I only played Neuroshima Hex on the app and when I saw Monolith Arena and the expansion on sale from Portal I figured there’d be a Zee review of it. Returning today to say thanks for the review.

I just played Neuroshima Hex for the first time today, and quite enjoyed it. I'm glad there's a fantasy version, I much prefer fantasy to sci-fi, This is a future get, thanks Zee!

Looks good, but think I prefer the Post-apocalyptic theme more. Plus why not include opaque draw bags, for each player, for the tiles instead of "shuffling" them and putting them face down in a stack. Seems arbitrary to me

Neuroshima Hex! mechanics work so well thematically when you think about it as a chaotic firefight. The game itself made me like post-apocalyptic theming far more. While I like the new fantasy theme, I don’t expect the mechanics will fit as well with fantasy as they did with post-apocalyptic theming. Either way, I’m it’s a must-have for me.

Do you think the armies are different enough from the ones we've seen in Neuroshima Hex so far? I'm perfectly fine with it being a mostly thematic reskin of the same system as long as we're getting unique armies in this universe as well

@Zee I love your reviews, I think your taste in gaming are close to mine and watching your reviews often ends up costing me money :) talking about this, I think the price should somehow be factored in your target thing.. Thanks for doing this!

Yikes. I know prices can fluctuate heavily and it's hard for reviewers to discuss price cause many of their games are free or expensed for work. Still I wish MSRP was listed with reviews on the dice tower. Seems an important thing for most people to me

Honestly wished they stayed with working on the NH line and could have introduced this fantasy line as some plot point. Something along the line as a portal was opened up by mad science gone wrong... Kinda disappointing.

Great review - especially since Garcia is a NS Hex fan of old, and very well aquainted with that game. Played MA a few times now, and a there are a few things I don’t agree with, though. -Thematic Tiles: In what way are the MA armies ”more distinct” than the ones in NS Hex? That each army’s mechanics would be better integrated with its theme? I simply don’t agree. -Aesthetics: Here’s where we really differ. The board is crazy small - probably to be able get it in the box without having to fold it. The ”player aids” I guess is the army reference cards (?). Aesthetically, they follow the design of the armies, of course. But in NS Hex they’re printed on thick, sturdy cardboard, and in MA they’re very thin. For gaming purposes, not important - but the difference is there. NS Hex’s army cards are clearer, with all the tiles explained on 1 side, so they’re better that way too. But I do think NS Hex should’ve used the flip side in a better way. The MA ref cards has more info on them, with deeper explanations. And the tile art is absolutely not better in MA. I’d say the 4 armies in the base game are just as good in NS Hex 3.0. But some of the NS Hex expansion armies have truly spectacular art, once you take a closer look at them, especially DDM, Smart, Mississippi and Death Breath. And I definitely don’t like the ’cute’ quasi-medieval look of the MA bosters and action tiles. Looks like they belong in a kids game. I fear this is very deliberate, to change the ’tone’ of the game into something more ’Family Friendly’. What is WAY better in MA, though, is that tiles are almost twice as big as NS Hex’s. I’ve never understood the importance of making NS Hex so small. So, ”from a production point-of-view” - weighing pros against cons - I think NS Hex 3.0 beats MA.

Can you mix the armies against each other from 2 versions?

This could be great if they end up "Heroscaping" this and don't tie themselves to the fantasy theme. Anthropomorphic animals, monks, historical armies, sci-fi, super heroes, ant colonies, kaiju, poisonous berry bushes, aliens, whatever all fighting together, make the monoliths work like Stargates or the like thematically, whatever, it could be great.

Question about tactics/strategy. You say it is on par maybe deeper than neuroshima hex, but I never played that game. Can you go into the strategy/tactics aspect a bit more for the people who never played neuroshima.

Err, what are the multiplayer game differences? I checked Monolith Arena rulebook and only thing that is different seems to be the amount of health in certain 3 and 4 player modes. Isn't Neuroshima Hex multiplayer essentially the same? I actually think Monolith Arena multiplayer is worse due to not having larger map :/

What I want to know is what type of powers the units have? The 4 clans are asymmetrical right?
@Bierzgal

I was thinking exactly the same. The board does not have the additional ring of spaces. The multiplayer rules are pretty much the same. Also, when playing with monoliths the board would be even more cramped than in NHex. I don't see how this would be good for 3+. Everything says it's worse than NHex in this aspect. And that one is not really known for being good with more than 2.
@markusschmidt9260

The additional ring was actually supposed for the (crazy idea of a) five or six player game, never for three or four. But I agree, these multiplayer modes have already been in the original. There were just also added other variants which were rather bad kingmaking "deathmatch" modes.
@KristoVaher

@@markusschmidt9260 actually expanded ring is used for 3-4 as well, at least in Neuroshima Hex 3.0 rulebook. It's optional, but it is there. It's required for 5-6.

Yes, I have the 3.0 version myself. They recommend, using the spaces only for 5 or 6 players, but say, you can use them for 3 or 4 as well, if everybody agrees on that.

Honestly, this game dropped so much for me. NH is my top 3, and this is the same but with the overused fantasy setting. I really love the post-apocalyptic setting. I think I´ll wait for it to be cheap and buy it to use the monolits in NH.

I'd hardly say fantasy's overdone when compared to "post-apocalyptic". They're both frightfully dull and overdone, but I guess it also comes down to personal preference. I generally prefer sci-fi, but I'm so bored of "post-apoc" flavoured stuff.

Any player cards with that much fine print on them is a dud. With games, in the text department, "less is more." At least they didn't do the same on the board and tiles.

This looks super gimmicky. I don’t know why I’d get this when I already have neuroshima and all of its factions. All they did was basically reskin the game and add the “monoliths” so people think it’s different.
@StefanoDiSilvio

I kinda agree but you are maybe underestimating one thing: the new theme made the game more appealing for more people. The only thing standing between my girlfriend and this game system was in fact the theme. Now, she will play this with me. That's why I'm glad they made it.

I know it's not the least bit thematic, but mechanically could you mix and match this with neuroshima? Seems like a waste, given how similar the games are. I suppose this new theme gives the product mass appeal, and they don't have to deal with possible licensing fees/complications (neuroshima being a ttrpg)
