory of statistics all the microstates are equally probable with probability 0.01. Now lets say the number of micrsotates in the macrostates are as follows.... A---- 40 B---- 20 C---- 15 D---- 15 E---- 10 Then here we can say that the macrostate A has the maximum probability with a value of 0.4 and others are less probable macrostates.

why are we multiplying Ω(E) and Ω'(E') in the probability of a macrostate with energy E?
@kaushikkangsabanik1140

as we are assuming the that the two subsystems, are more or less independent, the states that the entire system can have should be the multiplication of the states of the two sub systems. that is why we he did it..

@jdidiieiee462
4 жыл бұрын
We can divide the phase space in any way we like according to our resolution, but from the quantum mechanics we know that Del Q.Del P>h and also volume of the phase space is V = integral(dq's dp's) so for each pair of q and p one h comes out (as the best resolution, the most fundamental one we have). Notice that this is just a use of resolution and no other quantum idea has been borrowed.
