Seems kinda redundant since Matt already does all the transcription and conceptual work necessary to explain every single note perfectly. It's much faster to just explain it if you already think at that level. This isn't Tomas Haake who doesn't have as much vocabulary or teaching experience. There is no one better to explain Matt than himself.

(and I honestly did think you were alternating right foot lead with left foot lead, it makes more sense now why you chose not to, lmfao) Very insightful to see how what I thought I figured out on my own by feel, was off by one here an there because of things like the grouping of 57 is actually 56 when broken down! @@Proghead88 You make a fair point and I respect that completely. Matt has worked very hard to get where he is and understands what he has created unlike anyone else. As a result he has explained the rhythmic breakdown well. However if he did collaborate with Yogev, and it would be entirely his choice if he wanted to do so, it would bring Yogev's more polished and comedic editing style and clearer visual representations of the different rhythms and rhythmic concepts. I imagine this would have the potential to bring a bigger audience to these rhythmic breakdowns which would benefit both Matt and Yogev. Both Yogev and Matt's organic audience would be drawn to the result, plus Yogev's video style (from a subjective position at least) is more appealing because it's production elements make it both more entertaining and more easily digestable. I have nothing against the way Matt is producing these videos and it is a privilege to hear directly from the master himself on a free platform such as KZitem. I don't deny any of that. I simply really enjoy Yogev's channel too and wish to support them both and am excited by the idea of a collaboration as Yogev has stated he would love to offer his services.

Yo Matt I think I figured out the math you forgot at 15:30. The previous bpm was 178.125. Although it was cut to 56, the rate or change remains related to 57 instead of 56. So, 178.125 / 57 = 3.125. The new section is in 56, so when we apply the same rate to it, 56 * 3.125 = 87.5

sick vid, great presentation, loved it. so happy y'all make such rhythmically fleshed-out music in this world. out of curiosity, because i worked out a bunch of math back when this song came out, did y'all intentionally average the "three-in-two" and "five-in-three" note values (89ms and 80ms respectively) to get to the new tempo around 1:49 (84ms tactus)? or did you get to that new tempo some other way?
@drummusician
2 жыл бұрын
It’s not about finding the average of note value but rather the measure as a whole. So figure out how much time it takes for the two bar phrase in 6 to elapse(every 12.5bpm) then multiply it by 57=712.5 At that point the 712.5 represents the tempo of every note, and we want a quarter note pulse for practicality sake, so divide that by 4 to get a quarter note pulse=178.125 There it is!
@EdenPorterMusic
2 жыл бұрын
@@drummusician hell yeah! ah, and gives us a slightly unique 84ms since it’d be 4.8s (12.5bpm) divided by 57 = 84.21ms. thanks for the answer!

2 жыл бұрын
@Matt Garstka - at 1:44 - which i lovingly label "the drop" - i'm still tracking this with the quarter note pulse in 12/8 from the original tempo of 112.5, and it lines up pretty well. perhaps the phrase is a few ms slower, but in my mind, that was because it was the drop - perfectly acceptable to rock unreasonably hard there. then of course, we're back to the more precise 112.5 at 2:17. do you play to a click when executing this live that actually drops the tempo slightly at 1:44? what about the note subdivision?

13:45 I'm a bit confused here, can someone help me out? Matt is referring to both the 3's and the 5's when talking about "the rate of these", but aren't they subtly different? The 3's are a third of a nonuplet, which is a pattern that has 9 notes in the space of 2 quarter notes, and the 5's are regular quintuplets which are sometimes displaced by a triplet partial, but the 5 itself still fits twice into the span of 2 quarter notes, so that gives us a relation of 9:10, right? So very close in rhythmic value, but not identical? Or should you approach this as a sort of blend where the 3's are a bit faster than they should be and the 5's are a bit slower than they should be, merging into a singular rate?
