use way more flux and keep the end of the wire a bit shorter.

@@RetroGamesNow86 also, what temp do you solder with,i use 325-350 depending the job,use some decent flux and solder, best is to use leaded, the technique you used was good, but you need just more flux, those pads are small, the longer you keep the iron on,more chance to rip a pad on the flex, recently did the ps2 retrogem,i did all gems and xboxhd+ stellar, best is you solder from the legs to the flex and vice versa,so you get really strong connections.

@@Fille-lj1qv I recently got a temperature controlled soldering station, I didn't have one when I filmed this video so in all honestly I don't know what temperature I was soldering at, but it was at the highest setting. one big thing I learned from this is to stick to one type of flux, I shouldn't have mixed no clean flux and rosin paste flux, it just made the work a little more difficult for me. But I've bought good quality flux now for future projects. Oh I absolutely know what you mean by ripping a pad on the flex cable, I ruined 2 flex cables and a whole VA1 Dreamcast MOBO trying to do this project. It hurt! but I managed to get it done on the 3rd try 3 years later! right now I'm craving challenging mods like this, I hope to get my hands on the Retro GEM as that one looks as challenging just like this one. we'll see. thanks for your comments!

the Dreamcast is such an amazing console! and yes this mod was super challenging, I'm not kidding when I say it took me 3 years to complete this mod! I literally attempted two times and both failed miserably and just put it all to the side, it wasn't until about a month ago that I started to muster some new found courage from a installation video I saw here on youtube, I'm glad I didn't give up because it's an awesome experience to hook up your dreamcast to a flat screen TV and play in crisp 1080p, well on my TV 960p looks so good! I am now ready to start making a lot of content on the dreamcast! maybe I'll check out that game you mention! (I don't own it physically but I'll be using the optical drive emulator to play it, don't tell anyone shhh lol)

I will never understand how the flex cable soldering works Watched tons of tutorials, got myself some good stannol desolder wick. Got good flux and a Pine V2 solder ONE very small drop of solder ruined my N64 ;..; And i had absolutely 0 chance to get it away nor did the desolder wick work in any way It just wouldn't work ^^'

The solder is like "sucked" between the chip pins and the flex traces, the flux helps this and if there's too much solder you can always remove the excess either by "sucking" some with the soldering tip / cleaning the tip / sucking / cleaning, usually you can drag a solder ball along the pins to one the of the chip edges too so that you only need to clean this, it depends on the tip you use too, I guess a tip too thin won't help too much for that, the chizel tip would, then if the solder ball is too big the wick will suck all the excess and more if you use if too much, again you should always have some flux other the solder

I know it's nerve-racking but if you keep practicing you should be able to get the technique right
