Maybe they did it on purpose? Ofcourse they did it on purpose, they have ears. But that doesn't mean it's good, just an artistic decision that completely fails in my opinion. I don't need pristine, I just need something to not sound terrible. And good job on your argument for them being one of the greatest in history because they're your favorite band, I've never seen a more solid argument.

To everyone saying he's accidentally out of tune, notice that when he plays the main riff, he's pressing the tremolo system on his bridge to deliberately put his guitar out of tune. His other parts in the song are in tune, so it's obviously something he's doing on purpose.

And I'm shocked of what you people write, 'cause I always thought that THIS is the way how the lead guitar should sound like. Even when I play it I try to bend the god damn notes to get that sound. I always though that it's some kind of digital detunning effect here, not chorus-like, more like Whammy detune, something like that.

Modest Mouse is somewhat considered a lowfi band, well at least at the beginning; That's part of the reason i liked their earlier works more, i loved the sound they made; once they went on to make more commercial music, their records sounded better on wax, but they kept that lowfi style in their live performances. I'm sure they could afford expensive audio engineers to tune their guitars and someone to mix Issac's voice to hid his lisp and make him sound better; but if i was into that i would probably be into ColdPlay(they don't suck just not my cup of tea) or kings of leon(they do suck); just different taste in music; this song in particular attracted lots of mainstream fans who wanted to hear that perfect sound from the studio, so that's the main reason most people on this page don't get it. Some people like distortion and dissidence in their musicand want it to sound like its a garage band.
@boring5718

I can relate so much. I prefer lowkey rock bands because of their different sound. I like bigger bands too, but these lower bands music just sounds more appealing to me. I'd like it if they stayed like this more, with a few simple instruments and no added sounds. That's it

Nice, its good to know there are people who want to hear analog music in a digital world. . . have you seen the pitchfork doc of the making of Lonesome Crowed West? @ElectricPhantom

I don't know why people are criticiziing this performance so much, I think it's a very pleasing live performance on different levels; the music is right on point and the instruments aren't off key, and his voice is even quirkier live. I fail to see what's wrong with the picture.

I feel like Modest Mouse didn't want to do this show. Something about their atmosphere while playing just says "shit, man. Things aren't all right right now" (and it would make sense - unexpected and sudden fame, no more Jeremiah [for a short while at least] and many other personal issues regarding Mr. Brock [If you read the Modest Mouse biography "Pretty Good Read" you'll know what I mean].) Also they're from Issaquah, not Seattle. So that right there is cringe inducing. None of them ever even lived in Seattle, just around it. 2003 - 2005 seemed to have been a very awkward and difficult time period for the Mouse. Just look at Isaac's weight gain. Again, that's all just speculation on my part but when they were doing their own thing without record label restrictions, he was a pretty fit, chill guy. The stress of "Good News" could have worn on him. All that being said, I will always love everything Modest Mouse has and ever will put out and none of that was meant to denounce them.
