I remember this game. I was watching this game at there. The carpet surface of Toray PPO was high-speed, and all the players played aggressive tennis, which was fun. And Ai Sugiyama. She was a great player with a lot of energy, even though she was small in stature. She never gives up and run.

We need the carpet surface back in tennis.

Out of curiosity, what was the actual material of this surface?

Ai was a great player. Didn't have the weapons but could absorb pace well & defend. If you had a bad day, she would be hell to play against.

I wouldn't say that she didn't have any weapon. Her backhand down the line was a brilliant shot. It wasn't fast but always very suprised. No to mention her wonderful volleys. That's why she climbed the summit and was doubles No1.

She was so fun to watch. If she had not suffered that crazy attack, she would have continued to be a champion. 😢 Amazing young woman.

Monica is still my favorite female player of all time! In her prime, she was a very fierce competitor.

The handshake at the net was colder than normal for these 2... interesting.

I notice that Monica Seles played with both hands on the racket. Interesting. You don't see any women in tennis today play with that style. Maybe they should?.

No one before or after has had the talent of Monica Seles, so no they shouldn’t. Watch her pre-stabbing matches. Her wrists enabled her to hit shots no one, man or woman, can reproduce.

Some brutal hitting by Monica , but she was still suffering with the ankle injury sustained at the Aussie Open few weeks before you can see her looking down and wincing after a couple of points and I do wonder playing on with that injury caused her foot injury to flare up a few weeks later as maybe putting more pressure on it ,,, the beginning of the end really but she had a great career even after the stabbing so nothing to be ashamed about.

She made 70+ unforced errors, but she did not want to risk that much. She was always the star of the tournament. And I could not be happier that I could live in the period of the Golden Age and see Monica, Steffi, Martina H., Gaby, and more.

@@justtennischannel2the golden age definitely, I’m The same age as Monica and she was the reason I started playing tennis and watching it , she was just so different from everyone else .The woman’s tournaments from 90s produced so many classic matches and many different styles , I looked forward to every tournament now I barely watch ladies tennis as I find it boring I only watch the men’s tournaments

Great tennis. That was such a good court for the women to play on.

Thank you. One of last matches of Monica. Really too bad she waited until she retired to deal with her bulimia problems.

Could Monica and Ai hear the other match going on? It would be quite distracting, no? I'm sure the grunts were distracting to the other match players! I still weep when I think about what happened to Seles. :-(

Luck wasn’t on Monica’s side. But she showed the human values and the resilience that many of us have to tap into as we fight our way through loss and pain. She’s a role model for many people, myself included.

Yes they used to play with two courts side by side in the early rounds here, actually a few tournaments used to do that , the Brighton tournament and Stanford bank of the west classic both used courts side by side , I’m sure there are some more that I’m not aware of .
