I would use a damp tea towel instead because paper towels leave little paper fibres whenever you wipe coarse surfaces especially when they’re wet.

I recommend using salt and lime juice or citric acid. It's easy to rinse out, doesn't taste bad, and it will kill ant germs or mold. I also like to stick mine in the oven or over a stove top burner for a bit just to make sure it's completely sterile before I season it

This is actually really cool, reminds me of when I was little on a walk with my family and I managed to find a Native American one of these. It’s super cool, I think we just have it outside somewhere. I found it because it was upside down and my curious child mind thought to pick it up, just cause it looked like an extremely round large rock. Turned out that the inside was perfectly hollowed out and round. Pretty awesome. My dad even had some of the grinding parts ‘pestles’ or something. It’s really neat.

I clean it with vinegar and rinse with warm water, then let it air dry or pat dry with a clean cloth if it's winter and would take longer to dry on it's own. Otherwise, the food residue and smell won't come off it. I always keep it by the stove too, so it doesn't have time to hold moisture.

The dry rice doesn't clean per se, but it loosens bits of stone; it's just used to help the smooth the surface before initial use. You can brush and rinse it out after smoothing out the molcajete. The little bit of water that will interact with larger bits of rice that get lodged isn't going to soften or absorb into the rice so much that it will get moldy or anything. If you fill the molcajete with water and let it sit, then maybe, but it dries plenty for this not to be an issue. Molcajetes are known for being lifelong, even multi-generational products. If they were becoming petri dishes, it would be well-known by now.

I wouldn't exactly describe that as cleaning, like sure it's removing debris but not any pathogens or all of the oil buildup, maybe some through absorbing it in the rice but far from everything. Rinsing ain't the right word either but it feels a bit wrong to describe that as cleaning, at least to me
