Really enjoyed the tour, and the drive. Your candor is both charming and refreshing. Obviously you're a guy who figures things out, and can think outside of the box. Thanks for sharing! Keep us in the loop!

Thank you!!! I remember the days when aftermarket AC for cars was a big deal. There was one in my home town. Those guys are long since gone, but I wonder what they used to do with 6 volt cars. I know the early lux cars like Cads and Imperials, etc had 6 volt air c. Also, I can still get 6 volt blower motors. I have a 53 Plymouth and did not change over to 12 volts. I would sure like to get ac. It gets really hot down here in Louisiana and it is not fun driving it when it is so hot. Thanks again for defying the experts. By the way 40 degrees coming out is about as good as it gets on normal AC in cars.

One thing on the system I would consider changing, a compressor with a greater displacement such as a sanden 4664. I think that would help it cool better at idle, since the old flatheads idle quite low. No time to mess with it now, but it would bolt right in.

Good call on the mechanical fan. Great job. Thanks for the encouragement-I will doing something similar soon. BTW, fan motors don't care about 6 or 12 either. 6 volt motors just go faster.

Thanks! I had to step up the power to the blower motor since it would run too slow on 6 volts, and the 12 volt motor was my only option.

The car is so big, you could add another (large)evaporator in the rear (there are plenty of 6 volt fans you can use with those even if you need to make a custom housing for it, like you did for the dash vents.). You can still bolt an alternator to the car, just as you bolted the ac compressor. Leave the generator with his shaft, but unhook his wires. There is plenty of room. You could even switch to 12 volt and change your bulbs and put Runtz box for the electric gauges. I'd add a power steering pump I think. Probably with a remote mount reservoir. You maybe could use a power steering ram from a corvette or a RR silver cloud and attach it to the existing steering system. Would be better to put a recirculating ball steering box though. Thanks very much for this video. I need a/c because of my bad health and I was planning on putting the sanden compressor in my 37 packard with the clutch welded to the pulley and a POA valve to eliminate the need for a cycling switch. (that's the alternative way for 6 volt a/c, the first 6 volt ac cars didn't have clutches, you took the belt off in winter.) Now I don't have to do the welding part.

You could absolutely perfect that to make you cold on a 100 degree day without too much more work. (so long as the engine cooling system can handle it). I'd use r12 refrigerant, 525 refrigeration oil, eliminate the clutch cycling switch and fit a POA valve or STV valve, and put another larger evaporator in the rear or under the dash. I would use r12 and 525 refer oil because they are better but this system would work with 134 and ester too. If the condenser was a parallel type and large enough, you could still hang meat in there. Also sanden makes a larger compressor and they make one with an automatic variable displacement which would help on days that are not too hot and keep it from cycling off. Cheers and thanks very much for telling us all the 6 volt works on the clutch...

Thanks! I'm finished experimenting with it for now, since I've got too many projects going right now. Unfortunately the cooling system doesn't allow for much, but I bought a slightly later model engine, which is identical except for a more traditional water pump mounted on the front of the block. If the engine in the car ever has trouble, I would swap it and many problems I have now would be solved. I believe it really needs a 7 cylinder sanden style instead for better cooling at idle(for a greater displacement). The system doesn't work too bad though, I just drove it 60 miles yesterday! Thanks for the good info and suggestions!

This classic car air conditioning was kept basic and simple. No complicated air flow damper controls and just a single speed on the fan. Also if this system needs repairs it is easy to get at everything to repair it. The modern car I drive is incredibly complicated on the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system. My car has like many cars today a full automatic climate control system. Also if the air conditioner evaporator or heater core should leak and need replacing it costs thousands of dollars because the entire dash board must be removed. There are a lot of times when simpler is better.

Amazing. Car runs real quiet for its age. I have a 1948 Packard here in Florida, too. It is hot driving most of the year. I have a friend that converted his Packard to 12 volt to get AC. You must be very mechanically talented to do this. Good job.

Sounds like a neat project! Might consider a greater displacement compressor, like a sanden 4664. I think it may make the vent temps cooler at idle, but its just a theory.

May I ask a question? Is it been a while since you installed it? How long has it been working? Have you had any problems with it? Thank you. I’m considering putting one in my 52 Studebaker.

I think its been 2 years now, and it works just the same. The only thing I would try different would be a greater displacement compressor for colder ac at idle. It really just comes down to the effort you put into making it work like your belt arrangement. Good luck!

This is perfect 👍 I want to add AC to my 54 Hudson and have an old era correct novi system that went in the trunk. So as far as parts needed it’s the compressor, air dryer, condenser and evaporator and expansion valve?
@rustyoldchevy1149

That sounds like a good start, dont forget to somehow improve airflow over the radiator/condenser. You could build a fan shroud, or add a 6 volt alternator with 6 volt cooling fans. Also the heat generated from the condenser will preheat the air to the radiator so it will run warmer. Lastly, the compressor I have works fine, but I've wondered if a larger displacement compressor (sanden 4664) would make the vent temps colder at idle since the flatheads idle quite low. (just a theory, not tested)

The ac compressor came from advance auto parts, part number T58551. Everything else was pretty much custom made. Any universal under dash unit will work with a "digiten dc 6volt to 12volt 10amp step up converter" to run the blower motor. Also, the bigger the better for the condenser with plenty of air flow.
