Learn how to modulate by semitone shift, sometimes known as the truck driver's gear change modulation, this technique is often used in pop music and musicals where the piece shifts up by a semitone towards the end of the song. By performing in one key then using the dominant 7th of the key a semitone above it is possible to effect an immediate modulation up a semitone. Songwriters, composers and arrangers working in other genres will find this helpful, as will those who improvise or who want to accompany singers and choirs doing scale and arpeggio warm-ups. Find out how to do it in this music theory lesson.
