Dan continues building the 5 HO scale locomotives he photographed on the front of a Southern Pacific grain freight train in Truckee, California in 1993. In this episode, Dan reworks the pilots and Kadee coupler mounts for the Kato SD40, representing Conrail 6283, and a Kato SD45, representing SP 7482. Then Dan works on the interior of Conrail 6283, beginning the process of prepping the model for lighting. Eventually the engine will have DCC and sounds, and LED lights. Dan shows how to assemble Kadee 158 whisker couplers, how to shorten Kadee draft gear boxes, basic styrene techniques, and how to use a 2-56 tap to put threads inside a metal hole. Dan also shows how to construct a barrier that will keep light from shining through the see-through fan openings on top of the model.
