Molten steel is transferred from the blast furnace to specific locations using "torpedo" cars which typically hold about 300 tonnes of liquid steel. A ladle is then placed underneath, the torpedo rotates about its long axis, resulting in transfer of steel. Ladles typically hold 150 tonnes, so each torpedo can fill to such containers. The ladle is then transferred to the furnaces on the right, where desulphurisation takes place. The steel is then ready for the secondary steel-making process. The video was recorded at TATA Steel in Jamshedpur.
