Another problem with the rock genre is that most bands keep trying to revive what worked in the past. No one's really pushing the genre forward or doing anything groundbreaking with it nowadays.

Is that always necessary? What's wrong with doing what works? Like, we all say we want new and original ideas, but we don't really mean it. To give a non-rock example, Lorde's Melodrama is one of the most unique pop albums in recent memory yet it sold in America about as well as Terminator Genisys. We'll get new and original ideas when we start buying them.

Reasons why rock continues losing: 1) gatekeeping. Earlier today I saw a video where this guy was complaining about people like Rihanna who *obviously* don't listen to rock music wearing shirts from metal and hard rock bands. Meanwhile if Rihanna saw some metal dude wearing one of her shirts she'd probably thank him for the promo. 2) Too many people wanting the next Beatles/Led Zepplin/Nirvana. Nobody in hip hop is asking for or trying to be the next Biggie or Tupac, they push things forward instead of looking backwards. 3) lack of presence on social media. Music's biggest stars are also social media's biggest stars. You don't see many/any rock stars on social media the way you see hip hop or pop stars. 4) lack of diversity. Like it or not, rock is still very much considered to be "white people music" while hip hop and pop are considered to be for everyone. 5) snobbery. You might think that rock is the pinnacle of musical human achievement but that's the type of attitude that puts off a lot of potential fans. I can say personally that I never gave classic rock a chance because I thought the fans were a bunch of elitists who never gave other forms of music a chance. I know I'm missing something because I'm hopped up on Benadryl right now, but just putting that out there.

ladydontekno *claps* You're so right! I think people also are drawn more to the lifestyle of rappers, DJ's and hip-hop artists. Like ARTV said, rockstars aren't that charismatic enough now. They get older, and people want a lifestyle with big cars and women around them, just like rappers (I'm being very stereotypizing them here but you know what I'm saying) The rockstar image has gotten old. We really need a band that could reinvent rock and show us a new interesting lifestyle. I also agree with the first one, I've seen many people wearing shirts from Nirvana and Guns 'n Roses, while some of them have never even heard their songs. Or they like Smells like teen Spirit, so they think they can identify as Nirvana fans

Not sure about the 'hip-hop' music is for everyone bit. The huge majority of rappers are black. Many of them over use the n-word which gives me the impression white people are not their target audience. I think you think pop and hip-hop is 'everyone' just because it is popular at the moment. Rock'n'roll was introduced to the western world by the black community btw. Despite this, I do agree with a lot of what you are saying.

The only way rock is going to get revitalized is if an act can put the genre's past on the back burner long enough to figure out what people want TODAY and what they are lacking TODAY. Yes, rock has a rich history that shouldn't be forgotten, but it only got that way in the first place by bands figuring out what its contemporaries wanted and needed to hear. Hate to break it, but music is a product before it's art. If you can't sell it, you've got nothing.

". I just don't get how alternative rock in general went from grunge in the 90s to the modern rock songs today." I've asked myself this. And bands today were influenced by the success of Coldplay, Fall Out Boy, Panic At the Disco and a few others I can't think of right now. So in the future we can look forward to bands influenced by Imagine Dragons.

It's weird how you're saying 2004-2009 was the time for variety on the charts... I think it was exactly in the mid-2000s when rock began to do worse on the charts, and rock bands also started to become more boring. The same thing with hip hop actually. Think of Soulja Boy's Crank That (2007), i will always remember that fucking song as the first god awful hip hop tune to hit it really big. Both rock and hip hop as well as plenty of other genres actually blossomed in the 90s. Think about it. 1. First you had the grunge explosion in the USA. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains... 2. At the same time UK had their britpop bands Oasis, Blur, The Verve... 3. Alternative rock was also very popular with groups like RHCP, No Doubt and Foo Fighters getting huge. Oh and don't forget about the punk revival with Green Day and Offspring. 4. Hip hop was peaking through the whole decade. You had Public Enemy, Beastie Boys, Dr. Dre and Outkast just to name a few. 5. Genres like funk and reggae had some popularity too with the likes of Jamiroquai and Shaggy on the charts. 6. Electronica was really starting to get big with groups such as The Prodigy and Chemical Brothers. 7. There was some actually great pop like Michael Jackson. 8. I don't listen to country (as i do all of the above) but i guess it wasn't doing too bad either. Shania Twain? So there you see 90s was REALLY the most diverse time in music, by far. I mean that's pretty hard to top right?

I'm hoping and waiting for rock to return to the charts. Unfortunately, the reality is that most rock fans aren't listening to music in a way that lets them easily cross over. Hip-hop is MASSIVE on streaming platforms. Rock and other genres need more streaming numbers to break through. I'm getting extremely sick of the charts being teeny bopper pop and Trap High Hat Song #564. The mainstream of most genres I find quite uninteresting most of the time. In general, I just want more variety and more melodic music. Country, rock, pop, and hip-hop in the mainstream right now place FAR too much emphasis on beats. Whatever. The bandwagon trend has happened for awhile. An artist makes a hit and then all the labels try to quickly mimic that hit. Now major labels have three or four acts that they promote each and their business model says to sell to young females and white guys that are into hip hop and country. Those labels are going to run those genres into the ground and meanwhile they aren't letting new acts in by using promotion money to fill up all the outlets where they can promote their stuff.

The top streamed genre of music on Spotify is metal. Rock is still the number one genre where music is still bought. I believe that what has happened is the internet has turned everyone into hipsters. When it comes to new music, people are listening to their own obscure acts. Pop no longer means popular. The number one song this week has 56,000 units sold and still beat Taylor Swift's new song after one or two weeks on the charts. Jay-Z, Lana Del Rey, Lady Gaga, Lorde and Katy Perry all released albums this year and after a couple weeks those albums either dropped off the Top 200 completely or were way down on the list. I believe in 5 years there will be no music stars, but there will still be obscure acts such as Beth Hart who is worth $2 million and Joe Bonamassa who is worth $10 million

People keep calling for a rock revolution like what Nirvana did, but the truth is the people calling for that don't actually know what they or the people in the mainstream want, and the reason for that is that most sounds in rock music have already been tried, and the ones that haven't are the experimental, obscure genres that would never stand a chance of crossing over. Meanwhile you look at hip-hop and, whilst people like to characterise it as all being the same trap garbage, it hasn't actually been that way for that long. It was only 3 years ago that everyone was on the DJ Mustard sound, and only 3 or 4 years before that was the bling era. Hip-hop still has a lot of room to grow and expand (consider that grime hasn't crossed over to the U.S. yet, when it does there'll be a whole new wave of sounds and artists), whereas rock, at least to the average listener, is kind of passé. I mean I like that Portugal The Man song that's in the Top 10, but can you really tell me it's a sound that fresh in rock music? It's run-off from the garage/indie sound which has been dominant for almost a decade now. There's a reason why Imagine Dragons and twenty one pilots are the most popular alternative bands right now by a wide margin, because they were able to embrace other genres and focus on a coherent pop sound in spite of it, rather than stubbornly sticking to the same sounds for diminishing returns like almost every other band on alternative radio is doing. If rock wants to survive, it needs to blend old with new, we can't just point at some random up-and-comer on rock radio and expect them to be the next Nirvana, because odds are the artist who is going to end up doing that, isn't on rock radio. That leads to how rock artists also tend to suck at promoting themselves on streaming services, but that's a whole other discussion. Point being, rock needs to embrace and experiment with other genres whilst keeping it's core ideals close if it wants to be relevant again.

nick supreme Hate to say it dude, but you're kinda proving my point. By sticking to these rigid definitions we don't give artists the room to breathe and actually experiment with new sounds, rather we insist on gatekeeping and trying to keep the genre pure, only to then turn around and ask "Why isn't anyone making rock music?" It's because the audience has such a idealised view of what rock should be that anything that challenges that view gets shunned and shouted down with some No True Scotsman bs. Plus by that logic Imagine Dragons and 21 Pilots aren't rock, but Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes would be, right?

Honestly if anyone has crossover potential it's Post Malone. Dude knows a ton about music and loves all genres of it, and he has some acoustic and rockier songs that he plays at his live shows. He even plays the guitar. Seriously this guy's a music aficionado, and if he ever decides to go the rock route, people will eat that shit up. And he'll do it. Mark my words. Being the aficionado he is, he's going to want to experiment and try different things. I just can't wait till he finally makes a good rock song and people realize it's a fucking awesome genre and start exploring. I honestly do think he has the potential to, with one album, do the same as Nirvana did in the 90's. Especially in today's political and social climate. Till then though, I'm just gonna keep enjoying his already great music.

I think rock has split off into so many subgenres that there's not that many good bands left playing just straight-up rock. Every rock band fits into some niche little subgenre, like alternative, indie rock, pop punk, metal, etc... Yeah, there are lots of great bands today that have roots in rock, but it's hard to call most of them rock.

The thing is that rock isn't gone, it's just different. You've got bands out there like Royal Blood and Fever 333 absolutely killing it, although such bands no longer seem to be in the mainstream. What I think that many people miss, and please correct me if I am wrong, is the sound of bands from the late nineties and early 2000s, when soaring, ethereal, emotional melodies, and melancholic hooks were often encountered. Modern rock seems to be more focused on being upbeat and on guitar bends and pentatonics. I respect and enjoy such music, but I honestly miss feeling like the emotionality of that time was accepted by the industry. Does anyone here share my views? Do you have different opinions? I'd be very interested in hearing them.

I think a lot of it has to marketing. Modern rock bands real aren't that marketed to mainstream audiences, but I think it's cause a lot of them seem to take themselves too seriously and play on radio rock trends that were popular in the mid 2000's. It frustrates me that when I play Sirius Octane every now again, they throw sometimes a #BringRockBack (paraphrasing), yet they play bands that sound like Breaking Benjamin wannabes or they stick with trends that aren't fun to listen to anymore that's frustrating. Then you notice the party mentality of modern day rap and I feel like rock would have to play in that field more in order to gain exposure. But a lot of them don't want to have that party mindset (for good reason) but they still wind up living in the shadow of post grunge bands that got some radio play a decade ago. Basically, if rock wants to be relevant, I think it would have to follow mainstream trends that the popular genres are.

There's an amazing amount of great new metal and hard rock bands that you've never heard of, there's just no way of exposing people to it like there used to be in the past. Beyond that, learning to play an instrument is too hard for a generation that sees easy paths to fame and fortune, like pushing play, or being an 'influencer', you don't even have to have a reality show on tv anymore. Music in general is in crisis, kids only see music as background noise, people who stream music are lazy and don't give a crap about it anyway. Check out the lineup for Coachella, people are going line up to spend 2 days in the desert to see some guy mumbling to pre recorded tracks, autotuned 'singers' and a couple of really 'Tame' 'rock' bands???? Theres some really cool rock stuff going on in Japan.....Band Maid, PassCode, Maximum the Hormone.

Foo Fighters and Stone Sour have done a hell of a job on their new albums. Personally I see it as people only want to listen to mundane Rap and pop music these days because of the "don't give a fuck" mentality that is around along with the desires to only feel pleasurable feelings in life. The clubbing lifestyle also doesn't help much and the issue with media like MTV only promoting music that they can control, hence why pop music is just massacred all other genres including hip hop which is really hard to distinguish these days. The way rock music will make it back into the mainstream is if media outlets will promote it a lot more because there has been proof that with the right amount of exposure there will be a lot more ears and eyes on the product. A tragic example is the death of my favorite singer Chester Bennington with Linkin Park when the news broke it was everywhere and as a result most of their albums charted again from all the streams and album buys. If there was that much exposure but in a positive manner for rock bands then the same can potentially happen.

The playlist consisted of Green Day, Sum 41, The Killers, Taking Back Sunday. Like u said Jon, this society just wants music to hype themselves up. Rock has that potential. The pretty reckless in my opinion need to go back to their hard rock roots to help in bringing back rock. I mean real rock. Not corporate garbage. But more importantly the band dorothy. They rock so hard (not metal but hard rock) and have blues /blues rock style as well which is important since rock is just harder blues in its more raw form. The 2020s needs to have a decade defining rock band/act. I mean, the 1950s had Elvis, the 1960s had The Beatles, the 1970s had Queen, the 1980s had Journey, the 1990s had Nirvana, and the 2000s had Linkin Park. I agree with you--I think it was characteristically stupid of Brandon Flowers to phrase his opinion like that, and narrow down the waning popularity of rock to one thing. He's tried to save face a little, saying things like (this is paraphrased), "I don't think all of rock is bad. I like some acts out there. We started in a time when there was no Internet, just word-of-mouth, and I think the Internet has made it so much more difficult to make yourself heard." But still...he has to concede that listener tastes have changed too. He might not be able to see that from where he's sitting, because he's still selling out arenas and stadiums, but it's the truth. The Killers, if they're ever going to pass on the torch, need to get their shit together and start collaborating, because even though I loved Wonderful Wonderful, the lack of guitar showed just how uninvested Dave was from production and it came out more pop than rock.
@gabbydourado

Kristin Gonterman I agree so much with you. Wonderful Wonderful sounded like The Killers are "Coldplaying". I remember when I listened to it for the first time and I was like "Who does Brandon Flowers think he is to tell other bands are not good enough if his band sound like a crap pop?" Sounded like 1000 synths vs. 1 guitar. To make good rock music people need good rock inspiration. And on this album The Killers sounded no rock inspirational (and inspired) AT ALL.

My favorite Artist is Frank Turner. He has such a great personality... but also a rather punky aditude. His albums are all very rock-driven but even he is doing something more electric on his next release. Actually I'm all right with that. But it feels like every rock band slowly turns away from rock which is so sad. And the fact that mainstream music goes away from rock sounds makes the music so much worse and monoton. I recently watched a video about that. The modern music uses so much less chord variety which makes every pop song sound kind of the same with slight variation. People just like the familiar things. If something sounds familiar in the end it people will like it. Even though it's basically just the last song with one changed chord.

My question to you, coming as it is from an older guy to a younger guy, is: does it have to be reflected in the charts? Does rock music need chart success to be considred relevant? In my experience, the main stay of rock has never been chart success. If you look back at classic rock and metal, and even alternative acts, sure they may have had chart toppers now and then, but for the most part, that's not what made them big and famous and classic. So why does it have to be now?

Another thing is that the leaders in rock music publicity are... disappointing people, are fake rock, or they aren't taken seriously. The two that come to mind are Fall Out Boy (fake rock) and Imagine Dragons (aren't taken seriously anymore). Yet both are disappointing people. The people who have the opportunity to hold the torch just aren't doing it when acts like Nothing More and Waterparks could. However, I still feel that veterans still have stuff in them. I know ARTV felt that Foo Fighter's last album was dull but I enjoyed it. Not their best but I thought they achieved what they were aiming for, although it did sacrifice some of their known rock sound. And Coheed still have some fight in them. I can feel this next Coheed record being something that people were asking for. I knew that Color was going to be their own thing. While that record isn't going to be regarded as their best, they made some really memorable songs on that record. I just hope that veterans can hold their ground and new acts can make breakthroughs.

Major record labels are hesitant and have been for a while to sign rock bands, partially because of its drop in popularity, but also because it costs more to pay a full band, studio work is harder because you have a group that writes rather than just having a corporation that gets the songs written for the singer, the band's direction may not match with yours, etc. There's also definitely a sense of pretentiousness or fear of corporateness that hits most really talented musicians as well. Like it used to be that a band like Nirvana could take over the world but now the really great bands seem to be about staying artsy and on the fringes (Nirvana may be a bad example, given what being in the spotlight seemed to do to Kurt in those last years, but still, they were huge). It's also so easy to start your own label or go to a smaller label and just tour rather than jumping through music industry hoops and possibly getting screwed and ending up in debt to the label like saosin did. I mean bands like Brand New definitely could be the next huge rock band but they're so obsessed with being quiet and sensitive that they've fought fame at every career turn. They're still huge, but only with the hardcore fans that feel an obnoxious ownership of the band. Imagine if they put out videos and made albums on a more consistent basis. Maybe stuck with a major label to promote. No one is doing that anymore. And now brand new can scrape by making fringier songs and changing genres and doing no publicity because their hardcore fan base goes to every show and they own their own label so they keep most sales dollars. It's just more appealing to the quiet sensitive types. We have a generation of Brian Wilsons and no Lennon/McCartneys. I think it's partially from cultural changes and partially from the daunting music industry.

Another great topic Jon! Lets put things into perspective. It wasn't too long ago in 2012 when Fun, Gotye had Hot 100 number ones with The Lumineers also scoring a top 5 hit on the Hot 100 at that time. These songs largely Indie Rock sounding. The best album to represent a good rock album nowadays is The Hunting Party imo. Has everything a modern rock album should have. Scorching guitar solos, heavy drums, screams and a mixture of many different styles (including nu-metal). Also, the problem with rock is that its SO diverse, as in theres so many types of rock music. Pop, and hip hop, to me, is a little more basic and more linear in terms of style. I could name 20 different types of rock but probably only 5 of pop, for example. I may be wrong though, just a hypothesis :D

Probably off topic but I noticed that paramore's hard times was like #90 on the charts despite everyone saying that they loved the song....if rose colored boy doesn't make it to at least the top 20 I will lose faith in everything. I find it pretty fucking ridiculous that rap/hip hip is dominating with the shit they put out

I agree with Brandon tbh, The Killers being my favourite band of all time... I may be a bit biased and although rock is the only music I really listen to, there hasn’t really been any bands that have really gripped me since The Killers and I agree with everything Brandon Flowers has said in regards to Rock not being the same is it was when The Killers were really big. The Killers are also the best band I’ve seen live and you can really see the real 80’s rock coming out

Rock music sounded/felt dead as fuck to me by the late 2000's. Nothing has changed 4 years later.

I honestly think that Greta Van Fleet could be the band we've been looking for, especially considering how much they've been blowing up recently. Just last year they were selling $8 tickets to shows at tiny venues, and the other day they played at Coachella, so they have tons of momentum and could possibly inspire new bands to follow in their footsteps

AlwayzHilarious they just need to be more than just a Led Zeppelin rip-off, and if they do that, they’ll more than likely blow up.

New bands don't have the charismatic enigma like the mid 2000 bands had, my chemical romance, panic at the disco, the strokes, white stripes, the killers, billy talent, muse. Now we have trash like imagine dragons and bands that sound like the Lumineers.

Rock is doesnt always need badass riff guitar, at least if we have Acoustic Guitar, bass and good drum beat, we can produce great rock music. Lot of people this day miss understand about this. And one things this era of music arena, people love to produce Song for solo artist rather than bands, rock is not die but people miss understand about music.

Finally someone who doesn’t burn Brandon Flowers because of his comment. Lots of Killers haters (reviewers) got butthurt because of this. But the truth is that rock isn’t on the radio anymore and when was the last time that an anthem came from the rock genre?

The Reasons why rock n roll is lacking is because of the attitude. Nowadays kids dont want to be rebellious, they want to fit in! If they dont fit, they feel bad. Which was the complete opposite with rock n roll back in the day, remember when Guns n roses came out!? My parents seem the devil in Axl rose, they didnt Like my music bro, it was raw, full of attitude, it was the middle finger of the music industry, nowadays, rock bands want to stay safe, they dont want the controversy, and SPECIALLY they dont have the songs!!!! The good and excelente musicianship, nowadays rock bands use Like 2 chords and a Catchy/Imagine Dragons Hook. Guitars sound wacky, doesnt sounds dangerous, pffff I could go on and on but, you see my point.

People absolutely need to pay more attention to underground music because it's amazing. In my local scene for some reason it's very hard to get new people to start coming out to shows regardless if they have the time or not. But there are seriously hundreds of bands that are doing phenomenal things that deserve the attention. I mean everyone just go check out bands like All Them Witches, At The Drive-In, Captain, We're Sinking, Chon, Cloud Nothings, Fleece, Free Throw, Girlpool, Japandroids, Looming, Manchester Orchestra, Meat Wave, The Obsessives, Portkey, Prawn, Quiet Oaks, The Smith Street Band, Tera Melos, Turnover, Waxahatchee, Why? to name a few amazing bands that have all released really good shit this year. Most people probably don't even know these names. And that's sad. This is why I stick to my own little bubble of music, as in I don't really pay attention to the mainstream. All of this has so much potential. But there is a societal statement to be said about the state of what's popular.

I think Highly Suspect's usually good, but it's depressing how few bands like them there are, and without a REALLY good rock band leading the charge like there used to be, the whole of rock suffers.

Great think piece. As you said, we just got new albums from rock acts The Killers and Foo Fighters, but aren't they just playing to their established fan base at this point? Of course their albums debut big, because their fans all pick them up the first week. But they probably won't have staying power on the charts because that takes adding new fans. U2 is one of the biggest rock bands in the world. When their new album comes out next month, it will be a huge seller week one, but will likely plummet down the charts after that. You're right, it isn't the veteran acts that will save rock. We need a smaller, new act to break out big.

All the really talented rockers these days are playing metal because it's the clearest way to show off their abilities. Of course, Zeppelin, Queen, The Eagles, Deep Purple, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Fleetwood Mac, The Cult, Guns N' Roses, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and Faith No More could all probably shred if they really wanted to (and some of them did every so often) but they also knew enough restraint to focus entirely on making the song good. That mentality returning would be pretty welcome.

I saw someone comment this in an earlier comment on this video (Tristan de Robillard) and what he said was that it's not the rock music in general, it's the generation. I might comment this differently but if you had any rock band from the 2010s produce a song during either 90s or the 2000s, it would be surefire hit. But since we're in a generation that considers rock music to be an underground genre rather than a mainstream genre, there is not that many bands breaking out into the spotlight. I mean right now we could have so many great bands that could be considered future Rock N Roll Hall of Famers rather than radio-friendly pop and EDM music that will fall out of people's minds in 20 years.
