An old timer taught me a great trick… 40# roofing felt above the initial level/pitched backfill and wrapped up the wall… think flashing. THEN back fill with your topsoil (Garden) or last layer of soil/stone/mulch. It will ensure that water will NOT go down along the foundation and helps hold moisture in the garden soil layer! Two-for. In the Northern US, our exterior doors must open inward, because if not, we'll get blocked into the house when we get a heavy snowfall. You literally would not be able to open the door when a few feet of snow is on the other side.

In Canada (or at least in BC), the swing direction is determined from when you're standing outside the room/house. So in this case, you would stand on the outside of the screened-in porch and look at the door, and since the hinges are on the right, it would be considered a right-hand hung door. Or, more specifically, a right-hand reverse hung door, because the door swings out. Cool how it's different depending on where you are!
@DeCSSData
6 ай бұрын
In Germany that would be a right door too. But we determine it from the side which it opens to wherever it is. So there is no 'reverse' or thing like that. You go on the side where the door swings to (you have to pull it to you). And from there you look where it is hung. So this door is a right one. With this method there is no thing like inward, ouward, reverse or whatever. There are just left and right doors. You get the right one if you just watch it from that side you want it to open to...
@Topcat505

In the states, it would also be called a right hand reverse.

Hey guys, still enjoying watching you build. Just wanted to pass along some feedback, Kerdi shower products failing is the number one problem I have been seeing on jobs that are about 1-4 years old. The failure isn’t usually the installers fault but instead is the kerdi sealing strips lifting and separating causing leaks that require complete replacement. Good luck getting the company to reimburse as that requires admitting they’ve got a problem with their products. Just something I thought I’d pass along for you guys to keep an eye on and ask around about. The failures are prevalent everywhere in the Ohio Valley area where I work and I’d imagine that it’s everywhere else also. Cheers guys.

Hey Eric, Door handing is always referenced from the key side or outside. That patio door is a Right Hand Reverse (RHR) which is also the same as LH in terms of swing but if there was a lock then the reference side for the key makes it a RHR door. I believe that door swing you could consider it left-hand LH for the hinges install perspective, but it would really be right hand reverse RHR. From a door hardware perspective you consider door swings from the secure side of the door. So it’s swinging on your right as you come from the locked side of the door, but you pull it to you, so it would be right hand reverse RHR.

No. No professional tile guy is going to use red guard over kerdi. Bad idea. Waste of resources and time and every warranty is voided. If you want a problem with Kerdi then use red guard over it. The entire point of kerdi is to let it get wet and then let it dry out. Additionally a true tile guy is not going to be using red guard. Probably laticrete instead.

No no! Never use red guard over Schulter membrane!!! Schulter is good but problem is later the red guard releasing from from the Schulter. It will eventually not bond to each other. There for the tile will be hanging there and eventually falling of the wall.

Not sure if you wanted exterior colors - let me know I used mostly Sherwin Williams paints. Had to use a Valspar paint in the Queen suite Vanilla Steam b/c they didn’t have the satin in SW when I went to get it. Queen Suite is satin and the rest of the interior is Eggshell. I am using satin April Rain between the kitchen countertops and cabinets instead of doing a tile backsplash. Though I have something to go between the exhaust hood and countertop that’s a little different.

We never liked the Schluter "Ditra" system. We used it on a couple of jobs (wasn't our choice). We thought the Hardibacker was actually easier, and you can snap chalk lines on it, which you can't really do on Ditra (chalk doesn't stick too well on Ditra). It also takes longer to set the tile on the Ditra, and takes more thinset, since you have to fill all those little waffle squares first. As for a shower pan, I still think the best method is a mortar bed with the Otay liner. It's just not that hard to do.
