For those of you looking to do this to a Huntsman TE, please watch my before/after sound comparison video here: kzitem.info/news/bejne/r6yAl6Gea4qcmX4 The procedure for the TE is almost exactly the same, but there's an extra hidden screw in the back (watch my video to for how to get to it). Also, if you don't want to push the switches out by force, you can squeeze the two clips on the side of each switch together (from underneath the PCB) a little and then they slide right out.

For the flat black cable, there is a kind of small plastic lever that you flip up and it comes loose very easily. There is no need to take the whole controller board off. To put is back you simply reverse the process by facing the metallic conecters down an putting the plastic lever down. (:

For anyone else going to do this mod or anyone wondering why he couldn’t get the ribbon cable off at 2:04 this is because it has a lock to it. Good thing he didn’t pull to hard or he could have broke it. You need to pull up on the locking part and then it should come off easily.

There's always a risk involved when it comes to disassembling the keyboard. The original Huntsman is also an older design and I think more difficult to open than the Mini or TE. But once you get to the PCB, the switches and stabs can be removed the same way and lubing them will help reduce the sound, but I'm not sure if it will become quieter than your voice (I guess this depends on your mic as well, if it can cut out some background noise - if you're talking about voice comms in games).

It's easiest to get them out if you approach from the front. The rectangular plastic bases have clips that when compressed, allow for them to come free from the PCB. I wouldn't go as far as calling the TE "hot" swappable, because if you try to turn in on without all the switches in, it can freak out. I don't know the exact size, but I used the largest philips head in my electronics repair kit. I can also recommend the Wowstick, which is an affordable electric screwdriver that comes with an overwhelming amount of bits for any project (including this one).

For the razer huntsman te how have the keys held up? I really want to do this I’m just afraid of breaking my keyboard. @bigxie
3 жыл бұрын
Nothing bad has happened to the switches since I put these on about 5 months ago. Granted, I've picked up some more custom boards since then so I don't use the TE as frequently anymore, but when I do, it works just as well as when I initially performed the mods. I think if you really understand what's going on in the keyboard, you can see that the switches are literally used to block a beam of light that shines across each key on the PCB. If anything were to be interrupted by the lube, it would happen initially, and not over time. What could happen over time (but hasn't to me, maybe due to less frequent use), is that the lubrication offered by the PTFE dry lube will wear off and require another spray a year or so down the line.

@bigxie
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the lube will make them smoother and get rid of the spring ping, but not the click. The foam just helps absorb some extra echoes, but it's really the lube that makes majority of the difference. A lot of guides online will tell you not to lube clicky switches since that can reduce the clicking sound, but those are talking about traditional MX style mechanical switches. The way the Razer optical clicky switches work, it's more like clicking a pen, and that mechanism is not affected by the lube (so it will still click loudly and clearly, even after lubing).

@bigxie

Hey, did you add dielectric grease on the stabs? If it's too thick, the added resistance could be causing it to get stuck coming back up. Another thing to look out for is if the built in stabilizer (on the switch itself) is slightly out of its grooves. That can happen very easily when popping them out of the PCB and can either cause the switch to have a harder time coming back up or get stuck altogether.

Hey Tyler, the keycaps are replaceable and most 60% kits will fit, since the Huntsman Mini uses a standard layout. There's no need to lube the keyboard or anything just to switch the keycaps. The only sort of tricky thing is that the stabilized keys (shift, backspace, spacebar, enter) have stabilizer posts attached to them that need to be transplanted from the original keycaps on to the new replacements.

@bigxie
3 жыл бұрын
It shouldn't be too hard, but Razer does include their cable which has an extra thick plastic surround piece around the connector, which is also slotted to accept the ridges on the Huntsman Mini case. The connector is also really recessed. These additional friction points will make it harder to pull out or insert the USB-C cable. If it's causing you a lot of issues, you can just use a different USB-C cable without as much plastic around the connector and it will plug in and out normally.

Hi, you can definitely replace the red switches with purple, but the hard part is sourcing the switches since they're not sold individually. If you're looking for purple switches, the best bet would to be to look for a defective regular Huntsman that someone is selling for cheap. Regarding the lubing, yeah it's not too clear in the video but you basically just spray up the switch from the bottom. If you need some visuals, a few other channels have since released similar videos after seeing mine. I think randomfrankp has a pretty good one you can check out.

You choose clicky but you dampens, if you want go silent why dont go for linear?
@bigxie
3 жыл бұрын
The point of these mods is not actually for silence, but to get rid of the spring ping from the switches that then bounces around in the empty case. That's what the lube and foam addresses. The linear version of the keyboard has the exact same issues and would bother me the same amount. The spring ping may actually be even more noticeable on the linear version due to the lack of the click masking it. The good news is that these mods apply just as effectively for all versions of the Huntsman keyboards.

@@paoloaustria1577 Hey Paolo, I had a few switches do this as well. In my case, it was due to the metal bar on the switch itself being not fully seated in the plastic clip, making the switch get stuck as it moved up and down. This is very easy for it to happen when popping the switches out of the PCB, so I just made sure to check and fix each switch before putting them back on the board. To fix it, you kind of just pop the metal bar (switch stabilizer) back into place and click it a few times to ensure it's working smoothly.

Hey Will, I think it's among the easier stock keyboards to mod since there are only screws to remove in order to open it and you don't even need to remove the ribbon cable (which may be trickiest part of the process) if you unscrew the daughter board. The other parts are just tedious work (removing each switch and lubing them). It's similar in difficulty to assembling somewhat complex furniture (in reverse). But if you're worried about breaking the keyboard or losing the factory warranty, then I would recommend skipping these mods (especially if the stock sound or noise doesn't bother you).
