This thing Austin is talking about is very foreign to us Europeans because we don't really have this "customer is always right attitude" and what people expect with service is radically different. I was shocked when I learned that in America when you don't like something in a restaurant you told them that and they change it, make you something else or even refund you. In Europe you only complain when there is obviously something wrong with the food or they didn't give you what you ordered and some people won't complain even then. If the food is shit you just accept that it's shit and never go there again. Also the servers don't walk up to you if you're enjoying your food, to fill your drinks etc and nobody is expecting that. Some Americans are shocked in Europe that the attitude towards the customer is very different and that some people in service seem rude or disinterested. In Europe we really don't expect them to smile all the time or specifically accommodate our needs, we know they aren't paid to deal with that bullshit and we don't even want to bother with that. I don't even think that Europeans would like this "good" American service with the waiter constantly bothering you, we don't go to restaurants to talk with the wait staff. And Europeans tend to stay in restaurants sometimes even for hours after finishing their food and don't order anything else, American restaurant people get mad that they're "hogging" the restaurant without buying anything. But in Europe you don't really pay for the food or the drinks, you're paying for a nice place to meet with your friends and you don't want to gtfo right after finishing your meal, it's just the start. But American wait staff hates Europeans because some of them don't know you have to tip (it's very rare in Europe and when it happens it's a very small sum, some wait staff don't even want a tip since it looks like you giving them few bucks like you'd give to a homeless person) and tend to stay long after they've finished their meals. Interesting example of cultural differences
