Sheikh Jarrah was called Shimon HatZadik before the 1948 war the Arab league declared on Israel’s first Day of Independence. Then when Jordan occupied Judea and Samaria and changed the name to the West Bank to erase our history and did the same with Shimon HatZadik and changed the name to Sheikh Jarrah. They also killed 600 Jews and expelled the rest so that it was all ethnically cleansed of Jews. Then Jordan put the Arabs in the Jewish owned hoses and said that had to pay a nominal rent but the Arabs didn’t want to pay the rent so it ended up in courts for several years. Jordan also destroyed 56 synagogues and wouldn’t let us pray at Temple Mount which is the holiest site in Jerusalem. They still won’t let Jews pray there but they let us walk around it at certain times a couple of times a week 😢 this is so complex you really should speak to a historian

The Jews must take over the land, this is what God commanded Moses. The land belongs to the Israelites. Thus God promised their fathers [Abraham, Isaac and Jacob (Israel)] it is written in the Koran. The Palestinians are infidels. They are doing against the Koran. The Palestinians should leave the country to 22 Muslim countries they want. They disbelieve in God's command!! The Jews do not need to listen to the Koran because God gave them the Torah thousands of years before Islam!! The Jews believed in God before Muhammad!! The Koran was intended for the foolish idolaters who buried their daughters in the ground and would pray to statues and the sun and the moon. The Jews are the chosen people of all nations!! And this is also written in the Koran. Even if the Jews sin, they are better than the Muslims in God's eyes, because God loves them like a father who loves his beloved son!! This is what is written in the Torah, and this is how God commanded the greatest of the prophets Moshe ben amram ben Kohath ben Levi ben Jacob ben Yitzchak ben Avraham a.h.

What I did notice is that Palestinians are more welcomming and kind and less dogmatic. Palestinians were more generous even tho they have 100 times less the gave everything to welcome Us as guests. Meanwhie Israelian family were more cold and introvert and had many religious rules in their house. It was not cozy. @خالد_الشيباني
Жыл бұрын
Absolutely, Muslims never really cared about Jews more than they cared about Christians or other religious groups before the Nakba. In Palestine and else where, People lived in their communities and neighborhoods and governed them selves using their own laws in the Ottoman Empire. Empires really don’t care about much more than taxes and so as long as you do that, you are fine. The issue came when European Jews wanted to establish a Jewish Zionist state and given the actual discrimination they faced from Christians and Europeans in general, they projected that unto the Muslims. And so ironically Semitic Arabs became anti-Semitic.

@@towntwo451 You mean the status where you govern yourself by your own rules, laws and courts and live peacefully never worrying about fighting wars, while the ottomans recruits Muslims in the next neighborhood to fight, for a tax? I would take that anytime of the day. Not to say that there is no discrimination at all but nothing specific to the jews. In fact the group most discriminated against are Balkan Christians who were forced to conscript to the imperial army. This is just to put things into perspective and not to condone the ottomans. The only time when Christians and Jews were subject to Ottoman law was when there was a dispute with a Muslim which did not happen often given that each people lived in their own communities and neighborhoods. Yes there is dome discrimination against Jews and Christians, it is not pretty (to our modern standards) but certainly much better than what Palestinians live through (3-class system, no freedom of movement, no personal laws and courts, and under constant occupation) or obviously what Jews lived through in Europe. I am not advocating for going back to that but for Palestinians (Including Christians) things have been getting worse since the Zionists started the project of establishing a solely Jewish state in a place that inherently for 1000s of years was multi-cultural. I think the only way forward is a one-state solution were everyone is given equal right but Israel does not want that because there are more Palestinians than Jews and so it wouldn't be a majority Jewish state.

This is a good example of someone dealing exceptionally well with ongoing trauma that they cannot escape from. There is a limit to what you can ask of someone emotionally in this position - it is possible to forgive what's in the past, to move on to different feelings, but when it's happening in the present, when it keeps persisting, and the threat of more is always there, that's not a healthy option. The palenstinans act like savages towards the Jews, not all but alot do. Idk how you would even begin to fix this problem other then both sides wholeheartedly agreeing to stop the conflict between each other. Both sides are equally wrong and equally guilty but I think it's time for change because I have seen interview after interview of millennial Israelis and millennial Palestinians who don't want this conflict to go on anymore and they want to live in peace, so it's the Gen x and boomers that are keeping this conflict alive on both sides.

Lex, I had an experience when I lived in Israel that I wish could be a vision of the future. I'm a Swiss-Australian-American. I lived in Israel for 9 years and fathered two children there with an Israeli woman. I had a red Israeli ID equivalent to Palestinians but because I was living with an Israeli, I had a good working visa that permitted me to work and travel in hi-tech. When I separated from the mother, I was treated as any Palestinian - restricted work rights, restricted travel. They made it impossible for me to earn a living to support my family. I tried to make it work for a year but was left with no choice but to leave the country. I relocated to America with my company and eight years later became a proud American citizen. When I lived in Israel, there was a period that I didn't have a drivers license and needed to take public transport. I found myself sitting on the mini-buses traveling in and out of Tel Aviv. That was the first time I sat beside Palestinians and had the pleasure to discover their side of the story. The Palestinians I met are give short duration permits to enter "Israeli" to work. I remember one old man tell me that all he wants is to be able to take his family to see the places where he grew up, but because Israel limits the ability of young males to exit the occupied territories (they are profiled as potential terrorist risks) this old man was never able to make his dream come true. Incidentally, I have travelled through the West Bank and was shocked to see how the IDF controls the movement of the Palestinian population. One day, I was traveling home on the train from Tel Aviv. In the aisle next to me were two business men talking in Arabic. And I was transported back to the 10 years that I lived and worked in Switzerland when I travelled on the trains and it was not uncommon for your neighbors to be speaking Swiss-German (I lived in the French part of Switzerland and never learnt German). In that moment, and reminded of the story of that old Palestinian man, it seemed to me that Israel could be just like Switzerland if they put aside the racial discrimination. Certainly there are cultural differences, but that is also true of Switzerland. The reason I find Switzerland a great comparison is because it is a small territory like Israel with diverse cultures, languages and politics. Unlike Israel, it has found a way to thrive as a republic for 700+ years. My hope for my children who live in Israel is that the Palestinians and Israelis find a way to live together as a single nation. But my rational side tells me that what I felt in that train listening to the business men chatting in Arabic is an untenable dream because the racial associations are still too entrenched. Rather than considering themselves as a people of a nation, they still insist on considering themselves as a race. Sad but true. Marc

Reporting is neutral (eyes and ears on the ground), investigative has an angle, political/militant too, etc. Go back to the root of the word. What is it to journal? Simply write your piece, every day or week. “Journalists” by trade are those who write the journals of society, they simply chronicle what happens, subjectively so. Standards hold ethically for instance (eg don’t lie! not in your own, not as a trade!) but professionally they pile up as you move up the food chain, as any other sector. Absolutely. I couldn't agree more. This sore of an issue has been festering by the minute... until more than a whole century has past... & longer. *& the world just sits by & watches it.* Some nations take action. (But not always the appropriate one. & often times, they just wind up making things far worse.) To not acknowledge the horrible experience of what it means to be a Palestinian under Israeli rule, or living in an apartheid state, is a negligence on humanity's part. I disagree w/much of Israel's actions. (Especially under far right rule.) *HOWEVER, I still support them (& the Israeli people) in their right to be a nation.* I just wish I could support their actions, but can't. That doesn't mean I can't separate the people from their govt. You can disagree w/a govt & still love its people. As an American, I can't stand the actions (especially the foreign policy) of my govt sometimes. But, as divided as we are, I still love my fellow American. It's the exact same kind of distinction that's necessary & required here, as well.

I love Lex’s romanticism. But here you can really see his limitations. He does not yet have empathy for the oppressed. That is especially evident when Mohammed gives the Jim Crow example. I can feel him defending his humanity against Lex’s seemingly innocent questions (the way black american celebrities had to defend their humanity to white interviewers back in the 60’s). In this interview, Lex has the perspective of the oppressor trying to justify the oppression. His characterization of MLK turning the other cheek is the whitewashed interpretation, dismissing the rage that fueled that social justice movement (the way anger always fuels social justice). But I believe in Lex’s ability to grow. We all need to. ❤

Suggest to read the history. Israel ppl lived in palatine land for thousands year. They were first ones to live there. This is their land. Native Americans lived in NA for thousands. Do we return the lands back to them? It is not what you are living there now. Has to respect the history. Why Israel ppl and palatine ppl live on the same land and become one country to reduce the constant non-solution conflicts for ppl’s peace?

@@yingkenney3507You contradicted yourself by using native americans as a comparison to palestinians because just like the native americans, palestinians are native to their land. the torah even states that when the first jew went to the land of canaan (the canaanites are now the palestinians, lebanese etc…) there were already people there. please do your research.

@@ihyjoey My dear, Palestine was never a country. It never had borders, it never had a government of any kind, it never had coins. That piece of land has been under another country's rule for the past 1400 years. But before that it belonged to the Jews. If you dig, you wil find Jewish artefacts and coins. Also: the word Jeruzalem is not mentioned in the Qu'ran, not even once. But it is the holiest of places for Christians and Jews, like it has been for 3500 years. It is mentioned hundreds of times in the Bible (not that I give a damn about religion but it's difficult to ignore). Yes, there were people living on the land scattered about but the land was completely neglected. Then the British came and suddenly arabs from Egypt and Syria came to work for the British. They stayed and now call themselves Palestinians (you can trace this easily by looking at last names). So, to put it shortly: In 1948 there were about 700.000 'Palestinians' over half of them were Egyptians and Syrians. The Jews however have a 3500 year history with the land.

The fact that jewish ppl lived in Palestine 2000 years ago does not make it their land - at least according to int'l law. Otherwise the US has to return North America to American Indians. Palestinians has lived in that land for past at least hundreds of years if not over 1000 years. If Israel could offer equal citizenship to Palestinians and make it a one state solution that is for peace, but the zionists won't entertain that idea.@@yingkenney3507

I feel like it boils down to: we were here first thousands of years ago, you lot squatted while we were exiled, now we're back to our ancestral homeland, leave. While the other side is like, WTF, we're been here for a thousand years too, you were gone, we made a whole culture here and established roots, you're just using some old book to justify taking our land. I feel like these cultural narratives are so deep, it's never going to be resolvable. How can things change when your entire identity is formed around your birthright to a land?

Nearest history would be the Ottoman archives, to this day we use these contracts and they are valid and you can check before (for your info too the Ottomans didn't occupy any of our countries it was exactly like the EU but better depending on the central or decentralised structures that were followed. And all the land was called Palestine/Syria. There was no Lebanon or Jordan a 100 years ago it was all one big country. Am not going to fall for the trap of having to justify the not very surprising comment down there! But Palestinans have their deeds and its their land. Occupying a land based on a presumable presence that took place thousands of years ago of someone's ancestors is a ludicrous idea, that is quite laughable, it's just a pretty cover for what it trully is "colonialism" backed up by imperialism.

He speaks of his grandmother's home being a restaurant--my grandmother's home in Eastern Europe is an apartment house and no one ever thinks about that--at least this guy had his grandmother, my grandmother was murdered. The Palestinians play the victim card as if they are the only people in the world that have been subject to war and land struggles. I don't have an issue with that but I do have an issue with how so many of you are "suddenly enlightened" when you hear a story from someone who is not Jewish but have never even thought about the relocation of the Jews from Europe and nearly every Arab country. As for the colonial powers, those of us in the United States have some nerve lecturing Israel. Although history does not influence my decisions on these matters, Jews have quite the connection to Israel whereas Europeans do not have thousands of years of connection.

Another point where he lost me is his insistent that "Israelis live constant fear of genocide becuase they are committing genocide on Palestinians", ignoring the fact that Antisemitism is real, the holocaust happened, there were countless pogroms, blood libels, and expulsion from multiple countries. This is a poem for your Lex, because you should talk about the Syrian blight someday soon, because people there in Syria started to think that it's a social experiment not a political issue and a war only, because it's the strangest thing that is happening in the world right now every, this is the beginning of the poem: In ancient lands where tales were told, A story now unfolds, so bold. The people of this land, once strong, Now suffer, with no end in sight, so long. Their homes destroyed, their dreams shattered, Their lives forever changed, nothing mattered. The world turns away, their cries unheard, Their pain ignored, no help conferred. The dollar now equals nine thousand pounds, Their suffering knows no bounds. They struggle to survive, to buy their food, Their dignity stripped, their hope subdued. The world sees only what it wants to see, Blinded by politics, and false ideologies. The Syrian people, once so smart, Now forgotten, left alone to chart. Their skills and talents, a world apart, But the world sees only a broken heart. No care, no help, left to die, Their spirits strong, in the face of the lie. In the land where Damascus once stood, Where science thrived, and knowledge was good, Now a valley of despair, where dreams are crushed, And hope is gone, as the people are hushed. The young dream of escape, to find a way out, From the darkness that surrounds, and the constant doubt. The policies of the bad, have left them trapped, In a land of misery, where life is rapped. Electricity, a dream for the Syrians, A luxury for the few, but for most, it's a burden. One hour a day, a flicker of light, A moment of joy, in the midst of the night. The streets are dark, the drug dealers roam, The people are scared, with no place to call home. Their voices go unheard, with no one to care, Their dreams of a better future, still in despair. But their spirits remain strong, in the face of the night, With hope in their hearts, and a will to fight. For justice, dignity, and a life that is fair, For a land that once thrived, where people could dare. The world needs to see, the struggles they face, To open their hearts, and to find a new place. For the forgotten people, need a helping hand, To rebuild their lives, and reclaim their land. The struggles continue, but the people are strong, With hope in their hearts, and a will to belong. The world needs to see, their strength and their pain, To bring back the light, and to end the reign. In the land where learning once thrived, Where science and knowledge, kept hope alive, Now a place where schools are in shambles, And teachers are paid, with empty rambles. How can we expect, a teacher to give, When their salary, can't even let them live? The dreams of the young, once full of hope, Now shattered, on a downward slope. The world turns a blind eye, to the pain of the few, Associations and organizations, care for animals, not the human crew. Humanity is a lie, in the eyes of the Syrians, A land forgotten, with no place for the paeans. For the people of this land, the struggle persists, A life of misery, with no chance to resist. Their voices go unheard, their dreams shattered, Their hope for a better future, forever battered. The American people, live in luxury, With their pets, and their prosperity. But the Syrian people, have no voice, Their lives a mere shadow, with no choice. And yet, a pet in America costs more, Than a human life, a fact so sore. The world needs to see, the truth of their plight, To open their hearts, and bring back the light. The forgotten people, need a helping hand, To rebuild their lives, and reclaim their land. For every life that's been cut short, For every dream that's been abort, We stand with the Syrian people, in their fight, For justice, dignity and human rights. And yet, their spirits remain strong, With hope in their hearts, and a will to belong. For a land that was once great, with science and knowledge, Now a place of misery, with no place for college. We stand with the Syrian people, in their fight, For justice, dignity, and human rights. The world needs to see, their strength and their pain, To bring back the light, and end the reign. In the land where the Euphrates once flowed, And the cradle of civilization once glowed, A land of ancient history, and a rich past, Now a place of sorrow, where hope can't last. Syria, once a land of great importance, A crossroads of trade, and cultural endurance, A place where science and learning thrived, And the arts and literature, kept hope alive. From the days of Palmyra, to the Umayyad Caliphate, Syria was a land of innovation, and a place to celebrate, But now a land of misery, where dreams are crushed, And hope is gone, as the people are hushed. The world needs to remember, the echoes of the past, To see the beauty of this land, and find a way to last, For the people of Syria, deserve a chance to thrive, To rebuild their lives, and find new ways to survive. In the land of Syria, where dreams have died, And hope is gone, as the people are denied, A place where girls who want to marry, Have no choice but to choose someone scary. For the few eligible bachelors, are often rich, But how did they get there, is the question we pitch, For in a land where treasure is stolen, The wealthy are often thieves, and the poor are broken. The girls have no choice, but to marry for money, And the boys have no choice, but to be funny, To survive in a land where justice is gone, And the people are left to fend on their own. For Syria, a land without choice, Is a place where the people have no voice, Where the powerful rule, with an iron fist, And the poor are left, in a land of mist. The world needs to see, the beauty of this land, To remember the past, and to lend a helping hand, For Syria, a land of ancient history, Deserves a future, of hope and prosperity. For in a land where the future is uncertain, And the people are left, with nothing but a burden, The world needs to remember, the beauty of this place, And to lend a helping hand, with love and grace. The children of Syria, deserve a chance, To learn and grow, and to find romance, But in a land where education is a dream, The future is bleak, and nothing is as it seems. In the land where children once played, With footballs and laughter, in the sun's warm ray, Now a place of poverty, where dreams are crushed, And hope is gone, as the people are hushed. The children of Syria, can't afford a ball, So they play with a bottle, in the yard, to simulate the call, Of a game they love, but can't afford to play, In a land where poverty, is the only way. Their dads are always working, just to bring food, No time for play, or anything else that's good, For in a land where poverty is rife, The struggle continues, with no end in sight.

As an arab, I was betting on Lex with my friends, they said he is jewish and wont represent it fairly…I said so is 2 out of my 3 favorite people, Jon Stewart, you and Dave Chapelle…I won the bet!! Thanks…would you eventually be on par with those two names? Yes if you keep telling the truth…takes a lot of courage, I personally have issues speaking against certain arab acts or islamic laws…and thats in closed loops, so I admire the courage it takes!!

Actually, more courage is needed today to say that Palestinians have no right to kill civilians as a part of their "just" struggle for destroying Israel, which they cannot accept at any borders. Not now and not in 1948 when the UN ruled for a Jewish state in the land of Israel and they and 5 more countries started a war.

@@mordehai2736 If saying that somehow requires courage, then you are soft AF. We got here in the first place because Britain "gave" Palestine over to some Zionists. You act like the war didn't start as a response to colonialism. The parallels between Ukraine and Russia are so precise, but you don't accept that because if China came over here and occupied and started a new state somewhere in America, you'd let it happen and accept it. I refer again to the fact that you are SOFT.

I am so proud of your courageous work and commitment 😊 continue your greatness and don't ever let the nay Sayers discourage you from pushing forward to educate, especially in the age of misinformation, and your interview style: you ask short concise questions, and not to much unneccessary words .When I hear different perspectives, it is healthy from the horses mouths 👄 get the stories out there to us. Love your honest , sincere and unbiased work 😊 and you have me added to your back bone. You are full of professionalism, strengths, empathy, and a profound truth seeker.. May Allah stand beside you as you walk in the shoes of others.

Lex, you are an excellent interviewer and an admirable human being. Keep doing what you do. Listen to both sides of everything. Keep an open mind. Preserve all the disparate views out there. History will thank you. As I like to tell my kids, all the easy problems were solved thousands of years ago, all that's left are the really hard ones. Don't expect easy answers for any of these things.

Why didn't they just stay in Transjordan. They would have more space. They replicate kids like it's no tomorrow most of them could care less if their kids get an education, they just want to be close to Israel to murder as many Jews as possible. Look at what America had to do with the native American Indians who decided to settlers in their sleep. These people act like the people they kill or try to kill have no family or memory.

Thank you for letting the voice of the true story to be heard. This is very very important, because it touches the lives of real human beings. Recently, I was sad because I noticed even many well-educated people were just believing the popular Israeli propaganda. Now, I hope this and similar podcasts help many people to see what happens there actually. I wish you do more like this to have a greater positive impact on the lives of the innocent people. Thank you again!

This is what makes you the best journalist out there imo Lex. Your unbiased, objective presenting of how things and people are. From both perspectives. I salute you for doing this, truly. Thank you.
