Meteorologist Ashley Renee has your 5:50 am forecast. Good morning and happy Monday! Hopefully you all had a great weekend. We’re starting a new day, week and month with very hot weather. An excessive heat warning was in effect yesterday and another one will be in effect today. The time frame is from 10 am until 7 pm. Highs will be in the upper 90s and heat indices will be near 115. Remember to follow the heat safety tips to keep you and your loved ones (pets too) safe from experiencing heat-related illnesses. Skies will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy and we’ll have some showers and thunderstorms moving through our area. A weak front moving south through our area will also help produce showers and thunderstorms. The showers will develop and move through this afternoon and gradually come to an end this evening. Tuesday will be another very hot day with highs in the upper 90s and heat indices near 110-115. An excessive heat watch will be in effect tomorrow from 10 am until 7 pm. We should stay rain-free during the morning hours, but showers and thunderstorms will develop during the afternoon hours. This is the pattern that we’ll see throughout this week. And as an upper-level ridge continues building in over our area, that will contribute to the higher temps. The ridge might remain strong enough all this week and into the weekend. If it weakens some, then that may allow for more easterly wind flow which will bring in more Gulf moisture and help rain chances to increase. Tracking the tropics: (Invest 94L) became Tropical Storm Chris yesterday evening. As of 4 am, it has wind speeds of 40 mph and is moving west at 12 mph. It has already made landfall along the Gulf coast of Mexico. (Invest 95L) became Hurricane Beryl on Saturday and upgraded to a major hurricane by Sunday afternoon. As of this morning, it still has maximum sustained wind speeds of 120 mph (Cat.3) and is moving west at 20 mph. It will continue bringing heavy rainfall, hurricane force winds and flooding to the Windward Islands. It will continue moving west through the Caribbean. Lastly, there is Invest 96L. It’s not too far behind Beryl and could possibly develop into a tropical depression or storm within the next couple of days. As of now, there still aren’t any threats for us here in Louisiana and along the northern Gulf Coast, but that will depend on if the ridge of high pressure remains strong enough and centered over our area for a few more days. If it weakens some and moves to the east, then that might allow for Beryl to take a turn and move north. If it does, then the next concern will be which direction it goes if it does turn north. There’s still some uncertainty concerning its track past the end of this work week, but we will of course do our best to keep you informed. Thanks for tuning in. Have a magnificent Monday!
