Glad to see Dapol taking responsibility and fixing their wagons. Also Sam, I think you should test wheel concentricity, weight per wheel, and (rough) centre of gravity. It would really help determine quality and thoughtfulness of design, as it affects all areas of performance! In fact today, I am re-pressing and trueing up the wheels on the Flying Scotsman in my pfp. It just kept derailing despite my best efforts. Thanks!!!

I read many are complaining about Dapol wagons. From my experience, and I have about 50 of them, I have no such problems. The trick is to match the coupler heights when marshalling your goods train. If there are differences in coupler height on ANY brand of wagon, then disappointment is likely to follow . There is always some variance in heights, so a little care and observation when joining hem up can save a lot of frustration once the train is moving.

Another great video, thank you. As to details and cost I would not be prepared to pay the sort of prices now being asked (actually I would not buy Hornby models anyway) but if the removal of all the add-ons such as firebox flicker resulted in reduction of prices by £100 or more it would certainly encourage me to return to RTR models instead of building kits

Thanks for sharing Christopher - yeah I wonder whether that'd be a good move for them... I'm not sure why they're looking for ways to put the prices up, when surely they should be trying to keep the costs down... after all, they can't compete with the likes of Rapido and Accurascale on features/details... to aim for budget price ranges might be smart for them! Just bought Hornby’s new Riddles 2-6-0 2MT from Harburn Hobbies of Edinburgh. They have currently on offer special discounted models of both the Border Counties (Waverley Route) and County Durham versions of Riddles 2MT at £197+P&P. Yes it’s a lot of money for a 2-6-0 tender locomotive, but having grown up in the Scottish Borders and watched the Waverley Route being unceremoniously ripped up in the late 1960/70’s, it was an absolute ‘must have’. A truly beautiful runner with no bits falling off. Hornby are back! 🚂😃.

The droop in Dapol couplings has never had any significant problems for me - although the hooks constantly fall off the main body of the coupling. It’s the shallow wheel flanges that cause repeated derailing here. Swapping the wheels out with Hornby ones and they stop derailing altogether.

Another useful edition. Lots of features are great but also means there is more to go wrong so I am all for the option to have them. The trouble with that is that it would mean smaller production runs of each type unless Hornby wants to risk over-producing some. There is no easy answer. In buying any model I have to think first how much it is worth to me in case it has some kind of accident. New models tend to be much more fragile than older ones.

Funnily enough I never had any derailments with the Dapol wagons. I got about 10 of them now and I think they are great. They are nice budget alternatives to make a long train. Instead of derailing I have a lot of them which had broken springs for the tension lock so what happens is that the coupling is stuck to one side, so when a loco wants to couple, it isn't in the straight position. I had that about 3 or 4 times now and also the coupling hook is so loose, it drops out which never happened to any other wagons I own. Meanwhile I get the Oxford LNER open wagon and it was fine. Glad to see Dapol improving their design to use more standard looking pockets rather than the weird plastic spring which is very fragile and easy to break. I have barely missed out on their new WD Naval stores wagon at Hattons, but learning they are making improvements, I'm hoping their next release will have these upgrades. I'm very tempted for the J70, but I got a Hornby J36 in LNER Apple Green with BR lettering pre-orderd hopefully it arrives before Christmas. Great news, especially Rapido with your new replacement 15xx 👍👍

Hi Sam. I wish Rapido would advertise their OO-scale line in the U.S./Canada market, and also advertise their HO-scale offerings in the U.K. market, as some people I know over there (I’m not going to name names, you know who you are) DO occasionally review HO-scale engines and rolling stock on KZitem. There’s an especially nice-looking GP-40/powered-slug set decorated in KATY livery featured in the November 2023 issue of Model Railroader (inside front cover.) Yes, that’s right, folks. They’re saying it’s a powered slug, not an unpowered dummy! I’m sorely tempted to buy it, but my budget for this month is already spoken for. 😢 Were it to (ahem) appear on Sam’s layout, I’d love to see a review of it, because I know Sam will nit-pick it if there are obvious flaws such as uneven paint, glue blobs, or detail parts that came off or are broken. 😮 That being said, this is definitely going to be on the pricey side!

Same here, I also think it’s funny seeing Hornby and Sam getting excited about new details such as fire box glow, metal reverser rod, metal safety valves, metal whistle ect these are all on my hornby 8f r-325 that according from the paperwork is from 1990. I really don’t think Hornby and other manufacturers need to keep ramping up the cost of these locos because they added a 1p led to the loco for firebox glow ect it just comes down to pure greed, hidden behind “re tooled” or “updated” a large loco costing £250 is insanity, 21 years ago I was buying large super detail locos for about £50 you can’t say that increase is inflation, accounting for inflation £50 in 2003 in 2023 would be £79.53 not £250

I wonder if you had the same problem I found - Dapol adopted RP25 wheel standards, which are very good - USA standard in fact, but require either compensated suspension or perfectly dead level track if they are to run successfully in rigid 10 foot wheelbase wagon chassis. Similarly their 6-wheels milk tanks would 'strand' the centre axle on the odd minor hump, lifting one or other outer wheels off the track. Track does tend to expand and contract over time, and fitting compensated suspension is a major job on a one piece moulded chassis.... I replaced them with Bachmann or Hornby wheels. Modern Hornby wagon wheels, by the way, are slightly under gauge for use on Peco track, and derail rather too readily - they need tapping outwards slightly, using a back to back gauge to solve that problem.

I would like to start a small collection of the very best OO scale steam locomotives for static display only (not kits). Living in the U.S. it would be folly to attempt a full layout in OO. Hi Sam, the hobby is certainly exciting with so much rtr to choose from. It is, however, getting pretty expensive and I feel for those who cannot enter the hobby unless buying pre-owned & older stock. While this isn't necessarily a bad thing of course, and some models are still great (just paid full retailer price for a 'new' old Bachmann 4575 which is becoming a favourite), it's good to get the latest tooling. Glad Rapido are taking quality issues seriously. I have just cancelled one of my pre-order 44xx prairies as I don't want double trouble considering all the negative reviews I've seen for the 15xx (which I also decided not to buy). I'll take my chances on missing out on one of my choices if the remaining one arrives in the excellent quality & condition their rolling stock has (& hoping the pre order wagons I have ordered are just as good). Dapol, Rapido & Accurascale are demonstrating to the likes of Hornby & Bachmann that new tooling, feature & innovation doesn't have to mean eye-watering prices - good on them! Cheers 🙏

Not had a big issue with dapol couplings, probably because I shorten them to get closer coupling. However I do have an issue with the wheels. I find the flanges are far too fine, and they are often not concentric. Regarding whether we want some features, or would prefer cheaper but more basic models to be fair to Hornby they also have the Railroad range. Some of the Railroad plus models are good value for money and a bit more robust, but for those who want added detail, diecast, firebox flicker, etc then you have the main range. So Hornby cater for both markets. I do think the prices for some of their main range are too much for my wallet, though still not as bad as Bachmann and the size of the discounts the model shops sometimes offer on old stock suggests they're making a substantial mark up. One thing I do object to is old tooled models being priced the same as newly tooled models with diecast and additional features. A good example is Hornby's 8f which is a very basic model that should really be in the Railroad range, being priced the same as the 9f , but without the diecast body, high detail, 21 pin decoder, firebox flicker, etc.

Agreed (that there are subtle differences), but Bachmann would (at that time) have had a great deal less to do (to produce the BR version), than Hornby have had, who presumably needed to start from scratch (so not even with the benefit of common chassis components, such as wheels, coupling rods, etc.). I like models that are sturdy and good runners, so die-cast and good mechanisms are much preferred. I remember Roco's models are often fairly hefty, but they also often lack much of a cab interior (at least in HOe, anyway).

This spooky video you speak of. It wouldn't per chance be a compilation of my scary ghost train requests, would it? I'd like to see that in any case.

Part of me hopes Hattons does another run of their Genesis coaches in Southern Railway green. Especially now they are doing another run on their SECR P class

Though I agree with the thought of shopping online, it's the lack of scale indicator that prevents me from wanting to use that feature of modern society because I'd need to see it in person to determine scale which is a bit of an inconvenience or am I the only one?

I have not been impressed with Hornby in recent years, they've been steadily raising prices, but their product has remained stagnant. When compared to the detail offered by both Rapido and Accurascale (though both seem to have some quality and engineering issues), Hornby's prices compare badly. However, it sounds like they are intending to step up their game, and that is to be applauded. For decades they've had the standard and lesser detailed railroad range, and quite frankly, I don't know why they don't offer their 10+ year old tooling examples under the railroad banner, and give those looking for the more detailed (and expensive) models what they're looking for too!

I think there is a place for cheap low end models ie pocket money models as there a place for expensive feature rich models as well.

Hmmm, I’m not sure this “touch to turn on/off” the lighting effects is a good idea, battery-wise, as it means some current must always be drawn from the battery to monitor the coil sensor, whereas the older design with the reed switch was much better; if it was off, then it really was off, so no mysteriously drained batteries.

They don’t run on batteries as far as I know - these are locomotives, so they draw power from the track!
