Ah! Love your videos! I got so excited to see you made a new one, thanks for all the work and effort you put in them. I kinda have an idea for a future video. Have you ever thought about trying to make diy scalp and/or hair masks that have a big chance of actually working? Something instead of cracking a useless egg on your head, baking soda 💀, or adding a bunch of humectants like you mentioned in this vid. I know this could easily become overly complicated (and that you’re a wonderful hair nerd and not a professional product creator) so I know this might be a crappy idea so sorry if thats the case. You made another amazing vid! Thanks for teaching us so much about hair! ❤️✨🌟👑

@@Koki-hc3mw I want to be supportive of other women creators. Especially Black women. And even more especially when it comes to Black women and your hair. Your hair has significance to you in ways mine cannot. Black women throughout history have been and continue to be some of the greatest innovators in haircare, and you deserve to be lifted up and acknowledged for that. It’s not my place to argue or try to convince anything; I do believe ethically it is my responsibility to share the evidence we have from research, and you can do with that whatever you want and it’s none of my business. At the same time, I do feel I personally was misrepresented in that video. I refuse to use products with aloe vera. I'm not sure if it's the aloe or something else, but everytime my hair gets all tangled and crazy is usually when aloe is in the ingredients list so I'm thinking that aloe needs to be avoided at all costs. Then again, I have hard water, so maybe it's the hard water that's causing my hair to be all dry, frizzy and a tangled knotted mess when I get out of the shower??? 🤷🏼 It's so bad, that I cannot brush it. I don't know how to stop this or what to do about it because aloe seems to be in all products at the drugstore. Don't have much money to pay shipping costs online, but if I shop at the drugstore, I'm stuck with very few products to choose from because most have aloe in them. I found you via your original “dry hair” video and ended up staying up late bingeing so many more of your videos, I love the way you present info in a researched, informative way that’s still fun to watch! So glad I found your channel! 💛 I do have a question though. A lot of curly styling techniques that I’ve found to work really well for me 2B-3A hair specifically involve getting water in the hair, emulsifying it with conditioner, and trapping it in. This includes the “squish to condish” method and adding oils while the hair is damp. My question is, does this “work” because the water in the hair is just keeping the hair in its natural state (like a controlled way to get the curls one might get in humidity)? Or does the water just help the conditioner to bind to the hair? Or is this something that is actually harmful and doesn’t do what it seems to?
@SarahIngleOfficial
3 жыл бұрын
Water breaks the hydrogen bonds in the hair, which allows the hair to snap back to its natural state - and when it dries, the bonds reform and hair holds whatever shape it dries in. So with waves or curls, those waves and curls reform and probably will look more defined - or you can scrunch the hair and make those waves and curls look even more pronounced. It’s more that you don’t want products that are designed to hold water into your hair. The water itself does the hydrating, and a big reason for that hydration is to break hydrogen bonds. If you have a product that literally hydrates - like a humectant like pure glycerin - that bond isn’t going to reform completely and your hair won’t hold its style as well. Since hair holds whatever shape it dries in, if it’s not ever entirely dry, all your moving about your day is going to keep messing with the shape and it’s probably going to get frizzy. Plus, hair is more fragile while it’s wet. People also ask then why do you comb or detangle curly hair while it’s wet? The more curly the hair, the greater the combing force. When combing force is greater than the strength of the hair, the hair breaks. You know how when someone with super curly hair jumps in the pool, it goes from big curls to flattened out from the water when they pull their head out of the water? The curls are temporarily flattened out from the water. Curls have such a strong effect on combing force, that even a little bit of straightening dramatically reduces that force. There are some other reasons too, but that’s a big one.

Hi, really happy I found your channel ✨ I have curly hair and after your videos I’m really confused on how to use water in my routine. In your last video you said there are no studies that confirm that cuticles raised by water actually could be damaged. I work with a lot of water on washdays, like I use my conditioner on super wet hair, if it still feels coarse I add a little more water instead of products and its better, i squish to condish, before i even used the bowl method to really get the crown area, then I style on soaking wet hair. I sometimes refresh with some water & add leave in. My goal isnt to keep that water in but just to work better with the products. So thats like once a week or a little more. Is that damaging? Because as you say our hair doesn’t need more water. So I just don’t get it or idk if I totally missed the point 😶 and another question for a friend: her curls at the crown/roots area won’t clump even after conditioning them, or even alternating with products with a bit of protein like sprays or leave ins. The hair at the roots is soft, shiny (not brittle and dry) but the curls just won’t clump. She has 3b hair. Thanks for answering ✨

off topic, my hair becomes nice and lightly curly when I get rained on a little. I try to imitate this my splashing water on my hair but it doesn't work. I might need to check the ph of rain water and tap water? Or the tap water might not have the same minerals? I'm not sure what exactly is working so well with a light rain. very curious though. subscribed. I'm obsessed now lol

I really love that you bring science into beauty but I have to push back against the home remedies a bit. So many products are hazardous for your health and hair, even ones that claim to be clean beauty aren't completely honest. These products are not peer-reviewed or FDA approved. I looked for studies on olaplex and couldn't find anything that wasn't sponsored by the company. I don't think these products are any better than what you make at home. At least with DIY products we have more control over what goes into them. Also some DIY methods are rooted in traditional beauty care that has worked very well for mamy women over countless generations. To me that's better proof than what I've seen from those companies. When I went to India I saw women with hair even longer and thicker than yours who simply made all their own products and used lots of coconut oil. I dabbled in DIY and made my own conditioner which has been the best product I've ever used. I think he should reexamine your views on DIY and maybe take a more moderate perspective.

If you have a home remedy that works for you, that's excellent and there's no reason you shouldn't keep using it. Many people attempt DIY treatments without knowing what they're doing, though, and wind up seriously damaging their hair. Even a basic pH test could solve many of these problems. Lab Muffin Beauty Science has a phenomenal video on the clean beauty movement. She primarily discusses it in relation to skincare, but it's applicable to hair, as well. My hairdresser recently asked me if i wear a lot of necklaces cause that can cause hair breakage as the rubbing of the necklace on your neck will break your hair off. Great video and very detailed points. However, following this I found a study stating that the strength of the hair is in part related to the moisture level within the hair fiber. The same study found that chemical treatments such as bleaching and relaxing (which is what I do) damaged hair fibers, resulting in a pronounced decrease in their water content compared to untreated hair. I believe this suggests that actual dry hair as in loss of water content is a thing that can have causes other than environmental factors. People with chemically treated hair would therefore benefit from putting that moisture back in to the hair somehow which is different from conditioning. What do you think ?
@SarahIngleOfficial
3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I believe the study you’re referencing is from a thermophysics journal and was conducted by engineers and physicists who wanted to test new technologies for measuring water content in things like hair. They’re experts in the measurement technology - not actually the hair itself - and were demonstrating the use cases for such a technology in other fields of science, like for cosmetic chemists who focus on hair. At first glance, the results appear to contradict all the other studies on hair that found that hair water content is controlled primarily by relative humidity, and that once fully equilibrated, damaged hair tends to contain somewhat more water because the layers of the hair that repel water are often missing. However, a closer look at the study reveals that this is not the case. When you look at the methodology, it actually supports the other literature. Hair that is not damaged has a more tightly sealed cuticle, so it takes slightly longer for water to get in and out and adjust to the relative humidity. In this case, they started the hair off wet then measured how much water was still in the hair after a couple hours. It makes sense that the damaged hair would be drier at this point - the cuticle allows it to equilibrate more quickly since water can travel in and out more easily. In contrast, when cosmetic chemists study hair water content levels, they usually wait a full 24 hours before measuring to ensure it is fully equilibrated.

Is overly conditioned hair a thing? There have been times where I’ve had to lightly shampoo the mids and ends of my hair to get it feeling soft again after conditioning a lot. For reference, i condition mainly with oils before I shower. My overly conditioned hair never felt greasy, but just had a weird soft texture that in turn ended up feeling almost dry

Maybe I need to rewatch the video because I still don't get it. So we don't need to add or trap water into the hair, yet conditioner, both regular and leave-in, yield better results if I apply them when my hair is wet. After watching these videos I thought if I applied my leave in conditioner while my hair was just a little bit damp (vs wet, like I did before) the results would be better, but that was not the case for me. So I really don't know what to take away from this video, I'm kind of confused still. But thank you for the information!

There are certain products that you still apply when wet. And you still need to wash your hair so it gets clean. It’s not that water never has a place in anyone’s routine; it’s just that you don’t need to try to hold water in your hair because more water generally = more damage.

I used to use a humectant agenda product tho on my wavy/curly hair & it made it so nice, your science makes sense but that confuses me bc it made my hair better
@SarahIngleOfficial
3 жыл бұрын
A few things may be happening. 1 - Getting hair wet lets curls/waves return to their natural state, so water can definitely be helpful to get them to spring back to their original shape. It doesn’t mean that your hair “needed moisture” tho - it’s just breaking the hydrogen bonds in the hair (just like heat does too) & when the bonds reform when the hair dries (or cools off), the hair stays in that shape until it gets wet or hot & the bonds break again. 2 - Adding humectant ingredients doesn’t necessarily mean that formula will still draw in moisture - even if it’s advertised that way. Mixing different quantities of ingredients at different temperatures for different lengths of time causes chemical reactions that can literally change ingredients into completely different substances. For example, just putting an ingredient into a formula doesn’t mean that the end product even contains that substance anymore because it may react with another ingredient and change into something else entirely. Also, sometimes certain ingredients that are totally useless in a formula get added anyway because marketing knows people look for them. 3 - Humectants don’t necessarily draw water into your hair. Even with all our fancy hair products, we have way less control over hair’s moisture content than we’ve been led to believe. Relative humidity determines the baseline, and anything we put on our hair at best has a shot of marginally changing that baseline. Even glycerin, which is a very effective and popular humectant, doesn’t do anything to hair’s moisture content at most humidity levels. It can only start to make hair adsorb more water when there’s high relative humidity.
