This residential project, conceived as a modern case study house, explores new possibilities for customised homes in the well-established suburbs of Los Angeles. The 3,600 square-foot residence, situated on a 15-by-36-metre plot, tackles the challenge of providing natural light, capturing prevailing breezes, and creating inviting outdoor spaces while maintaining a high-quality interior experience and privacy. With five bedrooms and three bathrooms, the ground floor features an open plan including the kitchen, dining areas, and living/family rooms, as well as a 500-square-foot single garage.
The design prioritises the seamless integration of indoor and outdoor spaces, ensuring the owners' privacy. Technologies and materials were chosen to support this integration, such as a slab foundation and large sliding doors that connect the great room to the patio. From the kitchen, the heart of the home, the entire width and length of the property can be seen, highlighting the importance of the visual and physical connection between indoor spaces and the exterior environment.
The building's solar orientation was carefully planned to maximise energy efficiency. Strategically positioned glass doors, skylights, and windows in the circulation corridors ensure natural light during the day. A two-story atrium serves as a light well for the family room, rear entry, and master suite. The design minimises the number of openings in the external walls to maintain insulation integrity, with eaves protecting the openings on the east and west facades.
The project also aims to create a tranquil, comfortable, and private sanctuary, qualities not always associated with modernism. Each space in the house offers framed views or access to the outdoors, such as the central two-story atrium that showcases a 30-year-old Japanese black pine, a beautiful natural sculpture. The front garden is planted with a textured mix of ornamental grasses and olive trees, while the backyard features a well-manicured lawn. The design achieves a calming effect through the rigorous dimensioning and sequencing of the interior spaces, resulting in simultaneous experiences of openness and intimacy, essential for creating a sanctuary.
