I had a brief encounter with Mickey Dolenz while living and working in Los Angeles. He was taking a friend or family member to an appt and needed to get change or something for the parking meter and came into the Chinese restaurant where I was eating next door. I was star struck. He was my favorite Monkee as a little kid growing up in the 70s. I babbled something stupid to him about him being my favorite Monkee. I'm sure he gets that all the time and is probably tired of it, but he just gave me a nice smile and said thank you. What a great guy.

The Monkees will forever be legends. These guys are brilliant & have always been down to earth. So glad that Mickey & Mike are still with us. Would love for these two to make a new album. They have yet to receive the recognition that they deserve from the industry. They did so much more than the Beatles in a shorter time. They could act, sing & were a top selling group. Not many in this world achieved what these men did.

I've followed the Monkees since I was 10 years old. I read a lot still today about them, I know Davy & Micky were extremely close for many years after the group went their separate ways. I have seen them 5 times in Concert over the years, but never Mike. We moved to Knoxville in May, 2019, still trying to get settled in. My Son and his family came over to celebrate my 63rd birthday, in July. We were sitting around and my son spoke up, "Dad Mike & Micky are in Knoxville today, at something called Fan boy! They were actually preforming while we were talking. I didn't show it, to my family, but I was devestated. So close, but so far away!!!

The Monkees eventually demonstrated a real musical talent that should be recognized by the Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame. It's a pity Davy and Peter will not be there when that moment comes. They were very good singers who could hold their own playing their instruments and some of their songs have become standards. Before they were chosen for the show Mickey was already a veteran TV performer and Davy had been nominated for a Tony award, for his stage work in the musical Oliver, you can see him acting and singing in the Ed Sullivan Show the same night The Beatles made their debut. Even The Beatles used studio musicians in their recordings, as did The Beach Boys, The Mamas And The Papas, The Four Seasons, etc, so holding that against The Monkees is vicious and makes no sense. Long live The Monkees !!! Blessings from San Juan PR !!!

And this session had a lot of good questions AND answers and non-answers. I was fortunate to attend the HEAD 50th anniversary screening in Hollywood last November. This Q&A was superior to that one IMO. On a musical note, very excited to get a Videoranch email today announcing that an album release is coming soon, which was recorded in 1973 with Nez and the Countryside band including Red Rhodes, at McCabe's Guitar Shop. I saw Nez and Red play that summer, at Knott's Berry Farm, and this album should be prime stuff.

They're the old generation and they've got somethin' to say. It was tragic when "All of Your Toys" wasn't released as a single (or even on the album) because Bill Martin wasn't a Screen Gems writer, so they didn't have the rights to it. What a great song.

When Mike said something like ''We didn't have much say or opinion on what happened'' I think he was referring to the fact that 'A little bit me A little bit you' was released in an underhand way by Kirshner instead of TOYS which also he brings up the way the second album was released without their knowledge.

It would have taken the Monkees to a whole other level. The least Rhino could have done was release it as a single in '87 or whenever Missing Links came out. It would have been a top 10 then too. That really pissed me of that they didn't think of that.
@soylentteal

Oh, different record company. That was then... was on the Arista greatest hits package with two other songs recorded by Micky and Peter (Davy and Mike were... busy). A year or two later, Rhino leased from Arista (I think they still do) all of the old original 9 albums to put on CD and records for the first time since they were originally released 20ish years earlier, all remastered. With the modest success of those, Rhino leased ALL the master tapes from Arista and released what turned out to be a three album series over 8 or 9 years called Missing Links. The first one had All of Your Toys on it. I think with the right promotion, All of Your Toys could have been a huge follow up single to That was then... And over the last 10 or 15 years they've been doing these massive deluxe box sets of the complete sessions from each of the original albums. But in '87, Rhino instead produced the first Monkees of new material called Pool it! which I've always found to be a terrific album. MIcky, Peter and Davy fit perfectly in '80s pop music. They did release two singles with two cute videos which barely cracked the Hot 100. Again, there was no promotional push so no one except me knew about it. To this day, it's one of my 'go to" Monkees albums along with The Birds and the Bees.... And you're right. My ideas are really good but no on listens to them.
@soylentteal

@@Bigbadwhitecracker Yep, I should have remembered it was Arista, since I have a copy of that CD. I got all the original albums when Rhino re-released them (with all those great unreleased tracks), plus "Pool It" and the 3 "Missing Links" releases (LOVE Micky and sister Coco's "Midnight Train") but the only "complete sessions" one I got was my favorite, "Headquarters." The prices for most of them were ridiculous.

The only song or view of them with Mickey in front let alone Nez on bass. I know everybody messed around those days with instruments and acting but that set up it always made me curious. Thanks

I'll have to admit I've only watched the beginning of this video so I haven't heard the question yet. I did however, just read a quote from an interview of Peter that said that if the actors/musicians played the instruments or had the band roles that were better suited for their abilities/proficiency with instruments, it would have been Peter on lead guitar, Mike on bass, Davy on drums, Micky on lead vocals. I read elsewhere that that had to be changed up because the producers needed Davy as the front man. I'm not a Monkees expert so please correct me if I'm wrong. Also, Peter also plays the piano and banjo so there's that.

According to Peter that was the "correct" instruments they should have been assigned from the beginning with himself on guitar, Mike on bass (because Peter was the better guitar player), Davy on drums (because he loved playing them!)and Micky as the frontman. (because of his energy and charisma and also because he sang lead on most of the songs.) That time they played Words to my knowledge was the only time they ever played with that line up.

Mike had the financial support of his mom who invented liquid paper so he didn't need the touring revenue but I also suspect he always had less interest in ongoing entertaining like the 3 others. I thought some of Micky and Mike's answers were non answers but that's what they do and so be it.

I never thought Michael Nesmith would ever get rid of that stupid cap. Nessie looks much better with the beard and moustache than without.

Michael's nickname is Nez. "Nessie" is the nickname of the Loch Ness Monster! 😂 He would have got rid of the hat much earlier but it had quickly become his trademark and the producers wouldn't let him get rid of it! He wore it to his first audition simply because he rode a motorcycle and it kept his hair out of his eyes. While it did help him to stand out it also became almost a curse! Matter of fact in the series pilot episode his character was literally named Woolhat!

I remember leaving Kindergarten Music class in 1970 arguing with Joe Piccone about "who is better" the Monkees or the Beatles.Joe was convinced that the Monkees were better because they had a TV show.All these years later I still gloat over the fact that I recognized organic music was better than manufactured music.The Monkees were the Rap "music" of that era.

It doesn't matter. The Beatles liked The Monkees. Theirs was the only TV show given permission to play a piece of a song from one of The Beatles' albums. They played the beginning of "A Day in The Life" from Sgt Pepper at the start of the final episode. Michael Nesmith was in London and present when that song was recorded and can be seen briefly in the video released by The Beatles. Years later, Micky, Peter and Davy joined Ringo star for a Pizza Hut commercial. The rivalry between the two bands never existed and by extension there is no reason for it to exist among fans. We should all listen to what we enjoy. "Good" or "real" music is in the ear of the listener and not dictated or defined by anyone else. Besides, trying to do so be contrary to the message of unity and love that both of those bands always tried to promote. I enjoy hearing Linda Rondstadt sing "Different Drum". Knowing Michael Nesmith wrote it makes me happy, but her other songs make me smile too. Crossover enjoyment of music is allowed and encouraged. Opening the mind and trying something new may lead to the relief your spirit has been needing. Peace ✌

Mike found the "door" today. I hope he was born again...otherwise I won't see him in heaven. “Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3

Love Gerry Anderson. Right, he found the door. Mike seem very philosophical. I think he was honest to a fault even mentioning that he thought his Mother want a very google artist. How he stated that a antagonist relationship with Peter Tork.

@@mr.peevyshow1914 Uhhh....I don't think he was anything but spoiled. His mom was rich and he wanted to be recognized as a SERIOUS musician. He had talent but let's face it....not Rolling stones talent. Had he been honest with himself he'd have turned down the Monkees at the time or soon after he realized this move would not make him known (fame) as a SERIOUS musician. Tork was the same. And they both (more Mike) ridiculed their own characters and sabotaged what they could in the show for petty revenge for not being able to do more of their own music (which would have failed miserably). The group had a chance to do Sugar Sugar (The Archies) and Davy's voice would have been perfect for the tune but the "group" turned it down as too bubble gummy. Mike never could get over that he was never considered a serious musician and blamed the Monkees. That's why he refused to go on reunion tours....because of a simple grudge. Again, I do hope he is in heaven.....we all make our choices and Mike's are all made. The rest of us...there is little time left.
