Some economists have projected that both the U.S. and parts of Europe could slip into a recession for a portion of 2023. A global recession, defined as a contraction in annual global per capita income, is more rare because China and emerging markets often grow faster than more developed economies. Essentially the world economy is considered to be in recession if economic growth falls behind population growth.

I read his piece and it’s not hard hitting at all. Pretty tame. The actual reason for the uptick in sanctions by the US levied against dozens of countries is because the U.S. empire is in decline. They are attempting to maintain their hegemony through imperialism, the military industrial complex (either war or proxy war), and sanctioning the hell out of as many other nations as possible. Not a mention of that in his article. And barely a mention of China at all. Several countries are “dedollarizing” in favor of the Chinese Yuan. Stein writes “The dollar remains the world’s top reserve currency, at least for now.” That’s it. That’s the closest he’s willing to get to admitting it’s in decline. Of course he doesn’t want to ruffle the feathers of his billionaire boss Bezos by being frank. The piece reveals very little of what is actually happening.

America became full of hot air after the collapse of Soviet Union in the early 90s. It was the "end of history" according to Fukuyama, and the smug elites and their beliefs filtered down and we deceived ourselves that America was the best and sat on our laurels. America is nothing but a nation of a highly disproportionate and unhealthy number of rent-seekers adding nothing to the real value of the economy. Thirty years of disastrous domestic economic and foreign policies that have hollowed out the real economy and made enemies of so many peoples around the globe. For what, but for the avarice of ever increasing unearned power and riches of the deep state/plutocracy that rule under the guise of a democratic Republic? Is this what the best and the brightest minds of Ivy League institutions can come up with? What a difference thirty years make. China is now the biggest "real" economy in the world while Russia is the most powerful military force and they just happen to be allies as well. What could go wrong? If a conventional hot war were to break out tomorrow is there any doubts that Russia would beat the crap out of America? Not only are their weapons system far more superior overall, but Russian soldiers know how to fight...and die for a real cause defending their homeland and perhaps for a truly "rules based international order" that the US likes to trot out while it dispenses with its gross hegemony. The time is nigh.

@@sweetaznspice1great comment. I agree 100%. I would add years to your 30 yr line. I would say the tipping point to today started in 1980 w/ election of Reagan. Reaganomics, the shift to a top down economic system along with the proliferation of private military contracts gone amuck with access to our public treasury under the guise of national security. Deregulation of public needs (insurance, healthcare), the increase in privatization of gov services. All amounting to a a Wall St. industry of run amuck stock market. This was the beginning of the “debtor government/society economy” (prof. Richard Wolff has a great video on this with in-depth explanation of how it was designed to work to create an indebted society financed by the rich with high interest). 1776-1980 national debt= $800 billion 1980-1988 national debt= $4.75 trillion Gov gives tax cuts to the rich. Then borrows that same money that used to be taxed from them with interest paid on it. Our once public treasury became a corporate trough buffet leaving the American public owing the bill

1:15 key phrase here "Making the ____ economy scream" is how Kissinger put forth the idea of viciously attacking the democratically-elected governments of Allende in Chile and Manley in Jamaica resulting a bloody coup d'etat which resulted in decades of the fascist regime of Pinochet in the former and, with the latter, a de facto civil war between the JLP and PNP which still flares up from time to time today. The Kissingerian phrase that Goodman uses "making the Venezuelan economy scream" totally invalidates the argument that these economic bombing missions target government officials. No, these inhumane measures are designed to make things so unbearable that either people will abandon their countries (further supporting the argument that these governments are illegitimate and or that these are failed states) or will rise up in revolt - to help the US government cost effectively reinforce/expand its hegemony.

Instead of selling weapons the GDP should be investing in stuff that benefits the country like in hospitals, housing, and providing food to the poor

GDP should be investing? I'm pretty sure GDP has no say in federal spending. We already feed the poor and subsidize low income families housing. Do you even live in the US, cuz this is common knowledge.

The problem with the United States economy and governance approach to other countries is it's intents and deliberate desire to micromanage partner and enemy countries to extent it draws even intended budgetary proposals for such countries, including educational challenges, curriculum and funding, the most absurdity when a partner or friendly country or enemy aligns with such proposals it's woes multiply and when economic sanctions are imposed, failure is eminent and potentially lethal

The real measure of sanctions is not one thitd of countries but the number of people, it's always the people that suffer. These sanctioned countries contain three quarters of the people of the world. Those that aren't sanctioned often have US supported dictator governments, so the people, apart from a tiny elite, suffer again.

hey guys! sanctions work, we toppled Sheik Hasina from Bangladesh because her key men were sanctioned. Her previous army chef was sanctioned, and the police head was also sanctioned. She had to remove them from their posts. With them in her arsenal we would never be able to topple her. The army chef refused to support her ''at all cost''. Now the dictator is gone. Sanctions rock!

Sanctions were never meant to 'work'. Most countries are no more democratic than the US and when the US brings in sanctions, it licenses those governments to crack down on dissent. Which makes them less democratic, and entitles the US to apply more sanctions. Iran's people were liberalizing heavily, but the main fear of the US has always been nationalism, its happier with theocracies than nationalistic democracies.

Venezuela has been a target for foreign countries interference like Cuba,Latin American countries,USA and foreign governments for its resources that is in that land. and yes, the Venezuelan government is a part of that also being a sellout for foreign nations and mismanaging the economy, healthcare system and cost of living in the country. And also those foreign sanctions in those countries don’t affect the governments affect the peoples of those countries, but also those governments in those countries are dictatorships and they don’t help the people only care about themselves. It’s the same thing with the US and the rest of the world, they only benefit themselves the politicians not for the peoples of the world there’s a lot of mismanagement corruption, poverty, corporations, and elites. In the United States, both indigenous people, blacks, Hispanics, Asians,Roma,Jews and white Americans are very ignorant and selfish people. And Also people from countries around the world including African countries They have no idea that those people living under those dictatorships all over the world.
