As a trim carpenter. I’ve done this exact design plenty of times. Usually high end apartments in to 30th floor or above. It makes sense doing it where owners don’t spare any funds and want things done right. If you’re trying to do this yourself, don’t even think about getting anything less then lvl5 drywall install. And even then. Everything else must be on par. Especially framing. (Because Sheetrock guys typically don’t care, they’ll cover anything, and just flare with spackle. Personally I prefer modern trim but on top of drywall. If the house moves eventually, and it will, this trim will still look better

The flush trim on base I saw being done in 1998 in upscale houses in Venice, California. It’s not new and from another video you did there was flat blocking on the bottom plate between studs as a nailer. I would think you would need a good GC and crew: (Framer, drywaller, trim carpenter) to make it happen otherwise you’ll have a big wavey mess on your hand trying to flush up drywall and wood. Then you would probably want to mill the baseboard using 3 1/2” plus baseboard 5/8 or greater... and a 10’ greater top plate, just my thought? The casing is also an issue where you need the door jamb plumb and level, so you don’t have things tweaked and shaving this and that. I’ve seen recessed reveals done now around the jamb and the finish drywall. The groove is painted black to hide out of square wall(s). Thanks for sharing. Most people don’t have an eye for these finish details. So unless the house was $2M plus or you appreciate fine (woodwork) details I think it’s a dubious expenditure. I noticed on the trim there is a small rabbet 🐇 was that detail carried through to the casing?

As an architect, I appreciate the excellent craftsmanship demonstrated with the installation of this flush trim at the base of the walls. However, the effort raises a question about the purpose of trim. Traditionally wood trim at the base provided an attractive cover for transitions, and allowed minor movement in the finishes for expansion and contraction. . Is the only purpose to be a bumper to stand up to occasional kicks and contact with vacuum cleaner flor attachments?

As a finish carpenter, I have worked on a few homes with this trim package. It is very hard to do, and very technical. For example, if you have a long hallway, with wood floors, you have to understand that the floor could expand to the point where it contacts the framing. If that were to happen, the floor could buckle, or it could push your walls around, even a barring wall. That's a big no no. This is because the baseboard is attached to the framing, and there's no shoe molding. Meaning your floors are within 1/2 inch of your plates, without this trim package, that distance is typically at maximum 1 1/4 inches. Meaning, you better have some money if you're attempting this, hire the right carpenter.

@@shinnick22 it does well over time. Just the install is a real pain, working with the J bead. It's unforgiving, unlike normal trim. Things need to be perfect, or you get a build up of compound that sticks beyond the jamb or baseboard, and that's not how it's supposed to look. There's a whole book that could be written about all the tricks that help the install. And a whole bunch of well your house isn't pumb or square when addressing the problems that come up. It best the bead has support the entire length of the pieces. That's like trimming the job before you trim it.

@@shinnick22 one trick, custom door jambs. Wide enough to account for the house not being pumb. Can always float up to the jamb. Shim out the "J" bead to the jamb. @@Cubannerd right Scandinavian modern minimalism also derived from the need to conform to the birth of mass society because the elaborate and ornate mouldings and sculptures could not help but be executed thoroughly by the hands of well trained craftsmen and that's why these flamboyant details were deemed to be the possessions of the aristocrats and didn't seem to be aligned with modern mass society But now the price of those modern designers' works? 🤣 And also the modern minimal interior design usually requires a great deal of money, time, energy and very complicated details and very well trained workers as seen in this video What an irony 🤣

Maybe I see it wrong in the video but it looks like they are caulking the bottom of the base trim. I don’t think I would run a visible bead of caulk at the bottom of that flush trim; that’s going to be a pain to maintain in the future. It’s much better easier to paint if there is a slot there and you can slide masking dry masking paper right into the slot and a repaint job becomes a breeze. As a someone who previously worked as a painter, I say design for ease of future maintenance in everything you build, or somebody’s going to hate you.

Isn't this going to be a potential problem where all your caulking is going to split and show gaps...or maybe you used a superior caulk product? Pls let me know what kind of caulking you'd suggest for this kind of application. Exactly what I was thinking. We own a rental where the builder used plastic drywall corner trim to wrap the door jambs and wall together eliminating the need for trim -- theoretically. But as the doors got used, the vibrations caused cracking. The door needs to be isolated from a hard connection to the drywall so that it is free to wiggle a little without creating cracks in the wall. The traditional method of running drywall up to the jamb and covering with trim solves this problem. I'm waiting to see what 5 or 10 years will do to this house. Maybe it'll work, or maybe they'll be adding trim.

For some people asking for a little bit of explaining. I'm a builder that loves details and I'm not to his level but one day i hope to be. If not better. This is my interpretation and a response i did to someone saying he talked to much and didn't show how he installed the base It's just straight 1x boards nailed down. They used a laser to get the perfect height so that when they install the base it'll fit perfect. It all comes down to the flooring system as well. First they compact the ground several feet if it's soft by having the ground tested for how compact it is. Then a solid foundation and then back to the laser for a perfectly straight subflooring. All that so when you get to the finish you have perfect fitting. Of course there are ways to cheat in case of mess up that normal people wouldn't notice. If the floor is uneven you get a slightly taller trim and scribe the bottom to perfectly match the uneven floor but keeping the top untouched so that if the floor is uneven, the top will be perfectly straight. That's when the table saw comes into play to get that perfect width. You'd even be able to match the transitions like from tile to carpet or hardwood. It should fit like a glove. This was more a video showing what can be done. If you have detailed building skills you'd be able to see all the work and details and even how to surpass imperfections to make it look like there isn't any. I love his shows for that reason. I learn a lot just by seeing because I can pick up on details like these so I'm taught so much more than he says.
