Mojave Road. On 9 April 2016 we set out with the San Diego Jeep Club to conquer the infamous Mojave Road for what would end up being one of the most epic Jeep overlanding adventures we had every been on.
Our overland journey started with an overnight stay in a Laughlin, Nevada Casino Hotel. Early on Saturday morning, we got the group together, had a drivers meeting and set out on the Christmas Tree trail. The end of Christmas Tree trail ends near a gas station that we all topped off our tanks, air downed our tires and drove 5 miles to the start of the Mojave Road.
The Mojave Road was beyond expectations. Truly, we envisioned this road to be open and desolate, but the terrain was ever changing, the scenery was amazing and with the crazy Thunderstorms, things got interesting.
Our journey was suppose to be a 2 day adventure, but due to heavy rain we were forced to take an unplanned detour. Our original plan was to cross Soda Lake and set up camp in the early afternoon.
The rain had turned Soda Lake into a mud pit that was impassable and we were forced to navigate several hours around the lake which was very challenging. Eventually, we made our way to the Afton Campground for a restful night.
“This famous trail is the Mojave Road, one of the early routes that brought American pioneers to California. This trail is unique in that for most of its 138 mile stretch it is in much the same condition as the pioneers would have found it, and a lot of the trail passes through country that is virtually unchanged since prehistoric times. The road bisects the Preserve, wandering from waterhole to waterhole, and is mostly a 4-wheel-drive trail.”
