A brief intro and delving into the pre-requisites for what I hope is a relatively easy way to grasp modes. This is an adaptation of how I teach modes to my students, without any feedback or months-long set-up....so let's see how it goes.
My basic approach to modes is:
1) the idea of "feeling" and why Greek nomenclature exists. Also understanding the major (Ionian) mode and the concept of intervals or scale degrees
2) the notion of modes as transformations on the major scale and the idea of modes as going from lighter to darker as we add flats. This ties into both the Greek notion of "feeling" as well as an introduction to the Circle of Fifths
3) how modes apply across the scale degrees and the idea of playing diatonically.
Initially, I thought that I would cover this in 20-30 minutes, which is how it works out in a 1:1 session with a student when I have built up the pre-requisites. But this is going to be a multi-part series. Let me know your questions and/or feedback.
Also, I found the Donald Duck and Pythagoras video I mention: • Pythagorean Mathmagic ...
