Like most people I only knew about this band from their obvious hit, "Melt with you." But during my deployment in Operation Desert Storm in 1990, I decided out of boredom to give the entire cassette a listen and what a shock to me that the entire "After the Snow" effort was as great as it was. Very thoughtful and nice harmonies.

After the Snow is an amazing album, but Ricochet Days is possibly the most under rated album of all time. It's fantastic I saw them play live and they played a ton of songs from Ricochet Days and hardly anyone recognized the songs from that album. I was in heaven though.

I've been into Modern English since 1983 ( upon first hearing their "obvious hit"- which needs no mention here; since it's basically become their "signature song"- on my "recently discovered" BELOVED college radio station as a 13 year old kid... ) And since my college radio didn't have to conform to any fucking "format" ( like "traditional radio stations" did ) they could basically play whatever other tracks from these BRILLIANT bands albums that they felt like, therefore exposing me to plenty of their EPIC music repertoire such as this song right here. I'm so glad Modern English are still putting out upcoming new material such as "1234". Also, Robbie Grey was fucking GORGEOUS back in the day!!!... I kinda already knew this back then, but looking back to "40 years ago" is great to be reminded!!!...

Anyone else notice that all the greatest bands and songs are usually the ones that never received huge acclaim. The general public never have the ear for true masterpieces, its left to us music nerds to appreciate, even though thats not great for the musicians pocket books, maybe it's for the best. At least us music hipsters can boast about our superior music taste.

Someone's Calling Modern English turning 'round as if in flight I sense your breath cut like a knife a thousand shadows all in pain what they feel (fear?) must be the same the tension's mounting with the tide I see the heat rise to the sky I search the faces for a clue a thousand hate(s), some laughter too the flames were dancing as the people shouted the streets they were alive as the stage was mounted a thousand cries of jubilation from the throes of this great people's nation and as our bridges burned to dust a useless theme was quite enough I felt as you, one with the night someone's calling in the night I start to think, I start to cry the choice is always mine but I'm too scared to judge but I'm too scared to judge turning 'round as if in flight I sense your breath cut like a knife a thousand shadows all in pain what they feel must be the same someone's calling in the night someone's calling in the night someone's calling in the night someone's calling in the night

Most lyrics on the internet and Spotify are created using AI and transposing of voice to text which is not 100% accurate. I found the correct lyrics right from their performance at this radio station where you can hear Robbie Grey vividly. Here is the video and correct lyrics below - Turning around as if in fright I sense your breath cut like a knife A thousand shadows all in pain What they fear must be the same The tensions are mounting with the tide I see the heat rise to the sky I searched the faces for a clue A thousand hate some laughter too The flames were dancing as the people shouted The streets they were alive as the stage was mounted A thousand cries of jubilation From the thrones of this great peoples nation And as our bridges burned to dust A useless feeling was quite enough I felt your chill run with the night Someone’s calling in the night I stop to think I stop to cry The choice is always mine But I’m too scared to judge Turning round as if in fright I sense your breath cut like a knife A thousand shadows all in pain What they feel must be the same Someone’s calling in the night kzitem.info/news/bejne/mZp616urbouIl3Ysi=XfKSRriR1YCXL2Ke

The band cut up the original song and re-edited it for this video...it's not exactly the same as on the album. On the orignial, there's a short break in the middle, the drums and guitar stop, there's just synth...and then it all picks up again with a rush of energy. Too bad they didn't highlight that here.

a song is rarely (if ever) altered to support a video... the explanation for the diff between an edit vs an album version is the SINGLE EDIT; usually, the version on the album was too long for commercial airplay (and thus had to be shortened) and/or someone thought the song could be made more 'commercial' through editing... the video is then made to support the song (whether that be the the album version, a shorter radio version, or even an extended dance/club version)...
