Monkey Vault and Kong Vault Tutorial | IQ Parkour
The following is a tutorial of the monkey vault and the kong vault. The most difficult part of a successful monkey vault is the 3 bends. You must be able to scrunch yourself into a tiny ball.
It's important to get as small as possible
so that your toes don't snag the obstacle you're jumping
Notice that I'm able to make myself super tiny at the top before carrying my feet over the wall.
The width you want is a little bit wider than shoulder width.
If you go to wide you'll make the space for your feet to come through too short and you'll snag your toes.
If you go to thin you won't be able to fit. Just more than shoulder width should be the perfect distance.
Recognize that the action is all in the shoulders. Which means you need to be able to lift your entire body
and be able to hold yourself as you glide forward over the bench. I recommend doing this drill to get comfortable holding your whole body up.
Notice that my feet are above my head, that helps later when we transition from a monkey to a kong vault.
This next drill is to get you comfortable jumping on to your hands. Start off with a hand stand.
Then get comfortable diving into a handstand.
Diving is critical when we make the transition from monkey vault to kong vault.
You need to feel safe diving to your hands with your feet over your head.
Finally get comfortable doing that dive onto your wall or object you're vaulting.
Practice arching your back and getting your feet higher than your head.
You won’t do this arching with the monkey vault but you will with the kong vault.
Now notice here the difference between a monkey vault and a kong vault.
The monkey vault is a much slower move. In the monkey vault your hands touch the object before your feet leave the ground
In a kong vault your feet must leave first. So to make the transition to the kong vault you'll want to practice jumping onto your object.
Once you have all the pieces and can already do the monkey vault try jumping first and then touching your obstacle
and doing a kong vault.
Then practice jumping from farther and farther back.
You'll notice that the farther back you jump from the more you look like a mountain lion pouncing and less like a monkey.
This more committed jump looks a lot cooler and can be done a lot faster and is therefore more efficient
which is the primary goal in parkour.
Finally, you'll notice that the kong vault is actually easier to do than a monkey vault.
But, it helps to learn the monkey first so that jumping into a kong isn't scary or dangerous.
It's important to train your muscles to first be comfortable with the movement.
