Zouave rifles were called so because the zouave troops preferred the shorter length 2 band rifles over the 3 band rifles. They could fire a round, drop to the guts, reload the shorter weapons, get up and fire quicker than they could with the longer guns. They zouave units were supposed to be a more maneuverable, faster paced unit. They were used to rush artillery pieces and things like that. So the 2 band rifles were just unofficially named after those units.

I think the most attractive rifle was the 1841 Mississippi rifle , it's a beautiful rifle .

I looked at an original today that just came into a local shop, I was called in to tell the manager what he had bought. It is rather rough but all there, with careful cleanup it will be serviceable. Who knows, it might end up in my hands.

Good luck in the bargaining process! I own a reproduction 1863 that shoots about as well as I can hold and aim a iron sighted arm. Owning an original would be a special thrill ,❤
