Been looking at doing this mod for some time now, but the hassle of having to tool my own connector to fit in the chassis has kept me wanting to bother. After finding this video, I just ordered 2 and if I find I like them, I will do the same for the rest of my G4 arsenal. Thanks!

Purchased this from iTGooch and completed the mod myself. Works like a charm and no more smashing antenna in Pelican case...for travel it is essential for me to have removable antenna. Thanks iTGooch. Reading comments below yes SMA antenna was a little tricky to find but just make sure to match the frequency on back of packs with antenna, I found at the large New York camera/video stores and the huge company that started out as a book seller. My antenna search (even though Sennheisser packs) was: Shure UA710 Replacement Antenna, H4 Band (518-578 MHz)

I just used six of Tim's (ITGooch) kits to mod two G2 pairs and a G3 pair. The fit and quality of the connectors was perfect. The guidance on tools and process also proved to be critical for someone with very little experience doing this type of work. The only question I had was what temperature to use on the soldering iron. I ended up doing a quick search online and used 300 Celsius. I tested every unit throughout the process. It worked perfectly and now I have the option to use bowtie antennas and a splitter to improve range. Well worth the cost for this upgrade that would typically only come with kits far above the cost of my used Sennheiser kits. Much appreciated ITGooch!

@@JimKulakowski thank you so much! When I first started making these, my original plan was just to make them for myself when I modified my friend’s systems. One thing led to another, and then another, and then another, and I found myself perfecting something that I hadn’t really planned on mass producing. Not long after that, I asked around, and discovered that there was a potential market for this. At this stage, I have quite literally made and thrown away 100 prototypes, if not more. I’ve experimented with materials, mold, designs, and assembly techniques. Any changes that I’ve made recently have just been for cosmetics, or ease of manufacture. I long ago figured out how to efficiently do 100% electrical QA testing, as well as test fitting an adapter from each batch of 10 to check for mold degradation. Earlier today, I shipped out another batch of adapters and antennas to a customer in Iceland. It’s his third order! When it’s all said and done, my desire is for every customer to have exactly the experience you’ve had. I’m a one-man shop, who also works as a location sound mixer, and I want people to feel good about sending me some of their hard earned money. Your comment here made my day!

@@itgoochproductions7448 I'm glad to hear that! From the video, I never would have known you had put so much time into perfecting a mod, but there is definitely a market for it. I have one piece of feedback - really more of a question. With the stock antenna, the gap between the body and the antenna is covered by a sleeve that fits around the base of the antenna. As a location sound mixer, I often find myself working in the elements. Actors and actresses may be wearing the transmitters all day, running in and out of rain, or even shooting in an intentionally rainy environment. For that reason, I plan to add a rubber washer between the antenna and body to create a vapor barrier. Should I be concerned with affecting the performance of the antenna by adding this washer? Do you think this is necessary?

@@JimKulakowski , I looked at that, but considering the lack of sealing around the periphery of the case, I surmised that it wouldn’t add much value. Also, the adapters fit into the antenna space very snugly, so that seems an unlikely point for moisture to enter the case. If you decide to add the rubber o-ring, just make sure it’s not so thick as to keep the antenna connector from seating properly.

Honestly, does this actually improve RF reception? I'm having a hell of a whooshing static issue with my G2 IEM's. Tried new antennas on the beltpacks, paddles and whips on the antenna distro, channel hopping....you name it. I'm about at my wits end with these things!
@itgoochproductions7448

I’ve talked to users who see benefits, but in my experience, there’s very little change in reception or strength of transmission unless the stock antenna is damaged in some way. However, the SMA Adapter does facilitate using an antenna distro, which (generally) improves performance. The issue you’re describing sounds like more like a broadband type of interference from an adjacent source, possibly in your bag. I doubt changing to SMA on the belt packs will affect this. Try some isolated testing away from your normal setup, and in relatively quiet RF area (if you can find one). For me, the motivating factor was always ease of antenna replacement in the field and the improved durability of most SMA antennas over the stock unit. (I use G2, G3, and G4 IEM receivers for producer IFBs, so they get a lot of abuse.)

Love the mod. I have a set of g2 E range series (830-866) where the rubber of the receiver antenna starts to go, so I am looking to repair it. Do you have any parts that would work for that?

Ok… so for the G3/G4 series, they changed the range they call “E band” to be 823-866MHz. Yes, the 7MHz difference is won’t cause a noticeable (or even measurable) difference. The center of that band, which is what I cut the antennas for, will be maybe 2-3 MHz lower than the center of the G2 E band.

Besides for being able to replace antenna in the field quickly, are there any other improvements?
@itgoochproductions7448

In my experience, talent (and producers) are notorious about using the antenna to pull these systems out of pockets or off of waistbands. The SMA antennas I make and sell (and most of the ones I've bought), are more tolerant of such abuse. In addition, if you want to connect a Tx or Rx to an external antenna, you'll need an SMA connector. The design of the SMA Adapter places the SMA connector in direct contact with the case, with a typically low resistance to ground on the main PCB, thus providing shielding to an attached coaxial cable.

Hello ! I have interference with the Sennheiser antenna when it rubs against the speaker's clothing (often a suit jacket). Do you think an SMA antenna would avoid this problem or would be less sensitive? Thanks in advance

@@Shadowsil31 Hi! If bumping the antenna creates noise, the antenna needs to be replaced with either a stock Sennheiser antenna or an SMA antenna. If there is any exposed metal wire on the antenna (and this happens often), replacing the antenna should solve the problem. One reason I like SMA antennas is that it’s so easy to replace them. I always have spare antennas in my kit so I can fis this in the field. However, it’s also possible that the microphone cable is the source of noise, so I would try a different microphone first, before buying an adapter and/or a new antenna.

@@itgoochproductions7448 Thank you for your prompt reply. At first, I thought the problem was with the microphone cable, but my various tests prove that it's really an antenna problem. However, I thought it was normal that touching the antenna could cause interference. I'm thinking of buying your adapter and antenna to make the operation easier.

@@Shadowsil31 just let me know if you have any questions about the adapter or installation. I’m glad you were able to eliminate the microphone cable from the equation. Sennheiser uses the shield of the mic cable as part of its diversity antenna system for G3 and G4 systems, so that narrows down the problem to just the antenna. It’s possible that there is a loose solder connection at the circuit board, but once you have the case open, it’s easy to go ahead and replace the antenna, and make a fresh, solid solder connection to the adapter.

The chart below (derived from data from Lectrosonics) specifies how much of the HYS UHF antenna to remove, since the shielding from the connector is hidden, and impossible to measure without destroying the body.
