The absolute best side by side comparison between the two. I drove both and noticed the lowered height of the P. Great vid! My MYLR is going to be delivered in two weeks. Too early for your review, Tesla now offers a Acceleration Boost upgrade for the LR. That will be the first download after I take delivery. Increases the 0-60 time to 4.2 or 4.3 depending on which reviewer you follow. 4.2 is plenty fast for me. The extra range is too valuable to give up in exchange for the YP. Plus, my wife really disliked the Performance test ride as it was pretty stiff and rough on our 70ish bodies. Thanks again. Fun vid!

When I was test driving, I found the ride comfort to be very different in the driver's seat vs front passenger seat vs back seat, declining in quality in that order. I have test driven the MYLR19, MYLR20, and MYP and ended up ordering the MYLR19 for the ride comfort. I have a loop that goes around my community that has everything from straight smooth roads to bumpy roads, turns, railroad tracks, and potholes. IMO, when you're buying a family car, especially for a new family, the back seat ride needs to be smooth or the baby won't be sleeping ever. I love the look and power of the MYP and I had given thought to ordering it then adding the UP Luxury Coilover Suspension Kit, but didn't want to take a $10k leap of faith. On the rare chance the opportunity came up, I'd be interested in a back seat ride quality comparison between a stock MYLR19 and an MYP with the UP Luxury Coilover Suspension Kit.

Car looks super good. I’m now waiting for Tesla release $2k speed boost for the Y as they did for the M3. Also, $3k “discount” is not a discount, but a permanent price reduction. As for the one pedal driving, you gotta give it that little extra stop power to keep your rotors clean. Using the brakes only on rusty rotors will dramatically mess up your brake pads - I've seen some nasty hardly used rotors at the superchargers, you also won't stop as fast as you could in a emergency situation. Not exactly. As performance model also have a different type of rear motor (if memory serves me correctly) which is better for acceleration but likely less efficient. Looking at the performance version vs long range you have about 1.4 seconds in difference between them. But if you want the best of both worlds, I would suggest the long range model and then buy the $2k acceleration upgrade that reduce your 0-60 with 0.5 seconds. This should get you a bit closer to the acceleration of the performance model without paying the additional $10k for that model.

The regenerative braking system has nothing to do with the actual brakes and pads. The regen is not an actual brake, it’s a motor that runs in reverse based on the energy of the wheel spinning. My point being, the upgraded brakes DO matter. They actually provide the real stopping power you would need.

My opinion about the wheels: You may not notice as much difference between the ride between those 2 because of the wheels you chose for the LR. I test drove the LR with standard wheels and then the performance. There was a clear difference in the ride for me. I did not like the ride of the performance. Oddly, the difference in acceleration was not as subjectively apparent to me as the ride quality. The higher ground clearance is important to me for where I live. It does bug me that the better LED headlights are currently not available for the LR.

I don't see that the height is an issue with a bike rack on the back. I think I am going with the Long Range and wait a little. Thanks for the comparison between the two Model Y Tesla's. Amazing how much pickup and speeds these two cars have. Even though the "Performance" model has quicker off the line speed, I guess the top end of the "Performance" model is supposed to be 155 mph vs the "Long Range" model is 135 mph. Both models are very fast in my opinion. For me, the "Long Range" model would be ideal for me since I am retired and just do driving around town or short single charge trips. Any of you guys know which is faster, The "Performance" model Y or the Tesla Plaid S model. They both seem to have the same specs for speed. Not sure what you get with the Plaid S model to make it so expensive >100,000 dollars for it. Take care.

The Model Y LR makes the most sense because of the longer range, higher ground clearance important with our pothole filled roads, comfort, lower maintenance of tires, rims. The Model Y Performance tires last may be 15,000 miles, need to filed often; rims are susceptible to road rash and cracking which are expensive. Set of MYP tires cost $1,800. Model Y LR tires can last 40,000 miles.

Here’s what you’ll learn about ‘Long Range’ - (like I have) - you basically lose it after a year. My Model 3 Dual Motor Long Range was purchased as a 310 mile (TRIP charge) now has 15,000k miles and now just gets 293 miles. Doesn’t sound bad but the reality is, that the last 10-20 miles to ‘top off’ the electrons takes a LOT more time to charge. So, my point here is, after a year and a half, my M3 LR is basically at 270 (YES 270) miles (non TRIP (which is supposed to be 310) charge) - which before then would have taken the FULL time to charge to 310. Really sucks when you bought the car to go far but after a year it drastically changes on you charging time wise. Just drove from CA to Texas recently and will say, the premature battery 🔋 degradation makes a HUGE difference when it comes to your long distance charging options. - All of this said, if my DM LR M3 now has just 16k miles on it and has gone from the 310 I paid EXTRA for to 293 (FULL, TRIP charge) -- This May not sound like a big deal but the reality is, what happens is this type of battery degradation, especially SO soon, ends up making your DAILY, non-TRIP, NON-FULL 310 Charge, take just as long. Which is a huge problem because you end up only getting like 240-250 miles with the same amount of charge time you had originally with just the ‘Daily’ range charge - SUPER worried where I’m going to be at 25k, 50k, 75k and so on....

I just test drove the long range and imma say don’t sleep on speed 4.5 is a understatement , that all wheel drive is crazy and like he said it’s how the power put down , I like when it kicks in more after like 30 mph, it’s INSTANT power and torque , it makes you think compared to a regular car how much better it is to go electric, bruh engines is cool but you just know you rarely going to have problems 🔥 and what he said bouta glass u forget you have it lol

I believe he's referring to the $3000 price cut that Tesla had on the Model Y's a couple month ago

In NJ, the performance is 20k more because you don’t get the 5k NJ EV rebate.

Heck Yea I live in ny. I’m actually thinking it might be worth it to get a nj license and register w my brothers nj address to get the LR tax free and $5k rebate. It’s about a $7.5k savings. Am I crazy?!

Tbh unless the average person is told one's performance and the other isn't, they're not going to notice the difference. It's kinda funny because when I was testing performance vs long range I also noticed that the initial pick up felt similar but on performance it felt quicker on the top end. From what I've seen both versions have a very similar rolling 30-60 time.

The most amount range is most important for me on the "long range", who need even more performance with degrading batteries after a couple of years.

For (Non-Performance) Long Range, Dual Motor, you can get the $2,000 Performance Upgrade package to increase you 0-60 by a half second! You could also get lighter, yet, more aggressive looking wheels and higher performance tires to increase speed and still get an even more positive bump omg range!

Are you happy with the white exterior color? I hear Tesla has had difficulty matching the white color on the exterior panels. What do you know about the newer white Y’s color quality?

I wouldn’t say it’s Lexus or Mercedes quality paint work but it’s not bad. In different light you might be able to tell there is a slight difference between the panel that is plastic in the panel that is metal. You have to really look closely and the average person would never notice. In the past Tesla had a lot of problems with this but they have recently fixed the issue in the factory from what I can tell

Great comparison of the two models. I test drove a LR 3 several times before I got my Performance 3, and the differences are similar to what you show here. However, on the Model 3, you also get track mode, which unlocks the handling in way most do not expect. But, you have to stop and put the car in park to activate track mode. Once it's on, you loose ALL cruise control functionality, which is annoying. That being said, it really comes down to whether you want acceleration and handling improvements, or lower cost, longer range, and more comfort. It's a really great and simple way that Tesla has packaged the two versions. That being said, I really wish they'd offer 18" or 19" wheels on the Performance 3, and 19" or 20" wheels on the Performance Y.

The small amount of extra range is a non-factor. All you get for just 4k more, for the Performance, is a major factor. You spent 2k more to go faster and it is still much slower. You also paid more for those wheels, not to mention dropping your Y to look more like the performance. So you spent more money than if you just bought the performance and at the end of the day. Its still sub-par to the Performance and worth less.

Great review! Do you have experience with the acceleration upgrade for the long range version? How does it compare to the performance? Does it reduce the reach?

I've driven a Y with it and you can tell a difference but it's minor. I personally don't think it's worth it but that's up to you. Very cool software can make your car faster

Just checked the range different of them two today and there’s only a 15 mile difference. Don’t think I’d go for the LR if I was just looking for range, rather have the performance

It's pretty interesting how much importance is placed on looks, like sure, the 19's have a better ride, but the 21's just look so much better. When I drive the car, it's more about the ride than looks. Believe me, I've been down the looks rabbit hole. I had the lowered civic with rolled fenders, low profile tires like rubber bands, headers, cold air intake, electronic valve timing control, short shifter, at least 75 additional psychological horsepower. Then I got wise, and realized all this stuff only got my 0-60 about 1/2 second quicker. OK, time for some real power. Installed the Jackson Supercharger, and had some real power. I could have ripped off the headers, intake, etc, but now I had a fast car that looked cool under the hood. Then the epiphany: to go faster, get a faster car. Several V6 Acuras later, I got a Performance Model 3, loved the 20 inch wheels, but potholes forced me to get the stealth. 0-60 in a little over 3 seconds will rearrange my anatomy. It cured being deprived of horsepower as a kid. 2018, 4 years, no problems, no gas, no service, just electrons and wiper fluid. I'd really like some 20's with red calipers, but the 20s would pop every week in this area. It looks like your average model 3, but it has track mode, and the Performance Ys assume it's pretty average. A performance Y with increased range is really tempting. Watching what's coming out of Austin and Berlin.

Great review of both. I almost ordered a LR but man the numbers on the Performance just make it worth. Just need lighter wheels for more range.
