when I was in 7th grade I wanted to cut my hair (always had waist length, strawberry blonde hair that my mother adored) and I didn't even want it super short or anything, I just wanted it to be about shoulder length so it was more manageable (especially during the heat of the summer) and she screamed at me that i would be "ugly" without my hair, that it was the best thing about me. when I persisted that I desperately wanted a haircut, she grabbed my hair in a rage and chopped it off with the kitchen scissors and said "there's your f*cking haircut!" and some parts were so short I had to literally shave my head after that. cut forward to high school and bc of reasons that should be obvious at this point I'm living with my dad who has ALWAYS embraced me doing whatever I want and what makes me happy. I had probably 200 different hairstyles/colors through high school and it was great to get to express myself. shout out to all the parents that embrace their kids individuality. y'all are the best 🎉

I wasn't allowed to choose anything on my own growing up, whether it was clothes or hairstyle or anything else. Now that I'm a mother, when my children show genuine interest in something I do everything I can to support and encourage them. My daughter wanted her hair cut above her shoulders and also asked for bangs/fringe so I had her think about it for a few days to be sure it was what she wanted, then we got it cut like she wanted. My youngest son wanted a mohawk and I did the same thing: gave him time to think about it and make sure that's what he wanted and then got it done for him. I'm the same way with things they're interested in like art, animals, video games, building, singing and/or dancing, etc. I was never supported in my interests while growing up and I refuse to be that sort of parent to my children. 🤘🏻❤️🔥

I know it may sound weird but they think of it "now I'm old and my daughter is still and pretty little lady " . A narcissistic mother may perceive her daughter as a threat. When a mother envies and then criticizes and devalues her daughter, she diminishes the threat to her own fragile self-esteem. As a daughter analyzes what her mother appears to be jealous about, she comes to feel unworthy. They can be competitive with the child, ignore the child's needs, become jealous and angry when the child innocently outshines the parent, and treat you well in public and around others but revert back to the insensitive, cruel narcissist behind closed doors That's from google btw

my mother did the same to me. in our culture it’s seen as a symbol of beauty to have long, thick hair and so when i wanted a hair cut she would always cry and tell me i can’t cut my hair or i won’t be pretty anymore. finally right before covid hit i chopped all of my hair off and only had two inches left, that’s when the weight (literally) lifted off my shoulders. my mother was very upset, but i was 20, i was an adult capable of making my own decisions

It’s the opposite in my situation… growing up I’ve always wanted long hair but every time my hair length touched my shoulders, it got chopped off above my chin. I always cried when my mom took me to hair salon cause I knew what it’s gonna happen. The reason why my mom did this is because she said she could save more time not having to take care of my hair: shampooing, drying and styling it when I was too young to do it all by myself. While looking back now that I’m grown, it’s understandable, but still makes me a bit sad thinking of it.

The first thing I did when I turned 18 was buzz all of my hair off. My mom lost her mind over it. I was never allowed to have short hair, either. I cut my hair behind my moms back last April, and she was devastated. We got it fixed at the hair salon and I thought it looked beautiful. It was above shoulders length, and it really suited me. It’s brown a lot now and it’s past shoulders length, when it gets longer I will cut it again. I feel as though parents should let their children express themselves through their hair and let them do what they want with it, give them a little more freedom.

But me as SEA person, I start dyed my hair for 2 years now.. It start when I was 13 at Dec so in Jan I turn 14 last year and do some colour changing.. Luckily my mom allowed this.. I do this bcs I have original black hair colour and don't like it bcs when I look myself at mirror I sometime saw a long black hair ghost.. My mother reacted similar but instead of showing sadness she expressed anger. All my life I had long thick really curly hair and people would always compare me to Disney characters like Moana. It’s as if my hair became my identity and it became the center of my beauty. During the pandemic (2020) I thought it was time for a change and to learn how to love myself without hiding behind the hair. I shaved it all off. She was pissed. But she couldn’t really force me to do anything because I was already 18. Fast forward to today and I just chopped it all off AGAIN. In between the time of 2020 until recently i experimented and died my hair all sorts of colors so it was very damaged. I decided it was time to grow my hair back long and healthy so here I am now…growing my hair back knowing that I’m also beautiful bald 😭 lol

I'm surprised that I've actually had the exact opposite experience from most of these comments, my mom likes her hair shorter, but as a kid I always wanted to grow my hair out as long as humanly possible. My mom would take me to the hairdresser to get it cut to "keep the ends healthy" but they would always cut off way more than they needed to and I would cry myself to sleep for a week because I could never get my hair past my sternum. The last straw was when I was 18 and asked the hairdresser to keep my hair long and she cut 6 inches off because my mom said "take as much as you need" "no shorter than that" the entire appointment and the hairdresser is a family friend. She's fought me tooth and nail every step of the way, saying it's "distractingly long" and it's "unhealthy" despite the fact that it's still growing rapidly and it's healthier than its ever been nearly at my elbows. It makes me so happy to finally be able to stand up to her and not let her cut my hair. Good job to you for doing what makes you happy!

Haircuts can do so much. I think the most flattered I have ever been was when my 7 year old second cousin told her mom she wanted to get a pixie cut because she liked how my hair looked. It looked adorable on her, and her mom (my cousin) told me that it was the first time she really saw her daughter starting to express herself. She was always very shy, and never talked very much. But her mom told me that she was talking a bit more and seemed more confident afterwards. All just because she liked how her hair looked. And I was so happy to be the one who inspired her to cut her hair short. ☺️

I had hip length hair until I was over 9. Then, just a few months before my 10th birthday, I cut it to mid length. I thought THAT was short. I didn’t like how heavy it was getting and how hard it was to style/brush. Then January this year, I cut it to slightly under my shoulders. I’ve never been prettier. Sure, everything else is ugly, but my hair has never been prettier and it honestly makes my everything else look prettier too. I went from the shy, awkward kid to the funny, unhinged kid because people actually approached me to know my true personality. And now, I have so much more confidence, and don’t have to worry about people judging me. If my parents never let me cut my hair, I don’t know where I’d be now. Probably not at the school I go to now. Bullies were getting out of hand.

I have a similar story! I always had long hair and then started slowly progressing towards a "boy cut", until I dyed it bright red and then shaved it all off. I've still kept it very short (getting close to mullet territory and I'm not mad about it), and I don't think I'll ever have long hair again unless it's a wig.

My mom slapped me and didn't talk to me for weeks when I cut my hair above my ears. I had long brown hair for years just because she never allowed me to cut it, so when I turned 18 I had my first cut without her being around. She yelled at me and went crazy when she saw me, she said she didn't want a lesbian as a daughter and didn't tell a word after that. I love my mom, but I don't think I'd be able to forgive her someday for all she did to me.

I'm sorry u went thru that ❤️ but why does she think "short hair=lesbian" it's like u can't be queer with long hair??? lmao the logic. (i hate when people put sexualities on hairstyles and clothes etc.)

@@hyacinthz5499 I've wondered myself the same. She always says she doesn't discriminate and that she has gay friends, but then she suddenly happen to be so scared of me liking a girl or acting a lil "masculine", seems like she's okay with anyone being gay only if she's not related to them.

It was the same too... I wanted a pixie cut, so i cut it myself on a whim. My grandma helped me too and it looked a lot more boyish than i anticipated. but i. Loved it! I wanted to show my mom and sent her a pic... And she didn't like it... She never said it directly but my dad told me she was worried i was gonna look like a lesbian. I grew my hair long since then. And i want to cut it back to a shorter length. And i am actually sapphic so that's tough and I'm scared I'm gonna be a stereotypical lesbian now...
