Thank you so much for all wonderful comments from out of Japan! How nice to know we enjoyed watching the same TV program in different countries, culture and backgrounds. I’m happy we shared the same time😊 Many Japanese at this time watched and still love this drama including all actors and music.
For anyone outside of the UK you cannot underestimate how big and popular this TV series was back in the early 80s. I remember being in primary school and playing Monkey at break times with kids arguing over who was going to be who. Funnily, Tripitaka was always the favourite as she could control everyone with two fingers!!! I'll never lose this show, and now 40 odd years later I have the full boxset and still watch it.

This was big in the UK back in the very early 80's. Loved it as a kid
It was made by a Japanese because when it was made, it was already 100s of years old and was already one of Chinas 4 great classical novels and had already spread through out all of Asia. This Japanese version only got English dubbing and licensed in the West, instead of the Chinese version which most people consider to be just as good if not better and also came out in the 80s. Of course china was still very poor in the 70/80s and also not an Western ally and communist country. that has a lot to do with why chinese productions aren't as widespread in the Western culture and psyche. That, and the fact that China alone has more people than all of the west and Japan combined and make up 20% of humanity itself already so China doesn't need to spread to the west to be big or popular. Just china and east/south east Asia/india alone is 50% of the world already. West is only like 10-15%. Miniscule and irrelevant. they just had money back then but today we see that that was an aberration and cannot last. Today China has developed greatly in all aspects and is taking back its rightful place at the top of the world. Not just money k military or technology but also culturally. Japanese, Korean, Vietnamese written language etc all originally came from Chinese. Japan still uses Chinese characters till this day, and Korea too although they've replaced much of it with their own written system. That's what Kanji, Hanja etc are. Chinese characters..all their historical records are all in Chinese because that's what they all used back in the day for centuries/millenia. Chinese influence on east Asia cannot be understated. It is too influential, from language itself to religion to philosophy to technology to art and culture itself like journey to the west and the countless adaptions of it in endless amounts of series, movies, games, anime/manga etc including this one, or another well known Japanese manga based on Sun Wukong.. Dragonball. Son Goku is literally Sun Wukong in Japanese language.

@@oedipamaas2067 well they did, my dad says the Chinese one of the same time period was much better, it just wasn't translated and exported to the west because of politics. The Chinese ones are also more faithful to the original story e.g. In the Japanese Monkey his companions are the monk, a pig and a fish/water monster, but the water monster should be a bull monster. The OG Dragonball was also inspired by Journey to the West and from that you get Oolong (Pig) and the Ox-King Can we agree to say both bits of information are relevant - who made the adaptation in discussion, but also who wrote the original story it was based on?
Watched this on friday evenings when i was 10 back in 1980, had tea, then cub scouts, making campfire sausages, gluing fingers together making airfix planes, and singing ging gang gooley songs and getting up to no good with my mates.. Best childhood days..Brings back a flood of memories.Brilliant

I'm Japanese. Masako Natsume was so beautiful and charming and ability actress. All Japanese people liked her. But she's gone to Gandhara when she's 27 years old. All of us cried, 「Hey,God. Too young....。」

In the original studio recording, that scream was improvised by Steve Fox who played the bass. However, during the live performance, it was the drummer Tommy Snyder who took charge of becoming the "wild boy" of the band who boasted the biggest pair of lungs.

Oh, this is UK version of introduction?I miss Masako Natsume everytime I hear this tune. She passed away by a fatal desease(blood cancer) few years after this drama.
I love this show! I don't know about other countries but it was huge in Australia in the 80s. Just about every kid in our school watched it and we would act out the characters in the school yard. I don't think there was a single kid that didn't try to summon a pink cloud of their own. Good memories! The show is still great to this very day.
