thank you for the detailed analysis! also appreciate you showing the car's interior ceiling with the rack on. it's surprisingly hard to find good video of that on the Internets

Folks who watched this video previously, I just published a part 2 where I tested bikes on a rear hitch rack in combination with and without the ski box.

Very useful. Thanks. Trying to find if anyone has tested with a bike roof rack with 1 or 2 bikes.

Well I didn't do any testing on a roof unfortunately, but I did do some testing with bikes on a rear rack in a video I just posted today. You may find some useful information there.

I was surprised (again) about how much more efficient the Model 3 is over the (gasoline) 2011 Subaru... 440% more energy for the gasoline powered car. And I have a 2013 Leaf as well as the 2018 Model 3, so I should know these things, but it's still surprising just how much more efficient the electric vehicle is. Thanks for the testing videos!

Yes when you put the numbers down on the page in the same units (kWh/100km), the difference really jumps out at you!

Just ordered a model 3 in Vancouver, happy to see the range hit is pretty minimal with roof rack. Planning to get the roof rack soon as they show up again in the shop to carry my mountain bike. Great video guys, well done! 👍

I'll be interested to hear how much of an impact the bike rack has, and then when loaded with a bike too. I'm planning to get a 2" receiver and mount my Northshore Rack in the spring, ready for mountain bike and BMX season :)

Yes, will be interested to compare notes. I currently use a platform style hitch rack on my leaf which results in minor if any range loss, but decided to skip the hitch and go roof rack on the model 3 this time. I’ll update whenever I get a hold of the roof rack.

Hey Andrew. So how did the bolt length compare once you put the rack back on the second time?

It was easier to re-install (though not perfect, still had to fiddle) - I actually took footage of it and am hoping to get a short video up this weekend with more details.

Just got a link to this from insideevs.com. What's your average Wh/km? I've got a Model 3 AWD w/ 19s and my lifetime Wh/km is around 211 based in Vancouver. Your numbers in the Kootenays with a roof rack look amazing.

My lifetime so far is ~ 195 Wh/km over a total of 4,000 km. About 3,000 km of that was before the roof rack was installed, almost all of that has been with winter tires (Nokian Hakkapelitta 9 studded) on the 18" wheels with aero covers on.

I bought the rear-wheel drive, so it isn't as good as the AWD Subaru. Having said that, I think it is the best two-wheel drive car I've driven or owned!

With roof rack on vs. not having one at all...is there any difference in wind noise? Also can you post a pic or 360 degree walkaround a video showing the whole car from all angles with just the roof rack on. Please stand little bit back so I can see the full car with the rack. Thanks.

Nice video! I've been researching the feasibility of a roof top tent system, and how it would affect my range. I did notice something to point out. Speaking on the efficiency of a vehicle as it relates to ambient temperature. Yes, aerodynamics are worse when air is colder and more dense, but with internal combustion vehicles, denser air leads to much stronger and more efficient combustion. This offsets and surpasses any range loss due to the aerodynamics. Of course this doesn't apply to Tesla, but you mentioned "all vehicles."

I don't know your math, but that last table is literally impossible. Over 400% increase in energy per distance on the Forester? That would mean you get about ~1/5 the MPG, or drop from 25 to ~6 MPG. That doesn't pass the sniff test at all. Check your equation.
@kootenayevfamily4208

You are misunderstanding the table. The bottom row is base case, against which the other two rows are compared. Take another look and get back to me if you wish to discuss further. Best regards, Andrew

@@kootenayevfamily4208 Oh I see. Well of course a battery will be more efficient than a generator. So at that point I don't really understand the purpose of having roof racks in the conversation at all if you are just comparing an EV vs ICE.

@@TheCloudFoot perhaps a fair point. I was including the Subaru for context on energy use overall - it was a vehicle I had data for. I wanted to show that while the roof rack + pod is a significant hit to the range of the Model 3, in the grand scheme of energy use, it was still a lot lower than our previous car (being able to mount a decent pod allowed us to have similar cargo capacity as our Forester).
