This is one of our schemes for a modular compact library. We started the design process by questioning the typical library setup in a small 6x6 m space to accommodate three distinct yet essential activities - individual reading, browsing of books (which also requires ample storage space), and interacting/ collaborating, each requiring different levels of social interaction, light and privacy.
What if we divide the area according to these activities in a way that transitions from the least to the most quiet zone? By varying their widths, we are able to easily physically distinguish these zones, as well as allow natural light and air to enter throughout the structure. Pockets of landscape are then integrated.
The ceiling height of the reading area is raised to give the impression of larger and less constricted space. The browsing/ book storage area is raised the highest to take advantage of vertical storage space, leaving more room for reading and interaction.
The reading area is elevated to create the feeling of an intimate nook for reading. This simple gesture also automatically indicates the distinct quality of the reading area which requires more privacy and silence.
Eaves and fenestration is added to regulate daylight, airflow and security.
Using 18 load bearing precast components, structurally it is designed such that there is no need for additional columns and beams. These components are used flexibly for the floor, partitions and roof.
