The misty village of Molungkimong, perched atop the pristine hills of Mokokchung district of Nagaland, is home to a rich tapestry of stories that have played a key role in shaping the history of Nagaland. This historic village, where the first Church in Nagaland was established by the American Baptist missionary Rev. Dr. E. W. Clark on December 22, 1872, offers glimpse into the origins of Christianity and the consequent inception of modernity in the Nagaland.
The historic sites like the path taken by the American missionary from Sibsagar, Assam, to the village, the smoke telegraphy used by the escorting villagers to signal the arrival to the missionary to the villagers, monolith in honour of the 60 warriors who escorted Clark from Assam, the village gate that welcomed Christianity, the first baptistery, monument of the first church, statue and monument of Clark, statue of Supongmeren, the native interlocutor who was instrumental in bringing Clark and Christianity to the village, all weave together into an exquisite fabric of the remarkable history.
As you journey through the village, you will also witness WWII history in the form of an inspiring WWII memorial and a museum that pay homage to the fallen soldiers of a USAAF plane that crashed in the vicinity of the village in 1944. The memorial is erected at the crash site and the museum at the center of the village exhibits an 11 feet replica of the plane along with the wreckage parts, pictures, documents and stories of the fallen soldiers.
