Modal verbs are auxiliary verbs or helping verbs that change the nature of the main verb.
Let's understand with an example.
I can go to the market to fetch vegetables.
"Go" is the main verb of the sentence.
In this sentence the modal verb is can that expresses the ability to go - can go.
Replace can with should and the sentence becomes
I should go to the market to fetch vegetables.
The modal verb here is should which expresses the necessity to go to the market - should go.
Whether you can go to the market or not is a different issue, but there is a need to go to the market and that need is expressed by the modal verb should.
Let's use another modal verb with the same sentence
I may go to the market to fetch vegetables.
While the main verb go remains the same, now the modal verb is may.
I may go expresses a possibility. There is a chance that I may go to the market.
You can also change
I can go to the market to fetch vegetables.
to a question by simply putting the modal verb can in the beginning
Can I go to the market to fetch vegetables?
