Excellent instruction...I've watched hundreds of videos on the modern forehand and this is the only one that really worked for me...I have so much more consistency and control now! Do you have instruction on the one handed backhand also?

I see in lessons today that closed stance, more traditional forehand is still being taught first before being introduced to open or semi-open stance where the forehand lags, the racket (sp checked) head drops and the butt head is pulled through first, and finish is in front with a small wiper motion... as all this is to much to remember for a beginner or young student.

Solid and good words on angular momentum but actually it's a "modern" forehand from 1990 (with exception of an Agassi). The first swing the student took is probably from 1970 without a loop. Also as people pointed out, Federer uses a grip closer to an eastern and Sharapova isn't a good example either since her swing is also more classical and flat. The hands would stay more connected in the modern swing on the unit turn and the stance is typically more open (it was maybe 20 degrees open) but that almost square stance is ok from the middle of the court where she is driving or attacking. Not that she didn't rotate her hips or allow the feet to move off the ground, which she should have done to allow angular momentum. In addition, the backswing would be lower (Rick Macci's "pat the dog" or as referred to here as the "table") which allows the racquet to drop (and cock) into the modern slot or Brian Gordon's flip (which some people call lag or wrist). But really Vic Braden started discussion on the forearm pre-stretch that Agassi developed and Gordon really popularized it (although hardly anyone knows him since he isn't a coach). Finally the contact point is rarely a foot ahead but typically maybe only a few inches in front or quite frequently behind/inside the front foot (between the feet).

Hey coach. Quick questions from another coach if we use this pattern to learn a forehand with a semi western grip It is teaching you to make contact with the ball with the string of the racket not all facing forward (stop video at 6:21 for me). this is proven when your helper then gos to hit the ball. next stop (7:03) you can see here that all the string, the face of the racket is open, not down at all. this is because your helping is a good tennis player and knows what shes doing but you can even tell on that first one she miss hits the ball a bit it might of even hit the net then she makes a correction from there. The mistake is after you look at the "mirror" or 12 oclock bring your arm down to about 4 or 5 oclock and pull your wrist back tip of the racket is facing away from you (towards your back) then come around and rotate and back your swing low to high and make contact with a nice flat face of the racket you swing and wrist angle to control the amount of topspin and forward power from there. never bring your racket under the ball as you show always make contact with a flack face, bend down if its low. just to pick one thing in the video

if the grip is eastern like Federer or del Porto the strings would face the net not the side fence which is more semi western

You guys are funny. Federer said in an interview that he does not even know what grip he uses. "what ever is comfortable" he said or words to that effect.. Rec players love to argue over his grip as if it makes a bit of difference.

Grip makes all the difference for me. Unless it's semi western or western, I don't follow thru or hit any topspin. I also noticed Natalie is hitting with a closed stance, I was taught to always use an open stance (see Feel Tennis forehand video)
@gotrice5

Grip makes a huge difference since it determines the area in which you comfortably hit. With Federer's grip, the most comfortable hitting area is way out in front hence why Fed whips his shots and his arm is always full extended. The most ideal shot is when the racquet is perpendicular to the ground and if you tried doing Federer's grip really close to your body, you'll feel a strain on your wrist. Change it to Nadal's grip and it'll feel fine. Also, when Federer's says "whatever is comfortable." Doesn't mean his grip is all over the place. "Comfortable" probably means, whatever feels like an eastern forehand or close to it. I've watched many of Federer's slow-motion forehand videos from other youtubers and his forehand is consistently an eastern forehand or extremely close to it. You won't always grab the racquet in the same spot, but it's going to be extremely close.

He definitely said at the atp tour finals one year cant remember which he was being interviewed by Mark Petchey or leif shiras and I remember being surprised he didn't know what grip he used. Its definitely more eastern most of the time but I occasionally seem to hit with semi western

First of all, Fed and Nadal hit a completely different forehand than Maria Sharapova. Secondly, while Nadal is a very strong semi-western, Fed is somewhere between an eastern and a semi-western. I think the best description of Fed's grip is "hybrid." Lastly, the guys keep the head of the racquet completely on the outside of the body. The racquet head does not come anywhere near breaking the plane of body during the backswing. Consequently, the guys hit a significantly shorter stroke. The women are coming around, but they're not there yet.

andreeontube not really, I learnt playing tennis with semi western grip and gradually went for the eastern as it gave me more easy power, better handling of low balls and an easier inside out forehand.
@Shankar-Bhaskar
7 жыл бұрын
andreeontube I agree, also the eastern is tougher to learn in my opinion and semi western is easier to hold the raquet with. Infact seni western is now the default grip of choice.
@Shankar-Bhaskar
7 жыл бұрын
andreeontube The only problem is controlling the shot with the eastern forehand grip. It is very tough. It takes a long time getting used to this grip, I switched to this grip a year back after playing with the semi western grip for 6 years. I still face great difficulty in controlling my forehand with the eastern grip, I lose points which I could easily win with the semi western grip as it increases your percentage of rally. I am trying to be patient but I am fast losing my patience as the number of unforced errors increase on the forehand side.
@Shankar-Bhaskar
7 жыл бұрын
andreeontube I was unable to end the rally by hitting a clean winner. Earlier, though I had a good percentage of keeping the ball in play but I found it difficult to finish the point.

Tony07UK That is a closed stance that you use. It has nearly nothing to do with the stroke, it just takes more time to engage force and is a lot more of a foreword momentum based stroke.
