@stacie1197

@@wilburmcbride8096 because they then see people as a source of food and are not scared of us. Most bears will run from people, not once they are fed regularly. They will approach people looking for food. And if that person doesn't have any, or runs.... Well, it could end badly for the person. Here in Gatlinburg, tourism is massive. Too many risks come with feeding any wild animals. And IF caught, there are large fines that come with it. People just get so excited when they see bears, as do I. They are gorgeous, but deadly animals. It's not fair for them to be euthanized due to our mistakes. Google or KZitem bears in Gatlinburg. You will be amazed by all the stories and people getting WAY to close to them.

Its part of living in the smokies, even in the middle of town you never know. They will casually stroll right into stores or down the street. We had something like that happen to us once when I was a child. We spent the night in this parking lot in the mountains between Tennessee and north Carolina and we were woken up in the middle of the night by a small black bear on the hood of our car and it wasn't even bothering us. It didn't try to attack or anything. It was just lying there on the hood just hanging out with us and being friendly, like it was saying "howdy, folks. How y'all doing?" The next morning, we woke up and the bear was gone. So we got out of the car to wake up and stretch our arms and legs and continued the rest of our vacation time there.

@Jayne Eyre ,. And people are attacked here too. Every year areas are closed because of bear activity in the Smokeys. Why? Tourist who think they're cute and cuddly. The leave out food and practice bad habits of not cleaning up around their campsites, and tourist rentals. These bears come to these rental cabins year after year because they know there's an easy meal available. I've lived here my whole life. I know what I'm talking about. Hikers on the AT and tourists are just ignorant visitors who leave after a few days or weeks of creating a problem we end up having to deal with constantly. Look at the comments and you can see the cause of the problem. Many times these animals have to be put down because of the bad habits caused by tourists who think they're cute. We have the largest concentration of black bear in N America here in Western NC and E Tenn. We can live with the bears, Tourists are a nuisance!
@altitudeiseverything3163

While black bear attacks are rare, they do happen and sometimes they are completely unprovoked. Experts advise those attacked by grizzlies to play dead, but if a black bear attacks you, they say *not* to play dead, but to fight back with everything you’ve got. Why? Because when black bears do attack without provocation, they are most likely doing so with the intention of eating you! Wild animals, especially predators are not “cute”; they are not pets; even the omnivores can kill you, and their behavior is unpredictable. Last year, a teenage boy who was asleep at his campsite near my neighborhood (in a western state) was woken up by a crunching sound; that sound was a black bear biting down on the boy’s skull - NOT kidding! His friends fought the bear off and luckily he made a full recovery. Bottom line - admire them from a safe distance and be prepared with bear spray when you hike. No degree of familiarity with people will guarantee that a bear will not attack. I’ve never had a bear encounter turn dangerous, but it only takes once.

There is actually a video somewhere on u tube a guy is taping a grizzly bear mom and its cub and a black bear gets to close to her cub and she chases the bear all the way to the top of a couple of 200 ft+ trees. ALL THE WAY TO THE TOP WHERE IT GETS FLIMSY AS SHIT.

Cool video. We have black bears (sometimes with cubs) come through our property. Mostly, they just toss our trash cans and move on. If you don't mess with them, they usually don't mess with you. A few times, bears have managed to get inside peoples' vehicles and not be able to get out. I never would have imagined how a bear can destroy the inside of a vehicle, but it's pretty remarkable. To get them out, either someone opens the door and runs away, or a window is shattered and allows the bear to escape.
