You take bands like this for granted when you are younger, only later realising how great they really are. I grew up loving the harder stuff, AC/DC, The Angels, etc, but Mondo Rock are a superb band, I hope they are never forgotten.

Couldn’t agree more. Mondo Rock were never anyone’s favourite band and never sexy but as I get older I appreciate his brilliance. From Daddy Cool to Mondo Rock to producing The Johnny’s to writing for John Farnham, Ross is brilliant and the Australian music industry should give him more credit. Rick Springfield covered this song too.

I know your name, I told you mine We've stopped and passed the time of day You work in town, I work at night That gives us six until seven to work this out If I seem a little strange It's just the state of the heart I'm waiting here for you In the state I'm in You are the moon, I am the sea You pull me in and gaze on down at me I was alone, I thought I was immune It's good to know The door can still be open wide If I seem a little strange It's just a state of the heart I'm waiting here for you In the state I'm in, oh yeah If I seem confused It's just the state of the heart I wait in the dark In the state I'm in, yeah, yeah If I seem a little strange It's just the state of the heart I'm waiting here for you In the state I'm in If I seem confused It's just the state of the heart You know I wait in the dark In the state I'm in, yeah, yeah It's the state of the heart The state of the heart The state of the heart The state of the heart

Just heard this version after only knowing Rick Springfield's cover for the longest time. Love both of them! For me, Mondo Rock's original reminds me of a 50's doowop ballad with some slow 60's British rock feel and 70's instrumentation (specifically the electric piano). The sparse instrument arrangement gives it a very intimate feel, like you're in a tiny nightclub. My only criticism is that the last minute feels very repetitive and can either be cut down a bit or use some variety. Rick Springfield's version is definitely a full-on 80's commercial ballad. It's a very lush arrangement with layers and layers of synthesizers, but it works quite well. I feel like the new bridge works really well considering the lyrics it transitions from, and the ending feels a less repetitive and more conclusive. There are elements that I love from both. I love Mondo Rock's sparse instrumentation and slower beat, and prefer Rick Springfield's bridge, ending, and angsty lovelorn singing. It would be awesome if someone could cover this again with these elements.

I thought the song was appropriate for that Qantas jet scene in movie. Saroo is a confused state of the heart. Although he is moving on to a new and better life in a first world nation, he longs to see his natural family in India.
