Thank you well explained formula just one alteration mussle velocity 242 m per sec not all the energy is consumed by the bullet, if the mussle was close to the block there would be a residue of mussle blast also hitting the block along with the energy of the bullet.The velocity of the bullet is ideally measured some small distance away from mussle blast..Iam a keen Deer hunter in New Zealand Keep up with all your physics lectures cheers Mark

When deriving the the formula for initial velocity, why did you not also divide v' by m? So v = [(m+M)*v'/m] ? So then v-bullet = 2.30m/s?

Sir, I think u made a mistake in : v=[(m+M)/m)] . v'. The answer should b: v=(1+M/m). v' = 243.69 m/s

@@stepbystepscience you made a mistake sir . if you used brackets for (1+ 1.8/0.017) 2.28 the answer would be correct. NB calculator uses BODMAS rule.

The 800ft/sec isn't the muzzle velocity, that remains unknown - other than being greater than 800ft/sec

Are you still active on this site? In the problem you solved for velocity, if you know the velocity and angle of deflection what is the calculation for energy imparted to the block or knock down power in hunting terms? Really loved the video, really scratching cobwebs.
