Yet another incredible display of Monica tennis. Nobody can hit a passing shot like she was able to. Her athleticism, speed, and quick reactions on display here were so diminished in her second careeer.

After the US Open, Monica had another shock loss - to Frazier in Tokyo. She then took a month off. This was her first tournament back. It was Martina's last tournament of 1990 - she immediately went in for knee surgery afterwards.

There is no doubt that Monica was the number one player in the world for 1990 ..the reason she wasn’t ranked 1 was because she skipped the Australian ..even a moderate result there would have pushed her over the edge..just amazing composure for a26-17 year old

Interesting that Monica and Martina seemed to play a lot of the same WTA tour events, whereas Steffi and Gabi often seemed to play different ones. Wonder if it was just random luck, or deliberate. Seemed relatively rare for example to see Steffi and Monica in the same WTA tour tournament back then outside the biggest ones.

It is interesting how much Seles struggled against Navratilova in the next 3 years even though Martina then was 34-37 years old and far away from her peak form of 1982-89. Monica was 7-4 win/loss with only 17-13 in sets in 1991-93 against Martina. Admittedly most matches were played on fast courts since Martina mostly avoided slow surfaces (clay, slow HC) from 1987 on. And Monica was best on those slow surfaces (won 7 of her 9 slams there).

Monica had an up and down second half of 1990. She had the shock loss to zina garrison at Wimbledon, won in LA but then the huge shock against Linda Ferrando at the US Open. Later in September, she had another shock loss to Amy Frazier in Tokyo. She then took a month off and this was her first tournament back. It was Martina's last tournament of 1990. She immediately went in for knee surgery

Losing to Garrison at Wimbledon wasn't a shock or atleast shouldn't have been. Seles was only ranked 3rd in the world and grass is BY FAR her worst surface. Zina was ranked 5th and it was her best surface. If you consider that result a shock what would you consider Zina beating Graf in the semis which was about 100000000 times more surprising than Zina beating Seles on grass.
@zeddeka
Жыл бұрын
@@rolandgreen7484Monica was on a 36 match winning streak. She was seeded 3 and Garrison was seeded 5. Remember also that Monica was match point up against Zina in that match. We know now that Monica's weakest surface was grass, but that's looking at it with hindsight. A lot of people were expecting Monica to win Wimbledon that year. She was the real form player. Yes, Garrison beating Graf was a huge shock, but we're not talking about her, are we?

@@zeddeka Even if Seles won that match she would have lost easily to Graf in the semis. And Evert on NBC laughed off the idea of Seles winning Wimbledon before the event (and she had picked her to win the French) so I wouldn't say a lot expected her to win Wimbledon that year.

yea monica seles was the in form player goin into wimbledon 1990. but even then, she wasn’t favored to win on grass. wimbledon was always about martina chasing her 9th title and of course the golden girl steffi graf who was in a slump, sinus ridden (she flew home before semifinal i believe to deal with her sinus) and the shock of peter graf’s affair rumor
@zeddeka

@@rolandgreen7484remember, Steffi was really quite ill - after she lost the semi final she immediately flew back to Germany and had emergency surgery on her sinuses, forcing an absence from the tour for around a month afterwards. If Monica was ever going to beat Steffi on grass, that would have been her best chance. Steffi said in an interview later in 1990 that she wasn't sure she could physically see out the match.

@@markuse3472 it looked as if it was a bad bounce and Martina misjudged it. She was looking at the court for a while afterwards, angry at the bad bounce. Indoor courts aren't supposed to have bad bounces, so maybe the court had been badly laid.

This video makes me sad. Monica was not allowed to be herself, holding back her natural grunts. I'm so glad that players can be their authentic these days. It's like asking someone with ADHD to sit down quietly and not move. JUST DUMB - it's the reason why she lost to Steffi at Wimbledon. I'm a huge Steffi fan but I will admit it would have been a Grand Slam for Monica if she was allowed to be herself. It takes energy for us to not be our natural selves. And why "got to be white" at Wimbledon??? Questionable traditions - we know how those are playing out these days in the MODERN world.

"it's the reason why she lost to Steffi at Wimbledon." The surest sign of a Seles fanatic always is they are the only ones delusional enough to think Seles wouldn't have lost to Graf in a Wimbledon final had she just grunted, LOL! Of course it is not enough to blame every loss Seles had on the stabbing, every other loss has to have an excuse too. Didn't grunt, too fat, too fit, wasn't allowed to grunt, injured, her opponent wore blue.

I love Monica, but Martina would beat her in early 1993 at an indoor event in Paris. Martina would become the oldest former number one ranked-player (at 36) to beat the current number one player - age 19, at that Paris event. Very sadly, it would be the last time that these two greats would play a professional match together - Monica would be stabbed in Germany shorty after. Oh good God, it was awful, on so many levels.
