On today's Monster Hobbies Model Car Garage we will be looking at The 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 Hardtop By Revell. This is a model car unboxing video I hope you will enjoy.
During the Muscle Car Wars of the 1960's and 1970's, the Oldsmobile 442 was one of the earliest combatants and consistently among the strongest contenders. The 442 debuted as an option package for 1964 F-85 and Cutlass models which were part of GM's family of "A" body intermediates. The 442 name originally came from the car having a four-barrel carburetor, a four-speed manual transmission and dual exhaust. The definition varied over time, but the 442 stayed dedicated to its performance mission. By 1968 the 442 became a stand alone model, still based on Oldsmobile's popular Cutlass. As 1971 dawned, the golden age of Detroit muscle was fading, but that year's Olds 442 was one of the last stand outs of this exciting period. W-30 denoted the ultimate 442, and it's the version Revell chose for this kit. The W-30 option performance package included a specially prepared 455-cube V8 good for 350 horse power and a distinctive twin scooped hood with functional ram air induction along with bold hood and bodyside stripes.
1971 model year spotting tips: egg-crate mesh in silver grille, new front clip which included the plastic grille divider molded into the clip instead of hanging off the center of the hood, circular parking lights in front bumper, horizontal tail lights with no vertical bars in them. (Those came in 1972, the final year for this body style.)
The 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 W-30 Hardtop By Revell is an excellent representation of this car. This model kit will fit nicely on your shelf placed in order after the AMT 1969 Oldsmobile Cutlass and 1969 Hurst Oldsmobile, and between the Jo-Han 1970 Oldsmobile and the Jo-Han 1974 Oldsmobile model kits.
This kit can be built with one of two options. Either as an automatic or a manual transmission car. This is reflected in the transmission, floor pedals and center interior console where you get separate parts for each build version. Also included is an extra rear axle and differential cover to build the standard rear axle or the optional W-27 rear axle. The model kit is also equipped with all the parts needed for an air conditioned car.
The engine consists of 28 parts with the automatic transmission option adding 3 more parts or two more for the manual. These parts include left and right transmission halves, automatic transmission pan, engine block right and left halves, cylinder heads, valve covers, fuel pump, oil pan, starter motor, oil filter, 4-bbl carburetor, intake manifold, coil on bracket, distributor cap, right and left exhaust manifolds, alternator, power steering pump, front timing chain cover/water pump/oil filler tube, fan belt and pulleys, fan, fan clutch, air conditioning unit, upper and lower radiator hoses, air conditioning hoses and a 2-piece air cleaner.
The interior features Oldsmobile's bucket seats in two pieces, your choice of manual or automatic floor consoles with shift levers, manual or automatic floor pedals, floor pan with front inner fender aprons, floor boards, rear bench seat and package shelf molded as a unit, separate left and right hand side door panels, dashboard with instrument panel decals, steering column and rally steering wheel.
The chassis includes individual front and rear suspension assemblies, steering box, exhaust pipes and exhaust tips, drive shaft, coil springs, rear shocks, 3-piece radiator and support, firewall with Bendix Power Brakes, battery and wiper motor, and your choice of 2 rear differentials. Wheels are 3-piece Rally's mounted on Firestone tires.
The instructions for the Revell 1971 Olds 442 W-30 are easy to follow and include illustrations for the engine block, wheels and interior, suspension, manifolds and exhaust pipes and other such items. If you wish to match colors to Oldsmobile factory specifications, your local General Motors dealership or autobody repair shop should be able to assist you with these paint codes.
The detail on the plastic parts are crisp and clear and go together quite easily.
The chrome on this model kit is excellent and really enhances the look of the finished car. The grill includes the quad headlights, turn signal lights, and grille divider just like the real 442. To finish off the chrome on the body, I recommend using Bare Metal Foil and a brand new #11 hobby blade as well as a Molotow Chrome Pen.
Overall, the 1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442 is an excellent model kit that goes together very well. You will be surprised at the number of parts and details on this kit!
